Saw this one on Reddit and thought I'd make a point of raising it here too:
http://venturebeat.com/2017/01/28/super ... n-in-2017/

For those wanting the skinny, as you could probably guess Duels isn't even in the top 5.

1. Hearthstone with $394.6m
2. Shadowverse with $100.1m
3. WWE Supercard with $23.9m
4. Yugioh Duel Links with $23.9m
5. MTGO with $20.6m.

The fact that Yugioh, a game not even available in western markets for much more than a month, is ahead of MTGO speaks wonders TBH. This here should really demonstrate how massively behind WotC are, and how nigh-on impossible it is for them to compete with Hearthstone's numbers the longer they keep their heads in the sand. It's the same as any MOBA, MMO or other cash-cow driven game. The more money players have in one product, the less likely they are to switch to another one. Duels is still seen as the gateway product, I in no way expect to compete with Hearthstone and others. The only reason I suspect Pokemon is not up here is down to their booster redemption policy.

The link I posted is the article, here is the site you can request data on: https://www.superdataresearch.com/

You can look up games based on platform, genre, esports popularity etc.

It shouldn't shock you in the slightest. Marvel Contest of Champions is estimated to make $360,000 a day and has made an estimated $400 million since April 2014.

There is big money in any mobile game if you do it right.

Mentioning Duels in the context of this article is the definition of beating the dead horse. Frankly, I'm quite surprised that MTGO cracked the top 5.

These numbers are not surprising; with the way things are going I'd wouldn't be surprised if MTG:O were to drop in the next year(s).

The understatement is you are not going to get anywhere near the ballpark of the top tier unless you have a mobile offering. PC market will only get you so far.

Still interested to see what Magic the Gathering Puzzle Quest nets. It's certainly set up with the clan and PvP events and pay to win model that makes the money. For sure it will make way more than Duels but not anywhere near MTGO.

I actually think that there will be a huge boost if Duels is released on Android. Another huge issue is the no shared account between all devices. Why release a game for a bunch of platform and not being able to use your deck on all of them. I mean did they really believe they will make more money with this move...

Being able to play on the bus or in the loo will probably increase my playtime with 3-4 hours DAILY :D

It's mind boggling how it's taking this company so long to see the potential in a digital mtg TCG...

It's like someone with a bike not noticing how useful a car may be and saying "but with a bike you get fresh air and lots of exercise, that's way more important then convenience"

There's a **** anology for the day from me haha

But seriously, they posted this a couple weeks ago http://company.wizards.com/article/news/making-moves - how has it taken them THIS long to realise the potential? The ship has probably sailed by the time they get around to actually making a proper game, there's already so many big titles making headway...

and they're not particularily good at it yet, so they are entering the market when it's going bonkers but they have catching up to do on getting a good piece of software.

Probably in the best interest of Hasbro to buy out another small company which is doing the job better, then use that company's team to make a Magic / D&D product.

Actually, Chris Cocks has been on the CEO job for only 9 months. When Hasbro announced the hire, I thought Hasbro was sending a deliberate message given his tech marketing background. Think of it this way, who else could have fired Worth after all that time? So I give Cocks credit for the relative speed to assess the catastrophe and recruit new replacement talent. In those months he likely did more to re-kickstart the digital business than the old administration did in the past 9 years.

How much does Wizards earn on their paper product? If it's much higher than Hearthstone, their digital products would always be second in priority.

exactly. That's my biggest danger. If ever I'm at my daughter's swimming lesson and I've actually exhausted checking the websites I typically check... then I'm at serious risk at getting it. You're so, so right :(
