I question the use of the word "kimono" considering the heavy Western influence Jakkard has, and because I have my reservations on such culture-specific words such as that. I mean, I know a kimono is a very specific type of robe, but that type of robe comes from a very specific culture and probably wouldn't have arisen so easily around the multiverse.

I didn't really get what was going on until Dyan nabbed Peeper's sunglasses, but I must say that it's rather brilliant that you decided to write this story. I never expected to get this part of Jackie's history. In particular, I think reading this after getting Stare Down The Basilisk really sheds some light on her character and explains future possibilities. I think Jackie's story, then, reads better in that order rather than a chronological one. I mean, for one thing, I had a hard time not immediately thinking "Trotter" whenever he was referred to as "the white fox".

That's certainly fair. I actually had something of a similar reservation when I was writing this, because, like you said, that word comes with a very specific connotation. I wound up going ahead with it for a couple of reasons. First, the "mysterious oriental" is enough of a Western trope that I could imagine one of the girls at Roxy's having an Asian-style costume, so I thought there was at least some small rationale for transporting it over to Jakkard as a Western trope. Second, in my mind, the word "kimono" conjures up the idea of an outfit which takes some skill to get into and out of properly, which played nicely with the mental image I had of Jackie struggling to figure out how to dress herself in it, and then feeling very out-of-place once she was wearing it. For whatever reason, I didn't want to just cram her into a girdled corset or a hoop skirt or one of those slightly more stereotypical Wild West outfits, because they just felt a little bit too on-the-nose to me. (I certainly had hoop skirts on the brain, but always as a laugh line. I just couldn't picture her in one.)

Now, with all that said, it's possible that this specific word just carries too much real-world baggage with it, and it could easily enough be replaced with "robe" without losing too much of the effect. So let me know if you have strong feelings one way or the other. (The same invitation goes out to everyone else as well.) If the word is pulling people out of the story, I'd rather just change it.

I totally know what you mean. I actually think you get a better sense of her by starting with the stories where we see present-day Jackie, who is older, more cautious, more controlled, but whom we know obliquely has led an interesting life, particularly as relates to her on-again, off-again relationship with Trotter. Then, when we double back to see younger Jackie, and we get a glimpse of her more carefree, more reckless, more impulsive days, it does lend an interesting kind of perspective to the things we already knew about her. She's different, but I think (or, I guess I should say, I hope) you can still pick out some of the character threads which help to explain how she turned out to be the person she turned out to be. Specifically, I think it helps to show why she wants so badly to roll the dice in "Stare Down the Basilisk," even though it goes against her own rules for being a smart bandit. Sure, she wants to get rich. And, sure, she wants to make history. But she also has this kind of impulsive side which she has learned to control over the years, but which probably still exists in the back of her head as a little voice, saying: "What are you afraid of? Just take it!" And I think it also gives a sense for why she and Trotter seem to belong with each other even as they can't quite seem to get their lives to fit neatly together.

Another Jackie story? Another OL work that deserves to be in the archives almost entirely on it's own merit, much-wanted history of a beloved character notwithstanding????

Fox and Rattler costumes have a very slight, vague Asian influence. While those aren't up yet, they've always been kind of a part of how I've conceived of the world's visual design. (And I know for a fact that someone else is working on a story that similarly relies on other cultural influences, so this matches that.)

I just have a problem hearing words such as "kimono" or "gyro" (the sandwich) or other such culture-specific words in high-fantasy stories, but I won't hold it against anyone who thinks it best serves their purposes.
