Post subject: | The Nameless Hero |
This is a story that I made as part of a contest back on ye olde forums. The basis of this contest was to, eventually, design a five colored planeswalker. A personal choice of mine as the host led us through the six stages, was to make each stage a different colored aspect of that character. As a note, the Green one is the artifact (based solely on its abilities, that was intentional). Also, the cards were not designed in the order shown, i placed them in that order to show the progression of the character from a vengeful assassin, to a time-meting planeswalker. While I take some time to format my other story on here, this one was copy and past minus a few tweaks. It has to do with MTG, but it's also a short story that I think many people on here can enjoy.
The Beginning:
. . . When he was young his town was beset by demons. They destroyed the entire place, tortured and mutilated the populace, and harvested on their souls. Very few survived. Of the survivors, this one held a passion for vengeance, and simply left the remains of his desecrated home. Other survivors simply thought he perished during the raid. It is not known exactly how, but eventually word got around of a popular demon hunter. This man was known for slaying many demons and devils and another maniacal tricksters with ease. His vengeance his driving force, his memories his weapon. This man was as ruthless as the demons that destroyed his village. This man was known as The Nameless Hunter.
The Nameless Hunter:
The Nameless Hunter -- Legendary Creature - Human Assassin (MR) Protection from Demons, and from Devils : The Nameless Hunter deals 4 damage divided as you choose among any number of target creatures blocking or blocked by it. "I don't need anything. I made a promise, I have my memories. That alone is enough" "Nothing alone will ever be enough, you will see... You will learn, or you will be unable to learn. I hope it is the first." 3 / 2
The Realization:
Those words, unfortunately did not change this man. They certainly shook him up, but he continued to hunt demons, to slay in the name of 'righteousness'. He continued to strike fear into the hearts of demonkind. One day, he was ambushed by a demon cult. Nothing he couldn't handle, but the repercussions were enormous. The cult, housed in the nearby city, had unnatural control over the city's happenings. Soon an entire uprising of cultists had the entire city in their grasp. They gave this hunter an ultimatum: Sacrifice himself, or the city would die. Unwilling to submit to either option he snuck into the city and began to slay the cultists one by one. When he reached the temple, he began to slaughter the cultists where they stood. When he reached Rath'nagar, the leader, he began to laugh. He revealed that each cultist had been paired with a noncultist and the noncultist was implanted with a demonic being, being contained by the cultist. This meant that if the cultist who had been containing it, stopped containing it (died) that beast would be allowed to grow. Disgusted at the extent of this cults influence, he killed Rath'nagar and began to kill each infected citizen of the city. Forunately, they had become forced into some kind of stasis as part of the feeding. Days passed and the city was finally purged of this evil, and the world safe from another demonic uprising. As he wandered away he was beset by a mysterious man. This man revealed himself to be Rath'nagar and also that he had lied about infesting the population, he had simply put them under a spell. Furious the Nameless Hunter killed Rath'nagar where he stood. His lasted words muttered: "How can you redeem your soul?" For weeks after, this hunter was in a state of shock. He had been tricked. Tricked by the very demons he was trying to slay. Tricked into murdering hundreds, maybe thousands of innocent people whom he swore to protect. From that point on, his existence was tortured, more tortured than it had been. After weeks of inactivity, he understood now what his old friend had meant. He would learn, or he would die from his mistakes. Fortunately, he learned and was able to fix his mistake. He didn't understand how, but he knew where he should start.
Accelerated Research:
Accelerated Research -- Enchantment (R) : Search your library for a card then shuffle your library and put that card on top of it. Draw a card at the beginning of the next turn's upkeep. His failing rage begat humility. And in humility he found determination. Through constant study, and observation, his powers grew. He began to understand more than the world. How it works, how it was put together, and more importantly how it lives.
The Transformation:
Demon hunting aside, for now, he began to read, and learn. He accumulated an enormous amount of knowledge about demons and their schemes. He realized, though, that that was not enough. He knew everything there was to know about demons, but what about protection, healing, and most importantly redemption? He began to delve further into his research and began to travel the world looking for answers to everything. Over time he discovered everything required to create a world, except for the power to do it. He dreamt daily of beholding this awesome power; the power of creation, the power of destruction. Ultimate power. He was fortunate enough to meet a planeswalker kind enough, and willing enough to help him in trade for his unrivaled knowledge on demon hunting. This planeswalker spent over a year training and fine-tuning this man to be better prepared to planeswalk. They traveled together the entire time, fearlessly throwing themselves into situations that could possibly ignite this mans spark. After a year, this man began to lose hope of ever becoming a planeswalker. He released his guide, giving her the knowledge she sought. She, in return, gave him a gift that he could never repay. She gave him the experience of planeswalking. In this transfer of experience the whole of the multiverse exploded in his mind. It was in this rush of knowledge, that this mans spark ignited. This man was left unconscious for several days, and when he had awakened his tutor had left him with a note: "I'll be back." With his newfound knowledge he decided to stay here for his companion. He had to sort out everything he had just learned, and everything he could learn; he did not wait idly. Eager for a chance to create his own world, he decided to create a monument first. A true test to his budding ability. In this moment he drew on all the power he could. He gathered together all his accumulated knowledge, all his past experiences, all the thoughts in the multiverse that he currently had and forced it all into a rock in front of him. The resulting explosion knocked him back. However, when the dust cleared, the result of his power was apparent.
