Post subject: | Kinda Setting Related; Making Munchkins Matter |
So folk at my gameshop look at the focus on tieflings, genasi and dragonborn and poo-poo it off as munchkin ****. They kinda stand out in their respective settings, so its a fair critique. I'm putting this setting together with the intent of making these fourth edition focal points click a bit better than they may have in Forgotten Realms, which is my shop's favored setting for DnD. The Big Boom
Spoiler
The Big Boom was exactly that - an era where the elemental Primordials lived it up across the surface of the plane while Primeval Dragons fought, mated, and placed bets on the occasional fights that would spring up between Primordials. During their fights, the dragons shed their scales. These scales entered the Primordials, using them as hosts. And, virus like, the Devils hatched from their Primordial hosts. Seeing this, the Primevals began using the Devils as a source of entertainment. A few Primevals were appalled at their kin's cruelty and rose up against them. These rebellious dragons, a race called the Visang Primord, began an extermination of their race; they then reconstituted their dead kinfolk as subservient Dragon-Regents. The Devils enjoyed their bloodsports and went to war against the Visang Primord and their Dragon-Regents to defend their right to their bloodsports. In order to combat their enemies the Devils used the Primordials as a source for the mass-production of Demons. They sent the Demons against the Primords and Dragon-Regents while they continued their bloodsport against one-another. Neanderthals saw the Devils' prowess and took them on as patrons - they needed defense against the Dragon-Regents that believed them to be as cruel and petty as the Primevals. Primordials were largely indifferent to the neanderthals, which made them potential threats. While they hid behind the Devils the neaderthals saw the Primordials as a potential source of power. The Big Combination
Spoiler
The most cunning of the neanderthals - the warlocks - were given special tutelage by the Devils; from these rituals came the first Tiefling warlocks. Among the neanderthals, those that were not skilled enough to learn the ways of the warlocks, were entranced by the power promised by the Primordials. In the Primordials they saw an opportunity to bring Law into a world ruled by the chaos of dragons, demons, and elementals forever warring with one another. Neanderthals that embraced the Primordials, learning the arts of elementalism, became the plane's first Genasi monks. In a blitzkrieg the Genasi and their fellows challenged the Devils, Demons and Teifling warlocks. Rather than repeat the mistakes of the Primevals - and rather than making actions like those of the Visang Primord necessary for these new races - the Tieflings and Devils decided to seek out a realm where they could enjoy the excesses of the Primevals without the fallout that came from the Visang Primord. A few Genasi decided to assist the Devils and Tieflings in their quest to make a new home - and thus the Hells came into existence as a place for the Devils, Demons and Tieflings to live their lives to the fullest. Unfortunately the Tieflings were largely banished from the Hells for bringing in political intrigues and backbiting that kicked off the Blood Wars among the Devils and their Demons. From this event, the Infernal Exodus, the Genasi and Tieflings began integrating with their fellow humans. Tyrant's Fallout
Spoiler
While the Great Rave and Big Combination occurred, the first Dragonborn appeared. They came about long after the Dragon-Regents turned on the Visang Primord. Believing themselves to be reincarnations of the Primeval Dragons, the Dragonborn are dedicated to the study of battlemagic. They believe that, through work as mercenaries and even staging coups that leave them as warlords of micronations, they can restore the glory of their Primeval ancestors. The Dragonborn soon found themselves united in a war against the Yuan-Ti; the Yuan-Ti believed that their venom glands were what gave dragons their aggressive natures. So the Yuan-Ti removed theirs, and had been forcing this on their offspring for ages untold. A glorification of weakness and the Yuan-Ti' constantly taunting the nebulas that the Dragonborn hold sacred provoked their attack. Rather than fall into the same bloody trap of brutal warfare as their ancestors, the Dragonborn instead set about improving the lot of the human nations from which the Yuan-Ti drew the bulk of their armies. The have-nots, the dispossessed, society's rejects were taken in by the Dragonborn and instructed in the ways of their magic. This didn't go over well with the Genasi or the Tieflings. The Tieflings feared it would create a threat in the form of a militant theocracy in which the Dragonborn-taught humans would unite around a figurehead like Bahamut the Dragonborn that decided to start taking in the have-nots. The Genasi saw this as a potential powderkeg that would allow the Primordials to resurface and come back into prominence. Thus the Genasi and Tieflings found themselves united against Bahamut the Dragonborn and his legions of human followers. While this war ragged across the plane, a smaller race more closely resembling the dragons in appearance - the Kobolds- took advantage of the bloodshed. The Kobolds went underground to challenge the Primordials; for