Darthmask and I had a go at this before, but it all went to sleep.
Most of that data is mine (everything from
Midrange, about 80 games). From playing the games, the relevant distinctions feel like:
Red-Based Aggro: By far the most common strategy, although nobody can agree on what the right build is. Everybody agrees on
Smuggler's Copter, though.
Blue-Based Tempo: Flash threats and bounce/tap spells, featuring
Unsubstantiate as an all-star. This showed up a moderate amount.
Instant Speed Control: Nowhere near as common as either of the two above strategies, but still not unexpected. All the builds seemed very light on creatures and heavy on single-target removal spells.
Planeswalkers: Kind of midrange, kind of control - saw a few versions, but nothing spectacular. FYI, this is where I'd classify the
build I was running.
Black Midrange designed to beat Red Aggro: These came in two flavors. On one side, Black Green Delirium decks, almost all running 2x
Languish and 4x
Grapple with the Past. On the other, Black Red Madness decks, all running 4x
Fiery Temper. Not sure which is the better choice overall, but they seemed to be occupying the same meta spot.
and finally...
Artifact Combo... Sorta: Most of the remaining decks were trying to do something weird with artifacts - Reanimate, Gearseeker, Metalwork, or Marionette. At least against my deck, these all looked
horrible. None of them ever managed to interact or go off in any meaningful way. or at least, I assume that's what the guy who played 6 different 0/X artifact walls was up to. Maybe I give people too much credit?
This was back in November.
