I started playing in a time when preconstructed decks didn't exist, so I got a 4th edition starter deck with wrath of god, royal assassin and some other really bad rare that my memory of it has long since disappeared.

I don't remember what rares I pulled out of my first beta starter box. But I remember that I thought Bog Wraith was a cool card, though.

My first cards were also a 4th edition "starter deck". The rares in it were a Control Magic a Divine Transformation and a Deathlace. It also had a large amount of blue cards and only one Island and I tried to play with it anyways.

My first rare was a foil Weatherseed Treefolk. I've been around 14 by the time and some adult persuaded me into trading it for some crap rare :-(

Weatherseed + Rancor + Greater Good was one of my favorite janky combos growing up.

was it really 3 rares per starter back in the day? I remember only getting Nightmare and Stasis (what a crap card that ended up becoming good after I stopped playing).

Shortly after Nightmare, i pulled a Royal Assassin. Now THERE's a card that makes people sad. They finally drop their Djinn and they can't attack with it now.

I just loved Nightmare so much. Being my first rare made me immediately fall in love with Black and mono-colour decks. I played that forever.

I fell in love with black right away, also. I started using white somewhere along the line and found some combo that I don't remember that well - something with armageddon and another card I can't remember where I'd wipe all lands and they'd lose life for every land that went to graveyard. Weren't those like first or second edition cards? I was no expert but that deck was great against my friends back then and it was what I had to play with - just the strongest deck I could make out of the booster packs and our local comic shops hadn't started selling individuals yet.

I would LOVEE this for Sigil/Sram decks!

Back when me and my buddies didn't even know the rules. my friends mono black deck crushed us with Nightmare and Corrupt. It was so dirty.

It's funny you made this thread, then new set spoiler so far show reprints on Curiosity, Unstable Mutation, and an upgraded Roar of the Wurm. WotC does read our forum! I'm sure those were just the type of old cards you wanted to get!

Did that exact thing a few nights ago in a 2013 4ffa and took out two opponents!

From doing pseudo-limited out of old cards I just have lying around, I developed quite an affinity for Unstable Mutation and Roar of the Wurm. So could be worse, I guess.

Damn near did print that, lol.
