Now that Amonkhet has been out for a couple weeks now and players have gotten accustomed to the new cards; how would you rank the 8 sets from the strongest to the weakest? In other words, if a new player were to just be getting into the game, which sets would you tell them go unlock first due to that set being really competetive out of the gate, then the next strongest set, then etc.
1. Kaladesh - This set has brung a new form of Aggro to Duels, wheter it's Vehicles or
energy which has set the bar for faster games and overall power level in Magic Duels. The Gearhulks has strong , midrange, powerhouse cards as well, expect the white one, and the Blue Hulk is a staple in control decks ever since it got spoiled.
2. Aether Revolt - This set is a great complement to Kaladesh; both Heart of Kiran and Aethersphere Harvester are great inclusions to Vehicles and Winding Constrictor/Walking Balllista brung along a decent counters.dec. Midrange received a new mana dork to help ramp out threats, and
Fatal Push is a strong removal spell agasint aggro. The expertises are also good tempo swings from time to time.
3. Amonkhet - Giving this set 3rd place might be a tad bit early, but I think it's precedented. Amonkhet has brung along great aggro cards such as Brawler, Glorybringer, and Samut. Cards such as Insult // Injury, and Fling are just game breaking out of nowhere; Control decks have received tremendous upgrades in cards like Pull, Censor, Scatter, and Kefnet. The gods are...okay, but each of them are good in their own archtype. Majority of the split cards are strong and game changing in of themselves. It'll be interesting to see how the meta shakes up after the ProTour. Zombies are a decent aggro deck aswell.
4. Shadows over Innistrad - Control probably got the biggest boost out of the other archtype in this set; cards like CS, Broken Concentration, Fevered Vision, Anguished Unmaking, etc. Human aggro is a decent deck with Always Watching, and cards like Tireless Tracker and Avacyn are really powerful cards on their own.
5. Oath of the Gatewatch - This set brung along strong creatures in it such as Kalitas, Reality Smasher, Elder Deep Fiend, and Thought Knot Seer. Grasp of Darkness is a decent removal spell of choice in todays meta, and Chandra is arguably a top 2 Planeswalker in the game. The set also brung along Izzet Prowess decks; with the right curve it could be a decent finisher.
6. Eldritch Moon - This set didn't bring too much to the table. It did bring a few new cards for each archtype such as Haunted Dead, Selfless Spirit, Collective Defiance, Take Inventory, and Bedlam Reveler. Liliana raised the power level a bit when she was spoiled and has the ability to take over a game quickly if left unattended.
7. Battle for Zendikar - When this set first came out it was really powerful, as of right now though it's kinda meh. Ramp isn't viable as it use to be, and Ulamog can easily be answered in multiple ways now. This set did bring a few cards such as Gideon, Ally of Zendikar, and Radiant Flames, that are still good in their own right.
8. Origins - The base set that the game was released with. You could still make Thopters and Elves with this set, but they both lose to board wipes horribly. The only thing I can take out of this set is Baby Jace, Baby Nissa, Disciple, and Woodland Bellower. Those cards are still strong on their own in the current meta. Sphinx's Tutelage and Gaea's Revenge can cause problems once in a blue moon though.
