Lurrus of the Dream-Den |
Legendary Creature - Cat Nightmare (R)
Companion - Each permanent card in your starting deck has converted mana cost 2 or less. (If this card is your chosen companion, you may cast it once form outside the game.)
Lifelink
During each of your turns, you may cast one permanent spell with converted mana cost 2 or less from your graveyard.
3/2

Overall, I haven't much liked the Companion mechanic. That said, this one actually piqued my interest a bit. I could see it being fun in some sort of low to the ground aristocrats deck, maybe alongside another spooky cat.

This makes me a bit sad I took apart my Athreos deck. Converting that to fit this as a companion would've been a fun challenge. Oh well, there's probably better pairings for this anyway.

Wait, is your commander part of your starting deck? It probably is, isn't it? I guess you'd need a very cheap commander then.

Yeah, I just checked. The commander must also follow the rule. That leaves just Ayli, Eternal Pilgrim and Karlov of the Ghost Council as options if you want to pair up with this.

This one seems more for Standard/Modern than anything else.

Yeah, honestly a lot of these seem more fun in standard, but I like the idea of trying to make them work in commander anyway.

I was going to argue but then I saw it said permanent, so instants and sorceries are still uncapped. You'll still notice the condition, but I'd like to see what could be done with standard Lurrus Sligh.

To frame the situation, every modern burn deck now gets to start the game with a copy of this card in their hand. At the cost of 1 sideboard slot. They just get to play commander.
And that's really just the surface level, burn isn't even all that well equipped to abuse the ability.
Not yet.

X is zero when it isn't in the stack, so it lets you recur Walking Ballista every turn. Would that be good enough for the burn decks?

Burn decks are pretty land light and tight on mana, but I could see them packing some Seal of Fires.

This card is probably the hardest of the Companions for Draft so far but it also makes me want to try it the most.

I want to check this: I am 80% sure that recurring Walking Ballista with Lurrus requires X=1, because legality is checked both as you start to cast the spell and when the spell is finalized, e.g., why you can't cast Squee out from under Ixalan's Binding anymore. Is this correct?

Right. I was only thinking about the deckbuilding restriction, not the casting restriction. And anyway, Seal of Fire is a much better rate.

Fortunately, this plays well with those two

Also, it's interesting that it's just PERMANENTS. So you can also fill your EDH deck with a bunch of Wraths regardless of cost

Seems pretty slow, but yeah it'll be interesting to see how these affect standard.

And Goblin Guides, maybe.

Vexing Devil goes in burn enough too and is very likely to be in the GY. Something like 4x Vexing, GG, Bolt, Lava Spike, Rift Bolt, whatever else the cool burn decks use these days, probably slightly spec into Seal of Fire if there were any 2 damage for 1 mana spells, and use the typical fetch-shock perfect base to get Lurrus + a first recast on 4?
