Ahahaha it's too bad WotC falcon punched their own forums in the stomach because if searching through the boards wasn't about as much fun as extracting your own eyeballs with a melon baller I could totally show you the thread containing all the revisions that Beast Engine went through with Molcru. It's mostly just him posting stuff and Barinellos shouting "WRONG! Do it again!" at him, as I remember.

Hey, you forgot the motivation stick. The motivation stick was very important.

Quote:
And the first time I tried to write Dominian Nightmares Barinellos and Beast were both like "This is terrible, nothing makes sense, it reads more like a plot summary than a story, and everyone is just a flat archetype rather than a character. It's forced and awkward.

And then I didn't write another story for like six months!

And that was stupid because ultimately I DID rewrite Dominian Nightmares into a story that DIDN'T suck, and it got into the archives just fine!

Man I've mellowed out since then...

Yeah, you two were pretty brutal together. :P

I think what wigged me out the most was that Beast held it up as an example of why fanfiction was inherently inferior to real fiction. That was a pretty brutal thing to have someone say about your work.

Ouch.

Having not read the original, I'll withhold judgment, but yeah, ouch.

It was honestly a bit hypocritical to have it coming from his fingers, when all was said and done.

I mean it was really bad, honestly, but that was a bit harsh of a thing to say under any circumstances.

Beast actually joined the project under protest, because he felt fanfiction was inherently unworthy of true artistry. And then he created a character, protesting the whole time about how terrible fanfiction was. And then he wrote a bunch of fanfiction while expounding on the badness of fanfiction.

Beast was... kind of a weird dude, actually. >_<

I came into the project at a strange time, right after all of the older members had basically disappeared. As a consequence, I never had much interaction with a lot of these people, like Beast, Troll, Skibo and so forth. I know them almost solely by reputation.

I never had any appreciable interaction with Skibo, and Beast frankly scared me. I remember when you came in, I think I was fading back in (I have taken the occasional sabbatical) and you showed a lot of promise.

Of course, I still have a hard time considering myself part of any group of "older members" since people like Keeper, Barinellos, and Skibo had been part of the old boards for years (by my understanding, at least) by the time I joined -- and it was a flavorful voting game designed by Skibo (of which Keeper was a player) that convinced me to join in the first place. I mean, I may have been part of the foundation (at least around for the founding, though not part of the first Council) of the M:EM, but a lot of the founders were older than I was/am, so I consider myself somewhat separate.
