So it's SOM on flashback this week so I thought I would roll back the sets and see how we do. Before starting I should probably confess to being extremely partial to infect in this set so that may make some of my picks a little bias: P1p1 - wow lots of goodies. Blighted Agent, Artillerize, Fallen Ferromancer and Enslave. I take Artillerize P1p2 - Vault scourge, foil Chancellor of the Tangle but artifact removal is premium in this set so I take Glissa's scorn. P1p3 - Glissa' scorn - passing Cathedral Membrane, Parasitic Implant and Reaper so it looks like the infect plan is out. Liquidmetal coating is now going up in value in my deck. P1p4 - impaler Shrike or Shriek Raptor are the only two good cards. Maybe infect isn't out of the equation as I take the Shriek Raptor P1p5 - Leeching bite - porcelain legionaire and vapor snag are close but this car djust gets you too many two for ones. P1p6 - Leeching bite - I turn down immolating souleater (a 2 card, turn 3 win combo) but must start taking creatures. P1p7 - Shriek Raptor number 2 P1p8 - Mycosytnth wellspring - not a great pack (there was a glistner elf) but this card is great with artillerize. P1p9 - insatiable souleater p1p10 - pestilent souleater (worryingly a blind zealot still in the pack) P1p11 - rotted hystrix P1p12 - numbing dose P1p13 - dementia bat P1p14 - mycosynth fiend (this may well actually make my deck) So after pack 1 I am green and probably white infect splasing red. |

ARGH - open up one of the best limited rares in Cryptoplasm but not going double blue. P2p1 - choice here is between relic warder and verdian claw (with a priest of norn to note). As I am not wedded to white I take the claw P2p2 - Plague Myr. There is Plaguemaw Beast, Rotwolf, Piston Sledge, Banishment Decree (and another quicksilver geyser as there was in pick 1) but I like the infectious mana accelerant. P2p3 - 2 Leonin Skyhunters and a Priest of Norn. I'm stick with the infect plan so take the Priest. There is also a choking fumes but I don't think this is a good card. P2p4 - Creeping Corrosion. In this set this is a quasi wrath of god. Yes please (next best for me is an Ichor Wellspring) P2p5 - Tangle Mantis over Kemba's Legion P2p6 - Priest of Norn over a Core Prowler P2p7 - Tine Shrike (okay infect is looking good) P2p8 - Kemba's Legion P2p9 - Tangle Hulk over a quilled slagwurm P2p10 - Vivisection P2p11 - Mirrorworks P2p12 - Frantic Salvage P2p13 - Training Drone P2p14 - Training Drone Well that didn't go so well. We need a good SOM pack here. |

P3p1 - Cystbearer - there is a horizon spellbomb to help with my red splash and a glint hawk ideal but I am all in on infect. P3p2 - Necropede passing throne of geth and Genesis Wave P3p3 - Horizon spellbomb over Glint hawk and Glint hawk Idol P3p4 - Trigon of Rage awsome with infect flyers P3p5 - Rust Tick over archers (sad to see a plague stinger go by but I am not black). P3p6 - Cystbearer over gold and copper myrs P3p7 - Carrion Call over Liquidmetal coating (this is a tough pick) P3p8 - untamed might (a great finisher for infect) P3p9 - Wing puncture (SB card) P3p10 - Instil infection P3p11 - Infiltration LEns P3p12 - Vigil for the Lost P3p13 - Flesh Allergy P3p14 - Whitesun's passage. Well that was okay but nothing amazing |

Okay so here is the deck Lands (16) - I have 3 accelerants in the deck and only 2 five drops so 16 land is fine 1 Mountain (and 2 ways to find it) 7 Plains 8 Forests Creatures (12) Plague Myr Necropede 2 x cystbearer 2 x priests of norn Mycosynth Fiend Rust Tick Tine Shrike Tangle Mantis 2 x Shriek Raptor Spells (12) Horizon Spellbomb Mycosnyth Wellspring Trigon of Rage Viridian Claw 2 x Glissa's Scorn 2 x Leeching Bite Creeping Corrosion Carrion Call Artillerize Untamed Might Th is what I call a 1.5 deck. I am happy with 2-1 and unhappy with 1-2. Creeping Corrosion in this deck is fantastic as I run almost no artifacts. |

p1p1 artillerize was definitely not the right choice with all those other great cards in the pack. p1p8 Glistener elf is an amazing card that should not still be in the pack, and a good sign that infect is open. p2p2 I'd grab the rot wolf over the myr. It's just a really good card. Why are you splashing artillerize? It's definitely not worth splashing, expecially if you can't take advantage of the burst to the face, since you're infect. |

