Guess I will throw my 2 cents into this( and hopefully not get it thrown back at me
), lol.
Now this is strictly from a Magic Duels perspective and not from lets say duels of the planeswalkers 20XX perspective. They are 2 different things. old duels was purchasable and could grind out and not have a limit on it. Duels is different.
Now I have been playing magic in general since Revised came out (1995ish or something). Loved it from the start even though I had no idea what I was doing. Only had 1 friend who was interested and we didn't know the rules at all or about building decks. We played with decks that had 300ish cards,, all 5 colors and what not. but we still had fun playing and learning.
I have never really been a fan of a free to play game. For a lot of reasons people have already said I here such as "pay to win". But I also don't not like them as well. Hard to explain, lol.
That being said, I think it can be a challenge for a new player to want to stick around and continue to play after they finish the story. Hell, I been playing for over 20 years as it is, and I actually deleted the game of my Xbox One after like 2 weeks cause I was pissed at it, lol.
I have since re-installed it and am actually having fun now. But I stopped for the same reason new players will and as it has been stated in here: losing all the time sucks. this wouldn't be so bad if you were not constantly matched with a rank 35+ all the time when you are a rank 1-5. But I actually think the latest update helped fix that, hell I can actually get matches better now, but that could just be because people came back to play it more for the new cards.(I like to think they fixed the matchmaking).
And what makes it hard for new players is that they face people who have all the cards open while they have the starter ones. The other turn off(was to me when I started it in November, but have since embraced it actually) is that there is a limit on the coins you can get a day, so it takes time to grind out the set(month roughly??) The alternative to 1v1 is the AI. But that can be lame as well.
That being said. like beast said, play some 2hg with some friends(but I don't think you get coins for that if you pick your teammate). I prefer 2hg to 1v1, but that is me. I don't mind throwing down in 1v1 though. Especially if its a tournament or something. I play to have fun, not be top player, and I don't care for what my rank is at any point.
But you can make decks just fine with starter cards as well. They may not be the best at all times, but they do just fine. But again, in the hands of a veteran player, this is easy enough as well. when starting and not knowing the rules and proper time to play cards, like instants and certain special effects on cards. always be reactive to situations, no pro active(this differs on deck types and what you play against, but still holds true most of the time).
And yes, most new ones don't do any research on the game and get frustrated. But, veteran players can help with that, just most don't including a lot of people I see on even the forums here. Be a mentor in a way. I can't speak for ios or steam versions of the game cause I don't play that way. But for xbox, message some one and say something positive or even give some tips. not everyone knows there is a site out there to help them like this. give them the website after a game. even that could get them hooked more(it did for me when I started playing and wanted to give up).
By doing this, complaints about "there isn't a big enough player base" can be fixed. there is always a solution to things if people want to help with it. but I also see both sides of the coin here.
but in general. most people don't want to take the time to do anything to help fix things for themselves. I got the resurgence to install it again because of people I met playing and the stuff we talked about. offering advice and stuff goes along way into getting people playing games like this and having more fun. I can have fun losing games all day long if the match was good and the player was cool.
The other issue I get too when playing is when your opponent has you beat and they are being a tool and just not attacking you. that's probably my biggest gripe with people when I play. just attack and be done, and let all move on. again, that's something that turns people off from the game, when people are jerks about stuff.
I have a bigger sense of accomplishment when it takes me time to get the coins and then I open the packs and am like "frack yeah! got one of the cards I wanted! (as opposed to having all the coins at start and buying them straight away.)"
I can also agree that older sets should be discounted in coins(I wouldn't go as far as saying free even for the origins set at this point). And lets face it, if wizards wasn't making money on any of this, the wouldn't keep making the game or expansions. the veterans are the ones more likely to pay real money compared to a new player. Vets want the card sleeves, and the better looking lands and shiny cards. not to mention they are more willing to buy the packs with real money to have it all right away. especially cause a lot of people care about the rankings, which honestly don't mean anything when facing new players and stuff.
I think I rambled on enough, lol.
