I'm a simple reader. I see warm fuzzy Beryl and Aloise story, I upvote.

I could not agree more if I tried :D

I liked the "summer smell" moment: I feel like Beryl just notices the significant scent in the air, while Aloise notices every single little detail. This reminds me of Friends and Killers: Aloise needed Beryl to know everyone has a multitude of facets and there are depths one can't know just by an individual's actions. "A person isn't just the sum of their actions", if I remember well. I like how Aloise can be optimist and analytical at the same time.
Maybe I'm just thinking too much about things, though.

(as an insecure person, I can somewhat understand Beryl's reaction to compliments; sometimes they feel like warmth for a deep cold you didn't know you felt... which is a peculiar similitude, given the context of the piece)

Thank you for sharing, OL, this story has been much appreciated!

Thank you both, CKY and Huey, for reading! That means a lot to me.

I like this outlook on life. :)

I don't think you're reading too much into it at all. I confess that I hadn't thought about this particular moment in that particular context, but I think that your observation makes total sense!

Aloise, to me, combines the outlook of a scientist with the soul of an aesthete. She absolutely has a kind of analytical mindset which she can and does bring to bear on all aspects of life, but she also has an appreciate for beauty, and kindness, and the ineffable magic of everything that's around her. And I love those two aspects of her character, and how they compliment each other more than they run cross-purposes.

For lack of a better analogy, Aloise strikes me as the sort of person who, if she saw a magic trick being performed, she would just have to figure out how it was done -- where the mirrors are, where the wires are. Because she always wants to know.

But, even after she knew the trick, she'd still enjoy the show, and it wouldn't feel any less magic to her. Knowing how it works wouldn't remove the joy for her. She'd still believe in the magic.

That's one of the things that makes me love Aloise as much as I do.
