I'm spending 3 mana to cast it but I should be able to declare 1 color for it's effect.

if you tap a forest or a plains you're gonna get colored mana

you can't just decide to get colorless from a colored source

This will become even more relevant when OotG drops.

Barney and I are aiming for tomorrow night as well, circa 8 PM EST.

You had :w::w::r::r::g::g: so you had to tap at least two colors to cast it.

He knows, he just thinks he can declare less (but he can't). It's not spend X types of mana. It's how many types were spent.

If you want to declare Radiant Flames for 1 you need three red sources as the single red casting cost is mandatory. You had two of each color in your mana base at the time.

Radiant Flames deals X damage..., where X is the total number of colors ... spent to cast _______.

There is neither a 'you may' clause in there, nor an 'up to' clause.

Never knew that. Thank you for clarifying. That should come in handy next time.

What I should've done was tap for RRR and think about that ahead of time.

Most of the time, you would have had 3 R out (thanks to dual lands, which do have the 'you may' clause). Which is why most of the time you see 1, 2, or 3 as options.

Also it's a card for smart people so keep that in mind when you're building/optimizing your decks

Very interesting games. Looked like a InfamousGemini's deck simply worked very well against what Mackey's deck tries to do.

Quick question for Infamous: In game, one, how did you decide on T4 Moss over T4 Retreat to Emeria? I'd have thought the play would be Retreat, then T5 (if it survives) second retreat, land-drop, two tokens. At any rate, you'd have gotten an extra token off the Moss landfall by switching the order. But clearly you know your deck quite well, and I've never played it, so I'm guessing I'm missing something? Mackey's list seems kinda slow, so it doesn't strike me as a deck where keeping him a move down on mana is critically important or anything.

I almost always prioritize moss t4, there's a high possibility the opponent won't be able to recover from that...

I think it was a horrible matchup for Mackey, and it showed. Gemini has all the time in the world to do his thing and the better lategame.

Moss loses effectiveness every turn past 4. By casting it turn 4, he sent Mackey back a turn and himself up one, which could screw Mackey over a bit since he is a 3 color deck.

It is almost always the right play to Moss on turn 4, especially if you went 1st, unless you're facing lethal damage.

Retreat to Emeria into another Retreat into Acid-Moss is a very greedy line of play. Mwonvuli Acid-Moss isn't a powerful card because of it's casting cost and it's most powerful when played immediately. Looking at his decklist I knew mana is used for stealing effects which I don't care about, and mana was primary. mana is needed to cast double color spells like Ob Nixilis and Liliana so I went for that immediately. I also wanted to punish him for keeping a risky hand with few mana is possible.

Also, Retreat does nothing on turn 4. I'm just taxing myself for 4 mana with no board presense with the upside of getting 2 tokens next turn. Even say I played From Beyond instead of Retreat, I would still slam Acid-Moss 1st and From Beyond 2nd if I had both in hand.

And in this game it paid off, because he was holding mortuary mire, and was forced to play it.

Just to add you don't have to have RRR out in order to cast it for 1. You could have also had 2 colorless sources and 1 red source to get that effect, as colorless sources don't count as a color, probably pretty obvious, but anyway thought I'd share.

So if you had some scions or some of those lands that produce colorless, there are tons, you can get 1 as an option. May not be worth it if it dilutes mana base though.
