Outland Colossus vs Ridgescale Tusker

I have really liked Outland Colossus in the past but now that Ridgescale Tusker
is out, which is a better 5 drop?

PS: I think Verdurous Gearhulk still holds the crown but it is a mythic so I need something else for my 5 drop.

Colossus has seen better days TBH. Once he's renowned he enters the "must deal with" territory, but most creature based decks are happy to dump a roadblock in his way and swing in the air with Copters/Harvesters. Tusker on the other hand is a more interesting proposition, and it will largely depend on how your deck is built. One of the Green mages could fill you in better on Tusker brews, but the AI has made him annoying enough whenever it's played against whatever jank I'm testing at the time. Hard to beat a boardstate on X/4's or X/5's when you're only sweepers hit for 3 :(

Why play 5 drops in green when explosive vegetation exists?

Tusker will only be in counter/token based decks and Colossus is no longer relevant in the duels meta, too easy to chump and remove.

There are lot of good 5 drops, it is close between Skysov, Green Husk, and Avacyn. Angle of Invention can also be a PIA.

Not counting Chandra's Ignition which is still my fav :D

Preferred Pronoun Set: Xhir/xhim, depending on Moon phase

:)

And Ishkana, of course, in the right deck...plus probably Smashers and Nissa

Ey, let's play this...I'd go with the 4 CC drops: Kalitas, Gideon, TKS, Nahiri, TSpyN in the right deck...and second tier: Gisela, YExpertise, Tamiyo, maybe WWanderer? I surely must be forgetting something

If you're in :g:, Nissa Vital Force is vastly superior to either above options, and Skysovereign, Consul Flagship too. If in the market for Big Green Monsters, you're prob better off ramping into 6+ drops than packing several mediocre 5 drops.

As previously stated, Tusker is really only worth running in token/go-wide/+counters strategies, and Outland Colossus is a JFF card these days (I run it in a janktastic Jund Menace deck I haven't quite deleted yet, but I don't run it in more serious builds).

Unless I am mistaken, the question was asked about the 2 cards stated, not a bunch of other cards. So as far as that goes, Ridgescale Tusker gets my vote because it does more. Goes across all creatures you have, so does more damage in the long run. Outland Colossus gets chumped all day long by, well, everything.

It was like a yes or no question being asked. Don't need to say well, it needs to be done this way, and then do this. Just answer, lol.

To be fair, OP ends by saying they're looking for 5 drops to run. Comments critiquing the 2 listed and suggesting better 5 drop options are thus on topic.

ok, but, he/she also hasn't posted again yet from what i see. And as bad as it is at assuming, i assume that the deck in question is being designed around buffing up other creatures. I can't speak for other cards because i don't have them. original poster may not have all cards unlocked like most of you do. i don't and i still get weird crap about cards i use. don't really have much choice about it though.

while yes, cards other people say would/could be better, they may not have those or may not go with what they are trying to do with the deck, hence why they asked about those 2 cards in particular.

Fair point about cards being unlocked. Between just those two choices in a vacuum, Tusker is better because it offers a team buff with ETB trigger, so even if answered immediately you should have gotten some value from it.

But better options exist and specific builds make choices more/less desirable. If OP has other 5cc cards that have been mentioned in comments, or access to a good ramp package and stronger 6+cc options, then prob better to look at those instead.

Thanks for all the feedbacks. Just to give more context, I am needing 5 drops in a more Jund like build. I have already put in the 5 drop Nissa but I havn't tried the Flagship. I have two Cultivator's Caravan in the deck already as ramping/fixing which I like quite a bit. I am just hesitant to put too many vehicles in the deck but may be one more flagship will be ok. Jund like decks are very focus on board control with card advantage. I never had problem with Outland Colossus being chumped in the past. If they can't deal with it and I control the board, I can win eventually. Against more control-ish opponent, a 6 toughness creature can sometimes cause problem as well if their removal is damage based. This one creature can end the game incredibly quickly.

Anyway, I'll try a bunch of different options I think they have strengths and weaknesses against different opponents.

Tusker has more utility than Colossus. It makes your other card a bit stronger and its still 5/5. Both Tusker and Colossus can be taken out before they can ever attack. And should be.

If you're in Jund colours (red green black) then try Ob Nixilis, green Gearhulk, Ishkanah or Mirrorwing Dragon?

Colossus is underrated... the fact that only one creature can block it limits the risk of it being killed while attacking and you can always find a way to give it trample to avoid the chump...and once it is 12/12 there are even less ways to deal with it...

Because of the meta I usually go for the 4 or 6 drops. 5 is hard to swallow unless it's Avacyn or something like that. I can see a lot of cards working in niche decks though.

I think the problem with Colossus is that it just doesn't do anything abnormal and is removed way too easily or even stolen. A decent card for sure.

So far I can't really say I dig much of this expansion with my WBG deck. But whatever.
