Post subject:  M15 Black/Red Draft

So my first live draft in a while today since I'm on break from my master's program, but I have drafted M15 on MTGO a couple of times. I ended up going 3-0 for first place and didn't lose a game. All 2-0, and I played a third game against two of my opponents for fun and won both of those.

P1P1 went Necrogen Scudder, pick 2 Ulcerate, pick 3 Paragon of Open Graves and off I went into heavy black. I got incredibly lucky to open a P2P1 Soul of Innistrad, then got passed back to back Lightning Strike's and red was an easy second color. My deck:

1CMC
Crowd's Favor
Typhoid Rats
Ulcerate

2CMC
Lightning Strike
Lightning Strike
Lightning Strike
Borderland Marauder
Child of Night
Generator Servant
Altac Bloodseeker
Sign in Blood

3CMC
Necrogen Scudder
Stab Wound
Necrobite

4CMC
Paragon of Open Graves
Accursed Spirit
Accursed Spirit
Accursed Spirit

5CMC
Rotfeaster Maggot
Blood Host
Shadowcloak Vampire

6CMC
Soul of Innistrad

7CMC
Covenant of Blood

Sideboard
Caustic Tar
Festergloom
Thundering Giant
Shadowcloak Vampire
Unmake the Graves
Circle of Flame
Eternal Thirst

I went with 10 swamps 7 mountains I think, but it may have been 11/6.

I spent a lot of time debating playing Caustic Tar over Necrobite, but I didn't. I didn't love my 5 drops, but Rotfeaster Maggot and Shadowcloak Vampire ended up being very good to me. The flying for the vampire was huge. I never once played Blood Host so no opinion on it.

Soul of Innistrad is obviously what it is, as well as getting all of the removal I had. 3 lightning strike, an ulcerate, and a stab wound didn't really seem fair. Crowd's favor is also a very good combat trick.

I'd love to hear feedback on if I should have run Caustic Tar in this deck or any of my other sideboard cards.

Also, the 3 Accursed Spirit obviously stand out, but when I played another black deck with green as his primary they still did well.

Triple Lightning Strike is totally unfair. Nice deck.

Are there any round breakdowns to see how things went? :)

I'm expecting that you usually get out some early pressure each game, and then follow that into Accursed Spirit, taking out your opponent's mid-range with removal until the Spirit wins. But that's just my imagination, and I'd like to see what REALLY happens.

Sorry for the delay.

Round 1
VS Red/Blue, much heavier red, wanted to be very aggressive then tap creatures down with a couple Frost Lynx's.

Game 1, I lead with Altec then Child of Night. I lightning striked his blocker before combat to pump Altac and he went on the defensive quick. He took out my Altec but I had two accursed spirits in play. He played the 4/4 convoke artifact creature but I dealt with it right away, I think with ulcerate.

Game 2, I played the Scudder on curve but he had 2 red creatures out when he casts the red paragon. I followed up with the maggot which completely stalled his attack. I picked his guys off with my removal and won easily.

We played a 3rd game because he felt like he had tough luck (he said he played pro tour and told me before the tourney started that his deck was stacked). I don't recall how I won, but it wasn't close. Lightning strikes are killer against aggressive red decks.

Round 2
VS Green/Black deck that wanted to dump cards in his graveyard and then cast undergrowth scavenger. I had played with him before, he's very good.

Game 1, he mulliganed to 5 cards. I rolled him. Nothing learned.

Game 2, I had Soul of Innistrad and stab wound in my hand so I felt like I was ok trading with him initially, even with his scavengers. So I did, we both probably had 3 creatures in our grave when I cast Soul. He had no response to it, so I pulled my 3 creatures back to my hand and it was over. I didn't need stab wound.

We played a 3rd game because he felt like he was unlucky with his mulligan game 1 (he was). I kept the board clean with my removal, he played his scavenger, and I dealt with it either with a stab wound or ulcerate plus combat. I don't recall. I ended up getting Shadowcloak Vampire out and using his flying to finish him off.

Round 3
VS White/Green token deck. Two raise the alarm, two triplicate spirits, one spirit bond. This was the deck I thought I'd struggle with.

Game 1, he got spirit bond out early and got a couple of tokens off of it. I was too fast though, and two for oned him when he tried to do the +2/+2 plus vigilance enchant on a non token creature. The spirit bond never took over as he kept having to chump block, and by the time he had a board presence I had Accursed Spirit to finish him off.

Game 2, no spirit bond but he did end up getting a raise the alarm off and a triplicate spirit. Still, I just kept attacking and eventually I had him down to 4 life while being at like 13. He tapped out to play the 6/5 regenerate ape while I had my paragon and typhoid rats out. I attacked with my rats and he actually blocked thinking I had a lightning strike in hand. I did not and was happy to get him off the board. I don't recall how it finished, but he didn't recover.

Fun night, I doubt I'll have another draft with 3 lightning strikes again for a long while.

Never played Blood Host, drew it once and didn't need it. I don't know if I like it or not. But I felt like I needed the body plus life gain when I took him.

Plus I don't know if I should have played Caustic Tar. It is a great finisher. Maybe I should have gotten it in.
