I like the idea of partnering him with a recurrable commander with the goal of sac'ing it over and over.

That ultimate is particularly great in a format full of partners.

One of the things I disapprove of in instances like this are how insular the mechanics are to the format.
I loathe the format, but I would have went to snatch up a Szat.
But one ability is FULLY useless outside the format. Not happy. (I mean, yes, it's the worst ability, but it's still effectively lopping off half the card)

How many people have you all deceived?

While I do play Commander (and Oathbreaker, and even Tiny Leaders), I somewhat agree with what you're saying. I've already talked about why I don't like his abilities as well as the fact that they made him a Partner in the AF&S forum, but the reliance of Szat and Jeska's abilities on Commander also feels kind of strange. If people are interpreting the blurry text from the other leaks correctly, the WB Innistrad angel also references Commanders, which is especially jarring because she's technically part of a cycle with the other three angel sisters. Playing characters that I love as my Commander feels great, but I prefer designs that are also playable in other formats. Commander-specific designs almost always feel artificial, which is unsatisfying when iconic old characters are affected.

The default art has been spoiled now, I like it a lot better. After noticing that face, I noted it was by Livia Prima, who I called out back when she showed up around Battlebond as an artist I liked and would want to keep an eye on, as she's one of the few artists I've found who notably rocks the modern digital style.

I feel like I should personally thank someone at wizards for that assignment. It's not the perfect art recalling the Ice Age comics but the red cast on the premium kinda bugged me.

Yeah, I like the normal art a whole lot more, too. The face looks more intimidating, and the tentacles are really shown off, rather than being almost entirely hid behind the textbox. The promo art looks like it was based too directly off a photo of a human, while the normal art looks so much more fantastical.

So the real question is, are you going to change your avatar now that the card exists?
