Post subject:  Playing what you know seems important in Limited.

The title is a quote from an article that appeared on TCGPlayer today.

Although I am more interested in discussing the quote than the article (although I was confused at first because she posted a sealed pool, said she went RW, then posted a RW DRAFT deck from the top8.)

While you may be more comfortable with one type of deck than another, it's important, ESPECIALLY IN LIMITED, to be able to play all kinds of decks. Sometimes, you open a nuts aggro deck in your sealed pool, or keep getting passed control cards. You could build a bad deck that you know how to play, or a good deck that you can't play for ****. But you shouldn't need to make that decision, because you should know how to play every archetype. Limited isn't a format where you choose your deck, it's a format where you play the deck you're given, and if you can't, you're probably not going to win.

Agreed. I just watched a couple of drafts where a pro forced Rw aggro in full block, and it went badly for him both times. Once he even opened Iroas. He had options both times, but he likes red aggro.

Playing what you know can be a deciding factor when you open one of those sealed pools that allow multiple builds. If it's close, stick to what you're comfortable with. Otherwise, play your bombs and read signals.

I really try to be a dillettant. I enjoy playing different strategies. I just seem to suck with Limited Mid-range decks.

My last draft I decided that I would "Not draft green". I P1P1 a Pheres-Band Warchief, drafted a UG deck that was terrible (didn't even get any centaurs) DESPITE a P3P2 Arbor Colossus and went 0-2/0-4 before gutting out a match win... against my own offspring (whose deck was a bit better than mine vs. the field - he actually went 2-4 in games and was mana screwed in a few).

How bad was this deck? I had zero removal beyond 2 retraction helix and a sideboard thassa's ire, and the bottom of my curve was 2 triton shorethief, a renowned weaver, a bronze sable and a voyaging satyr.
