If it turns out as being in principal similar to MTGO economy wise it will not draw in massive new numbers IMHO. How many long term duels players gravitated towards MTGO, very few I imagine. At the end of the day paper is the bridge so if you do like full rules and no rarity a la standard you can satisfy that as a duels players with buying a reasonable standard deck or find a club that plays vintage.

There are a lot of decisions they could make but I doubt they will ever come up with a game that is 'as good' as duels is but has the appeal of HS in numbers to make it huge. In part its because the game has richer complexity than say HS so changing it (e.g. auto mana) will just lose a massive amount of its USP as a game system. Arguably its been copied to an extent but never bettered.

Yeah, Hearthstone is clearly a stupider game than Magic and if I ever believed they were actually equivalent, I would've switched to Hearthstone years ago.

As Hakeem would have us believe. His frustrations I feel were more about technical screw ups like getting a matchup and the hold priority fiasco. He can play and spend as much time as he wants on HS but not get close to what he used to enjoy I suspect.

I think the big question we need answered now we have an idea of the UI and know there is full rules engine is what is the economy going to be like?

My theory on the economy: Somewhere in between Duels and MTGO.

So like Duels some cards can be unlocked by playing and like MTGO some other cards will have to be bought with cash or purchased through participating in an event like a Draft. I bet it will allow you to own as many copies of each card as you want and it will not have rarity limits. I also think you will be able to trade cards and when you make a deck it will use up each card in it until you delete that deck.

I think it will be different from MTGO in that not every card from every set that comes out will be in it.

It will also be different from Duels in having some cards that are purchase only and not having rarity limits for deck building or a limit on how many copies of each card you can have in your collection.

I'm thinking it might not keep up with the Standard releases, it might be more like a collection of Magic's Greatest Hits.

This is only my theorizing though, and I haven't played on MTGO in like 12 years.

Why would it use up the card if you build a deck with it? That's not how anything else works digitally. It should still work the same with you being able to use the same card in as many decks you like.

Going off something in one of the Prof's recent videos, maybe they could incentivise paper and digital at the same time and have physical packs provide a code for the digital equivalent like they do with Pokemon?

That wouldn't help them boost their numbers from players of other digital card games though, quite the opposite.

But then where would the incentive be to ever buy digital cards? It couldn't work the other direction. The digital version would need to have their value cut way down.

It might but that's where alternative buys come in and still being capable of buying digital packs. PTCGO has beta systems, I think mostly in Canada, where you buy gems with real money and use those to buy tradeable packs like the code cards instead of using the tokens for non-tradeable packs.

Oh I just noticed wizards have made a mini article on it now: http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/ar ... 2017-02-17
Suppose it doesn't really expand on anything though.

Expand, no.

It does, however, describe what Magic Next is...a little. It basically says it isn't a product but a project name covering WotC's efforts to improve MTG experiences in the digital gaming world.

The more it goes, the more I am under the impression that once next is online, MTGO players will have their collections transferred and we duel players will have to restart collections from scratch.

I hope there will be at least some kind of small welcome package like " oh you played duels, nice, here , have X booster packs to get started in Next"

I get it that duels is free and that they are not obligated to give anything away to f2p players, but still, would be nice to do so if Duels gets effectively terminated by Next's arrival.

It is most certainly not free, but I still accept that what you say is probably true. I've spent plenty of money on Duels though, so I hope you're wrong and my collection mostly transfers, somehow, or somewhat.

That said, I may have no interest in the new game, it looks a bit too cute to me.

Yes, it doesn't help that, if you listen to the presentation, they use the term referring to both a specific new game (the one on the screenshot and where they also showed a video off with a "dragon hatching out of a card") and the summ of their initiatives interchangabily.

P.S., MTG is now listed as a participating company at E3 (June 13-15);

Seems we'll get our reveal there.

Imo it will be a HS copy in terms of grind. I don't think they're able to come with anything better so why not just copy the leader?

MtG though does not lend itself to the simplicity of a HS, but then would we want it to?! Without doing something radical similar to MTG Puzzle Quest where the story, lore and mechanics are based on mtg but implementation and design totally different. That would not gel with either MTGO or Duels fraternity I think. We want more of the same, but better, prettier maybe.

Another feature digitally and they prepared for it with the Origins Rebirth is keeping fresh digital content in line with paper release. Despite starting behind the curve as an example MtG Puzzle Quest is now bang up to date with AER release. That type of game needs new blood via paper release to keep the players interested, playing and of course paying.

That article made me pretty confident that the screenshot is from a new MTGO client.

The kinds of features that would draw me into a new product that sits in between Duels and MTGO would include more intense single player options such as longer campaign modes and a better developed AI. Something like Pokemon where you would have several rivals each with not only a particular kind of deck but also a particular playstyle. Also, a dedicated puzzle mode would be a big draw for me. I've mentioned it before but a feature involving the creation of Magic puzzles for others to solve (in the style of Mario Maker) would be the kind of thing that I would love.

Another thing that this new piece of software could use to get my attention would be a shared world for players to fight over. I always thought it would be neat to play Magic on the Planes of the Multiverse, fighting over territory and earning new cards along the way. Just as long as the world isn't vaguely defined like in all those terrible isometric city sims pretending to be strategy games on ios.

The thing the game needs most is crossplatform and an easy way to arrange games like arena or battle.net for other blizzard games. And a true ranking system.

ffs, that looks ugly. Why can't they keep the duels look with full steps? I imagine duels will end at the set after hour of devastation as mtg next is up and running by then as it seems to be the replacement for duels and a somewhat casualised version of mtgo?

Yes a good bet is that Magic Duels ends its journey with HOD. The card pool after 4 complete blocks and base origins should leave scope for its longevity when Magic Next arrives (and very much doubt Duels collection will transfer, no previous DOTP did). Just hope the game still gets support for online versus matches in future!

Possible this doesn't look like a duels because it has nothing to do with Stainless.
