These are the two cards I figure are fighting over the same spot in the UR Tutelage deck because of they're similarity.

With Sphinx's Tutelage on the board, casting the 1st copy of Take Inventory mills for at least 2. The 2nd copy mills for 4, the 3rd mills for 6, and the 4th mills for at least 8.

Compelling Argument mills for 5 beginning with the 1st copy to the last. It's on par with casting the 2nd and 3rd copy of Take Inventory. Also, it can cycle for in a pinch which is cheaper than casting a sorcery speed Inventory the 1st time.

Thoughts?

These seem mostly suited for dedicated mill, an archetype that seems a bit shaky with all these aggro decks running around. I don't think I'd run them in a deck with mill as a backup wincon, instead favoring Telling Time to dig to relevant pieces.

Mono U mill control aiming to spike a creature-hate control meta sounds potentially viable. I'd probably opt for Take Inventory there - card advantage is more important than very slightly speeding up your clock. To be honest, I think that would hold true regardless of the type of mill deck you're using.

Whenever I play a tutelage deck it feels like all three copies of mine are in the bottom 30 cards of my library. I'd run Take Inventory first just because it would help me dig to my Tutelage's faster.

Plus: if you take in to account cards that cause you to throw your hand away. By the time you are 30 - 40 cards in to your deck, you might already have 1 - 3 copies in your graveyard.

I'll take Take Inventory over Reach through Mists, thank you very much.

If you have 0 Tutes out, Compelling Argument's mill for 5 won't be helpful ever.
If you have one or more Tutes out, cycling it gives you mill AND carddraw for an even cheaper price than firing off its main effect.

If I include cyclers for U in my Mill deck (not a bad idea in general), I'll include ones with actual effects (like Censor or Curator of Mysteries).

I don't understand this discussion. Take Inventory is clearly better than Compelling Argument, except in the situation where you have no Take Inventory in the graveyard and you're seeking to cycle Compelling Argument. But at that point, Compelling Argument's text doesn't even matter - you are only using it for the cycle. Curator of Mysteries is functionally equivalent to it. Even in a dedicated mil deck, you'd never cast Compelling Argument unless it won you the game next turn. Why even run it then?

Take inventory is way better cuz you find Tutelage faster and are drawing cards

Fin.

I would choose Take Inventory any day of the week. Though if you don't have space for all 4 TI in your mill deck, then Compelling Argument could have a slot. But really, what mill deck wouldn't run all 4 TI, yet run CA?

Though I guess you could run a Drake haven mill deck - where perhaps you felt the cycling worth it? I doubt it though.

Gemini wants to show us he found a commonly known garbage card is somehow comparable with a well known no brainer everyone must play card. I mean.. who doesn't play the cheapest draw spell in a mill deck?

I like Compelling Argument in more of a straight Mill deck; where that is your only win condition. Other than that; Take Inventory takes it.

Take Inventory 100% for me.
It's OKAY early, but it's super easy to discard the first copy or two to a reunion depending on your hand, it actually draws you cards.

compelling argument seems like it's only truely better turn 2 followed by a turn 3 tutelage, even then its not great.
if it were an instant it would be a much closer discussion i feel, cycling is cool and good(and probably the best text on the card) but it's not enough to make the card good.

Milling someone for five when you run into those timmys that run 88 card decks just isn't that good.

Compelling argument isn't compelling. Only benefit is being able to cycle at instant speed for :u:, but as mentioned already, Censor, Curator, and even the instant speed draw 2 offer the same but also offer better effects if not cycling.

The only time Compelling is worth casting is the extreme corner case of Opp Has 5 Cards Left in Library and Can Kill Me Next Turn. Let's say you draw and cast all 4, milling for 20. That's superficially cool, but that's all you're getting - better hope Opp isn't doing anything with their turns. The same 4 cast Inventories draw you 10 cards PLUS potentially mill for 20+++ (Tutelage out, double/triple tutes, hitting cards the same color). Baseline mill is equivalent with one tute out and not hitting double colors, but mills exponentially more if more than one tute out. And you have 10 drawn cards to answer threats and/or mill harder.

Like I'm going to waste my time debating two trash cards.
