There's some weird stuff going on over at Wizards. Anyway, kind of neat that, as a pair, they benefit from both halves of a looting effect (the draw and the discard).

They work well in the context that this deck is already built around cycling, which involves both discarding a card and drawing a card.

I'm a little annoyed that Brallin just goes infinite with Curiosity and an 8-card hand.

I'm guessing they found the open-endedness of original partner too difficult to balance.

The lore for the plane also focuses on people making specific bonds with a single monster, and this is easily the best way to convey that concept.
