While up at the inlaws in Washington, I escaped to a draft in Portland on 12/30. They were out of Theros so we did a RTR block draft.
People liked this format?

I P1P1 a beetleform mage and cut simic. Still managed to get green on my right and and blue on my left.
I did really like this deck though:

I did pass a drudge beetle and another slaughterhorn, but I took I think a dreg mangler and a hidden strings over them. I shipped a gazillon red cards in Gatecrash and that guy won the draft.

16 creatures
1 crosstown courier
1 shambleshark
2 beetleform mage
2 wind drake
2 dreg mangler
1 crocanura
1 slaughterhorn
2 korozda monitor
1 voidwielder
1 korzda gorgon
1 haunter of nightveil
1 nimbus swimmer

7 spells
1 phytoburst
2 hands of binding
1 agoraphobia
1 seek the horizon
1 krasis incubation
1 golgari keyrune

1 dimir guildgate
1 simic guildgate
6 forest
6 island
3 swamp

sideboard (used against slow decks)
1 last thoughts
1 diluvian primordial

sideboard (didn't use)
1 woodlot crawler
2 mizzium skin
2 opal lake gatekeepers
1 mindeye drake
1 faerie imposter
1 tower drake
1 maze behemoth
1 izzet cluestone
1 auger spree

However, I was a little disappointed because I went 1-0-2. On the plus side, this was good for second place! The guy who came in third had _3_ draws (one with me round 1). Guy was a very slow player and played a very durdly deck. Game 1 I ground him down with flyers but it took 40 minutes. I mulled to 5 in game 2 and I probably should have just conceeded and tried to play game 3, but I am sure we'd have drawed anyway. He did beat me in turns. Match 2 was a pretty easy win against a newbie, although I lost game 2. Match 3 game 1 I was playing the guy to my right who had some kinda esper quasi mill deck. With crypt incursion. I had lethal on the board when he bounced his flyer (deputy of aquittals) that I had incubated to his hand. That card had paranoid delusions and I think hidden strings on it. Those 2 cards going to his 'yard gave him 7 and he milled my last 7 cards with psychic spiral.

Game 2 I won pretty handily but it went to turns so no game 3.

Bleah.

IIRC, ciphered cards are exiled, so they don't go to the yard when the critter dies. But I play online, so I don't really need to worry about these things. Also, I'd swap Seek the Horizon for the Maze Behemoth, and start the Primordial over the Mangler. 5/5 fliers are good, and this one can many times remove the only opposing blocker with its CIP ability.

Yes, this format is slow, but I enjoy long, controlling games. Winning a game from 1 life against 46 with no life gain kind of sticks in memory :)

Yes, Seek the Horizon was useless. I put it in as desperation fixing if I got stuck on GU or GB on turn 4. I had the primordial in about 1/2 my games but I was a little worried about aggro in G1s. Why cut a mangler over a monitor? My other "slow" cut was ... crocanura or shambleshark. Having only 2 evolvers is a little meh. But that was situational.

Funny about the ciphered cards because as I typed it up (6 days later) I realized that we might have done it wrong.

I enjoy long games, too. I don't enjoy draws. In my last 4 drafts/standard tournies I have not lost a match but have 5 draws.

Mangler because it's black and an aggro card, and I didn't read your deck as aggro. Monitor is more expensive, but it cuts down on black, and it's solid.

Hilariously, it was aggro compared to the 3 decks I played. Beyond a couple mulls to 6 I didn't have too much trouble with the manabase. I left the behemoth out because I already had 4-5 5+ drops and not too many multicolored cards that really wanted trample. The other card I wanted to play but didn't was faerie imposter. I figured the bounce clause negated the value of an early 2 power flyer.

Tower drake is a perfectly serviceable flier. Phytoburst is unplayable.

Tower drake is playable but I have too many 3 drops. Phytoburst speeds the game up (if you have evasion in spades). I think this is relevant if you are racing and you want to mess up their clock math. It is pretty meh because LOL SORCERY SPEED.. but so are 1 T flyers for 3 that you can't even activate. Also given the format you can probably get an early guy through no blockers/no removal for like 7 or 8.

it did actually shorten the game a turn because I had a strong flyer and a weak flyer and villian played a flying chumper. So phytoburst solved that edge case. ALso, hands of binding!

I could see playing Last Thoughts or the Primordial over burst and seek the horizons though (which was worse than 'burst)

That's a lot of text defending phytoburst.... I would venture to say probably too much.

RTR block was pretty miserable. The only reason I really liked it was because of Boros Battleshaper. Loved that card.

This deck is also comprised of the three worst guilds. With 4 aggressive creatures with evasion out of the DGM pack, I would've focused on drafting solely in those colors or enablers. Phytoburst isn't unplayable, but it's darn near close. Usually cards that accelerate inevitability should go to slots that can interact with your opponent's board.

RTR was a format where you played the table, so to speak. People were greedy, so yeah, they tended to play durdly decks that gained a lot of power on turn 6 or turn 7. If you could find a way to play under them or go over the top, you usually won your pod. In that sense, as with most limited formats, being able to play 2 colors was much more powerful and rewarding in the short- and mid-game than in the long-game. Additionally, in mana-sink cards like Beetleform Mage, you're losing out in consistency by not dedicating enough sources to pumping her while also reserving mana to cast additional spells--those 4 black sources, I mean. With that in mind, I think I would've fielded something like this:

1 crosstown courier
1 shambleshark
2 beetleform mage
2 wind drake
1 tower drake
1 crocanura
1 slaughterhorn
2 opal lake gatekeepers
2 korozda monitor
1 mindeye drake
1 voidwielder
1 diluvian primordial
1 nimbus swimmer

2 mizzium skin
2 hands of binding
1 agoraphobia
1 krasis incubation

1 dimir guildgate
1 simic guildgate
8 forest
7 island

It's not particularly fast in of itself (not enough 2-drops; probably needs one more), but it becomes devastating to deal with by turn 5 or 6 when you have a board full of evasive creatures as well as stuff gumming up the ground.

possibly I trapped myself into splashing black by taking a Haunter of the Nightveil early.
