This set still doesn't have a returning mechanic. I made a thread about it earlier, but it was kind of a non-starter.

The only two returning mechanics that have held any resonance with the community as far as I can tell are split cards and DFCs, to emphasize the dual-sided nature of the plane. So I thought I'd just make a little poll to settle the matter.

If No gets 50% or more of the votes (winning ties), then we won't have a returning mechanic.

If Option 1 and 2 together get at least half of the votes, then we'll decide on what the returning mechanic should be in a later thread. If Option 1 > Option 2, then we'll have a vote between split cards and DFCs; if Option 2 > Option 1, then we'll have a follow-up vote between Cycling and Other.

DFCs seem like the opposite of what we want if we're trying to show that each half of the plane is unchanging. What do the different sides even represent for a creature that lives, say, in Illpyre? And the squished art, terse names, and missing italics on split cards don't help us get our point across better than actual cards with flavor would.

I voted for no returning mechanic (we have enough already) but if we're doing one it should be something functional like basic land typecycling.

I vote split cards. They may have short names and shorter flavour text, but the contrast between two sides can pack a lot of flavour.

I'm with Shazzeh.

It's not, as some people insist on reading all of my posts, that I think every card needs to have MAXIMUM FLAVOR, but split cards really are dead space in the context of a set that already is struggling to articulate the link between flavor and mechanics (though Knife's design package voting idea might be able to fix that problem somewhat). And binaries simply aren't as much of a thing here as many folks think they are. Yeah, it seems intuitively like they should be, but the mechanics of the set, for better or worse, revolve around five different card types, not two different divisions of card types. Pushing binaries now will just confuse the already confused design of the setting.

Hmm, how do people feel about 3 way split cards? Ready // Set // Go? Up // Down // In Between? Good // Bad // Ugly (wha wha wha)?