The Thumb:
The Thumb -- Legendary Land - Mountain (MR) Shroud : You may cast target planeswalker you control. , : You can activate an ability of target planeswalker you control without paying its activation cost. (A loyalty ability with a negative loyalty cost can’t be activated this way unless the permanent has at least that many loyalty counters on it.)
The Nameless Defender:
From that point on, he housed all of his actions around his monument. Over time, he began to fine-tune his abilities and made his monument increasingly potent. He soon found that other planeswalkers began to feel its power, and often traveled to it to meditate. He befriended them all and they shared knowledge while meditating together. Learning from such a vast group, he desired to travel as well. Wary of leaving in case his friend returned he decided to start traversing his plane instead. He regained his confidence in demon hunting in a new way. He began to challenge demons to come to him, rather than him seeking them out. The demons were originally ignorant to his claim, but upon defeating several smaller hordes their interest was peaked. Having started demon hunting, to an extent, he decided that he needed to alter his technique. He decided that instead of him facing the demons directly, he would inspire armies of his own. This method was easier said than done, of course, but was still carried out with ease. When word circulated of a demon hunter, and an area free of demonic treachery people flooded to the area. When the demons realized he had an army, they began to ruthlessly attack his newfound village. True to his word however, this man defended this village at all costs. This village soon grew into a city, and eventually a metropolis. With such an expansion of his city, he decided he needed a tool for ease of access to his power. With this thought, he carefully crafted a staff for him to wield in the heat of battle, against the demons. Something that would help him keep the demons at bay.
Staff of the Protector:
Staff of the Protector -- Artifact (U) , : Choose one - Tap target creature; or regenerate taget creature. , : Choose one - prevent all combat damage that would be dealt this turn; or untap target creature and remove it from combat. I never saw it coming. I felt the pain... it was night before I was awake. I had no wound, I had no scar; and my eye was back where it belonged... It was that man on the clifftop, always watching every battle... who is he? -Diary excerpt from General Lichus-
Deliverance:
The demons kept racing towards The Thumb in an attempt to either ambush this man, or to simply swarm his precious city. Each attempt failed. The demons couldn't grasp where his power was coming from. What they were overlooking was that this man had had years of practice destroying their kind. They could hardly grasp the amount of foreknowledge this man had about demonkind, it was frighteningly demonic. Demons have foreknowledge of humans to make unfair pacts with, that are easily rivaled by their unknown foe. The demons after several months of scheming had found a way around this mans future sight.
The Watcher's Game:
The Watcher's Game -- Sorcery (U) The next time an opponent casts a spell during his or her turn, you may cast nonland cards as though they had flash until the end of turn. The lightning was just over head. And still he sat, simply pondering until... A demonic portal opened... A burning stone smote the portal, crushing it completely. The fires doused, the rain stopped, and the man had simply vanished. -Diary excerpts from General Lichus-
The Finale:
The demons vastly underestimated this sight. Their act of desperation was cut short, foreseen by the unknown protector. The demons, defeated, finally fell back to the hell from whence they came. The citizens of the Watcher's city began to rejoice, and pursued the demons as far as they dared. When they had returned to the city, they found that their eternal watchman was missing. This nameless hero was hunting the demons, making sure they couldn't rest. He made short work of the weakened demons, coming finally to Nuuriskein, the Demonlord. This planeswalker was too smart for Nuuriskein, and before he could speak he simply said: "Natalie sends her regards." Nuuriskein defiant as ever retorted: "Rath'nagar sends his." Those were the last words spoken by a demon on the plane of Desqora.
Nobody knows what happened to the Nameless Defender after that moment. He never returned to Desqora for long. Many people looking to record his name in history have researched heavily into the demonic raids years ago, but all for naught. it was impossible to determine who this mans family was. No Natalie was ever killed during a recorded demon raid, and Natalie's across the plane denied ever meeting a mysterious demon hunter. Left in awe inspired curiosity, the citizens remain uncertain to the name of their hero. They only know that on occasion they can find him meditating for several hours on The Thumb, before he disappears again.
The Planeswalker:
Desqoran Transcendant -- Planeswalker - unknown (MR) [3]: Simultaneously, for each permanent, exile that permanent unless it's owner removes a loyalty counter from it (Note the counters and auras on each permanent); and return each card in exile to the battlefield under its owner's control (with the noted counters and auras on the appropriate permanents). [5]: Until end of turn, spells you cast cost less to cast. Until end of turn, spells you cast cost less to cast, this only reduces the amount of colored mana you pay. (A spell that costs costs instead, a spell that costs costs instead.) [7]: You gain an emblem with "Whenever a creature enters the battlefield, destroy it." and ": Exile this emblem. You skip your next turn. Any player may activate this ability." {11} |