the strong emotions evoked by the war of the Tieflings, Genasi and Dragonborn had enlivened the Primordials. Being small in stature, the Kobolds were motivated by a belief that they possessed the same amount of destructive energy as an atom that had been split. In the end the Kobolds managed to kill off a few Primordials, strengthening their elementalist magic with the blood and souls of the defeated Primordials. The Tyrant's Fallout period rocketed toward its finale with the emergence of the Kobolds and their elemental armies as a major threat that the Dragonborn, Tiefling and Genasi had to deal with. A few Tieflings decided to try to earn their way back into Hell by turning on their allies and working with the Kobolds. At the end of Tyrant's Fallout the Genasi and Dragonborn made peace with the Kobold while the majority of the Tiefling, tired of bloodshed, decided to go out and enjoy the rich pleasures that the plane had to offer. These are the primary events defining the setting's history. My goal is to present a history in which the Genasi, Tieflings and Dragonborn feel organic to the setting. |

Dragonborn
Spoiler
The Dragonborn
The Dragonborn believe that they came about to serve the cause of Entropy. Their earliest records reveal a chaotic world in which Primordials forever warred with one another over petty differences, likely their peers’ criticism of their geographic creations, while Primevals seemingly mirrored them, albeit in the cosmic expanses above the fledgling world. Amid the chaos is a distinct lack of decay necessary to maintain the world’s stability – without the threat of Entropy, the dragonborn are left without their most essential source of sustenance: emotions. Physiology Dragonborn history teaches that they sprang from the scales of Primevals, shed, that took over elementals of fire, nature, and rot. These scales redirected their host’s magical machinery to the development of the fledgling dragonborn. At maturation the dragonborn emerge from their hosts, consuming the remains of the elementals. From these the dragonborn derive the nutrients needed to activate nodes throughout their bodies that contribute to their affinity for magic. Dragonborn are best described as empathetic vampires that gain sustenance from the emotions of other sentient beings in their vicinity. Dragonborn are comprised of three races based on their fire glands and nutritional needs: Rot, Blood, Vital. Purger Dragonborn possess a breath weapon that exerts a subtle influence, cutting through the psychic shields of their prey to exploit the prey’s fears and deep, unspoken desires. Igniter Dragonborn possess a breath weapon that ignites the harmless, if slightly hedonistic, passions of their prey: be it artistry magical, martial, painting or sculpting. Awakener Dragonborn possess a breath weapon that triggers genotypic and phenotypic changes in their prey; from the abundance of new life that these changes bring about in the prey the Vital Dragonborn derive their sustenance. Dragonborn reproduction is violent by human standards. During the height of the Blood Moon the Dragonborn migrate to a particular island inhabited almost exclusively by primordial elementals. Here they select a primordial elemental and engage it in mixed magical martial arts combat. There are two outcomes to the combat ritual: The Dragonborn may lose, in which case the primordial elemental leaves a fragment of itself in the dragonborn’s corpse. From this fragment hatches a new primordial elemental that gains sustenance from the Dragonborn corpse’s vitals. The Dragonborn may win, in which case they shed scales into the primordial elemental’s wounds. While all of the scales reach the fetal stage, only the most dominant will emerge from the host as a fully developed Dragonborn. As such, the Dragonborn have no concept of family. Personality The Dragonborn are the consummate hedonists that travel the world in pursuit of their pleasures. On their own the Dragonborn are impersonal and don’t tend to form relationships beyond that of predator to prey. As a chameleon may change colors to blend in with its background the Dragonborn may feign sympathy and empathy in order to remain close to their prey or to gain access to whatever has become the object of their desire. These desires can run the gamut from warlord to mercenary to political advisor to assassin to honorable champion to shaman or to druid. At the core of the Dragonborn philosophy of hedonism is a belief that the Dragonborn of the ages after the death of the Primevals by their offspring are reincarnations of those slain Primevals. In keeping with their belief that the world exists within a system of thermodynamics, they are the Primevals reincarnated for a new age. While they possess breath weapons, the Dragonborn primarily rely on physical prowess and their ability to create tools from the world’ metals. It isn’t uncommon to find a Dragonborn that specializes in the production of bullets, firearms, shriekblades, swords, or defensive weapons such as jittes. In the case of non-automatic weapons, the Dragonborn will imbue the metal with the essence of a slain elemental. This lends the weapon magical properties without requiring the Dragonborn to use magic directly. A few Dragonborn even imbue their bullets with elemental magic, effectively creating firearms that allow them to mimic the breath weapons of the Primevals. |
