Can we finalize the name of the plane once and for all? Is it possible for Parad to start a name nomination thread, then create a poll?

This is the thread for nominating the name of our plane.

Starstill will remain the name of the set (unless the name we come up with is so mindbendingly awesome that people want to change it). This is just for flavor purposes.

chinkeeyong has deputy powers in this thread, since they seem to care about this more than anyone else. See their excellent post brainstorming about possible names here.

(We never decided on a set code, by the way. Does STS work for people?)

In a week or less, we'll take all the names that have been nominated and post them in a poll.

Velnaria

Lunanoir doesn't make much sense because there isn't a moon? We should probably just avoid astronomical roots in general because before the Starstill it was just a normal plane or something.

Velnaria is a perfectly fine name. Let's go with that.

I dunno, wasn't there a moon before the Starstill thing happened?

Seeing as details of Startsill are still a bit in development... yah. No clue.

Let's avoid astronomy. We can use literally any random word we make up. Just go for Velnaria.

I want to name the plane mainly so I can make a Soul of it for NGA Masters. STS works fine as a set code.

Here are my favorite name suggetions I posted in the flavor thread:
Antiva
Irovion

Antiva and Velnaria both seem fine.

I'm leaning towards something Arabic-derivative. Unfortunately Google translating into Arabic always returns nonRoman characters so it's hard to get a grasp on what an Arbicesque name should look like. Solution: mash a bunch of words together run them through translate and listen to the pronounciation repeatedly until I start picking out sounds I like.
Any of these good?:
Dimasaaj
Ar-Sethal
Semanay

Do we have any flavor rooted in an earth culture yet? I always felt it could have an iclandic feel on one side and a hawaiin or some other islandy volcano feel on the other. I'm probably too late for this though but you could pull names from that.

Based on an offhand comment from TPzombieW, I've been assuming a vaguely Persian flavor for the entire setting.

Yeah, I was thinking Persian. I've come around to thinking we should have a single unifying cultural root across both halves of the plane. Finding an earth culture with heavy hot and cold aspects is tough though. I figured Persia, or the whole Caucusus region in general might work. That or the Andes could work well too. We haven't seen much South American influence in MTG.

Pariapichiu jumps out at me as a fitting name. But obviously we can't go with that exactly because it's a real world setting.

Ozciadu?

Well that's already as much feedback as the Persian idea ever got. Inca might just be the way to go.
We should probably settle the cultural basis before the name.
