MYSTICAL ARCHIVE
Whatever area of study you should choose, you will have access to our vast library of resources with spells and knowledge spanning all of magic! Some spells are certainly too dangerous and powerful even for careful mages, but at Strixhaven, we value knowledge above all else and thus have a library of historical spells to rival any other!

This collection, housed in what we call our Mystical Archive, contains a litany of spells from simple mind-spells to powerful and deadly spells most shudder to look toward. We house them in our Biblioplex and, lucky us! Professor Onyx happens to be sifting through several tomes right here with students Rowan and Will. Normally, only students get a look, but we'll make an exception for today.

Additionally, since we have a significant portion of foreign language students, the Mystical Archive is available in all languages, but we have something additional and special for our Japanese students! To learn more (and see more), visit here later today.

I'm sure you have many questions about the Mystical Archive and how you can access it. Please save your questions for the end of the tour. We'll hand out a pamphlet with more details on the Mystical Archive below.

MYSTICAL ARCHIVE DETAILS
Naturally, the wonders of our Biblioplex draw the most attention, and with good reason! We have a vast library of spells from throughout space and time, and we'll be granting access to 63 of these on your first trip to Strixhaven. These spells come from across time, so their inclusion in the Mystical Archive does not affect their format legality. That means no Demonic Tutor in your Standard tournaments, but if you open one in a draft, Tutor away.

The Mystical Archive is open to all, and you'll receive one copy—from its own dedicated slot—in each Draft Booster and each Set Booster, and at least three in each Collector Booster!

Later today, our Japanese team will be revealing something pretty cool. Stay tuned or watch this space for more details tomorrow!

I've been doing this wording change!

This is the earliest example I could find, in June 2020:

Each opponent may pay 4 life any number of times. Choose up to X, where X is five minus the number of times an opponent paid 4 life.
  • Search your library for a card, put it into your hand, then shuffle.
  • Return target creature or planeswalker card from a graveyard to the battlefield under your control.
  • Exile target creature or planeswalker.
  • Each opponent discards two cards.
  • Each opponent sacrifices two enchantments.

And the most recent:

Landfall — Whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control, you may sacrifice it. If you do, search your library for a Mountain card, put it onto the battlefield tapped, then shuffle.
Nahiri: Look at this destruction. How can Zendikar thrive under this?
Nissa: Look at this creation. How can Zendikar live without this?

Shuffle your what? SHUFFLE YOUR WHAT? Is it your hand? What do I shuffle?

*"To YMTC it up" means to design cards that have value mostly from a design perspective. i.e. you would put them in a case under glass in your living room and visitors could remark upon the wonderful design principles, with nobody ever worring if the cards are annoying/pointless/confusing in actual play

Your feet, obviously.

Dropping it down to just "then shuffle" feels like a half measure, and I would prefer it to be dropped altogether on cards that aren't e.g. Vampiric Tutor.

The Japanese ones look very nice, but they also just look like they're from Japan, and don't feel coherent with Magic on any level.

I mean if Yugioh which is super wordy and weird and unintuitive can have shuffle be an inherent part to searching your library then Magic can.

wrt the wording of cards one of its most important functions is probably making the process of learning magic easier on fresh players (and on that note i had the desire to teach someone magic for the first time in the decade and being able to just tell them to play the arena tutorial to cover the basics was quite nice)

The frames are gorgeous except for the two sets of three little dots at the top. They feel more sci-fi to me and it doesn't mesh with everything else going on.

It's probably just me, though. I don't see any objective reason why three consecutive dots would evoke that feeling.

The frames seem to divide opinions. I really love them but I am also generally a big fan of art nouveau and art deco. I believe these frames are going for an illuminated manuscript style, to fit the whole 'archive of spells' theme. My friend pointed out that art deco and art nouveau are from the arts and craft movement of art which was inspired by illuminated manuscripts.

I really love both of the special Demonic Tutor arts.

I'd argue that there's likely a stronger constructivist art influence than either of the others, but I definitely see aspects of art nouveau in their composition.

The amount of detail in certain portions does kind of disqualify as a pure representation of any of the styles since most all of them relied primarily on block coloring to emphasize the shapes and contrast.