R1g1 - on the draw this is almost the perfect opening hand. Plains, Forest, Wellspring, 2 x Preists and Artillerize. My turn 3 cystbearer is matched by his turn 4 GSZ into Viridian Betrayers but leeching bite means 3 poison counters for him and no creature (did I mention how good that card is). My opponent immediately redraws GSZ and gets rot wolf but that is arterillized and my opponent is at 5 posion. A neat Ichor Wellspring and Leonin Relic Warder nets my opponent two cards and chumps my cystbearer and Melira's Keepers just shuts me down on the gorund. Still going into turn 7 my opponent has 7 posion counters, a keeper, 5 lands and 6 cards in hand I have 2 cystbearers, 1 Shriek Raptor and a Priest. He needs at least two creatures just to survive the turn. He plays a splicer to get the two but I topdeck claw for the win. So a GW infect mirror. No SB R1g2 a mull to 5 is not a great start and I keep plains, forest, spellbomb, raptor and rust tick. When my opponent finally shows up he has a turn 3 skyhunter against my rust tick (havig drawn 3 forests by now). He relicwarders my spellbomb and i lose drawing 6 land in 7 turn and he plays bellowing tanglewurm SB - wingpuncture and plains for a glissa's scorn and creeping corrosion (he hasn't shown my any artifacts yet) Tangle Hluk in for Roted Hystrix R1g3 - a very close game. He goes archers, rot wolf, thundering 5/4 trample guy. I go rust tick, turn 5 raptor (traders with his archers), turn 6 raptor, turn 7 carrion call and glissa's scorn turn 8 untamed might for the win. So 1-0 |

Artillerize is one of the best removal cards in the set. In P1p1 I have no idea I am going infect and it is the strongest card especially as I hope to pick up some wellsprings. Glistener Elf is only good in a deck with lots of proliferate as after about turn 2 it never deals damage I think you are right about Rot Wolf in general but I just want to accelerate out my raptors. Had I not got 2 cystbearers in pack 3 then I definitely made the wrong pick. |

R2G1 - his turn 2 legionnaire met with a scorn to take him down 3 life (not exactly relevant against infect). He follows up with Skyguard, Blinding souleater (which is contained by my rustic) and spin engine. I have out Trigon of Rage, Plague Myr and Raptor with untamed might in hand. He taps out to play Priest of Urabrask and Spiralling Duelist. So this is the board position. Him 20 life 0 poison. Tapped out with a Myr (from a spellbomb), blinding souleater (tapped down), skyguard, priest, duelist, spin engine. Me forest untapped, leeching bite, forest and untamed might in hand. Plague Myr and Shriek Raptor. He attacks with the Spin Engine (havng made me not block) and I take it. My turn, play forest, swing with raptor (unblocked), trigon untamed might for 5 win. I think about bringing in wingpuncture for creeping corrosion but he has shown me three artifacts and the duellist implies there is more. Leeching bite should be immense for me. R2g2 - i make a major misplay. I could crreping corrosion away swouleater, glint hawk idol and legionnaire but i wait a turn and time to a huge ferrovore. If I played the corrosion i would have won. R2g3 - i lose due to drawing 7 land in a row. This is a really annoying loss as I had my opponent dead in game 2 but for the misplay. Still, you live and learn. |

So the final round. For some reason my opponent couldn't have submitted his deck so ended up with an 81 card library so I quickly one game 1. Game 2 he plays sword of war and peace. I cry Game 3 he plays sword of war and peace 3 times (yes 3) due to salvagers but somehow I manage to kill it each time (2 scorns and corrosion). In an epic game I win the turn before he would have killed me. So there you go 2-1 but should have been 3-0 (my opponent from round 2 won 2-0 in the final). Nice to do some historic drafts. |
