With the completion of the first Theros draft I figured I'd start up one more.

Pack 1:

Prophet of Kruphix
Purphoros's Emissary
Kragma Warcaller
Erebos's Emissary
Cavalry Pegasus
Triton Shorethief
Returned Centaur
Pharika's Cure
Nimbus Naiad
Savage Surge
Disciple of Phenax
Last Breath
Demolish
Yoked Ox

Nimbus Naiad... although there's lots of good stuff in this pack. I feel like this is a final exam.

Prophet of Kruphix

Lots of viable first pick in this pack, so it really comes down to a choice between decks. A well-built big green deck that lands the Prophet is practically unbeatable, so I'd like to try for that. But the Naiad and the black Emissary are equally tempting.

Jesus that's a tough pick. Thoughts:

1. E-Emissary will let us pick up a centaur on the wheel.
2. P-Emissary is really good but red is garbage, and we'll probably pick up nothing we want on the wheel.
3. Nimbus Naiad is really good but in the most drafted color and this is a terrible pack for blue.
4. Where the hell is all the green?

I think you pick naiad. But my gut says Erebos's Emissary, so I'll go with that,

Just as an aside, Prophet sucks. Like bad.

How is it even close to a bomb?

Because it does stuff.

It costs no mana, it makes attacking hard for your opponent if you are holding a card, it makes blocking hard for your opponent if you have a card in your hand and enough mana to potentially bestow something, it allows to pay lategame mostruous costs the same turn you play the creature, you can develop your board and grip tide something...

By definition, that's not a bomb, that's a card that needs other cards to win. Bombs don't need other cards to win--the exception might be Pack Rat, but you draw cards every turn anyway. I think on a 5 scale I put prophet, in Theros, between a 2.5 and a 3, whereas I put the Emissaries and Naiad at 3+s.

Prophet works in theory, but its cost and body is prohibitive. By the time you get to 5 mana, your board and your opponent's board are already developed. Creatures as combat tricks is cool and all, but you're probably not going to have a lot of cards in-hand at that point that matter for the board state. It's also a 2/3. That's a horrible body for 5 mana. Without a way to ensure you have 5-drops or multiple 2- and 3-drops in hand (like drawing cards), Prophet becomes a costly attempt at building a magic Christmasland scenario. I've never seen anyone win with it that wasn't going to win anyway. Additionally, it's a 2-colored-mana card in a fairly weak pack on pick 1. If we pick it now and GU is closed, we just completed wasted a pick.

I almost took Prophet... but frankly you need card draw to power it. I actually like the Naiad over Emissaries because it's the only blue card in the pack and frankly it's cheaper. They can all be splashed.

I have seen the Prophet get out of hand before so I am going to agree going this way.

i think i would go with erebos's emissary as well because it's easy to splash and is still very strong. prophet is going to be much more difficult to splash if the colors don't work out, and even if they do, prophet is also very very easy to remove. emissary would only lose out to griptide.

This is tough. I really want the Naiad, and perhaps getting a blue card pick 2 will cut blue for anyone 2-3 seats down, getting us lots of blue picks 1-3 pack 2.

You might be able to say the same thing about Erebos's Emissary.

Naiad. Evasion is just too good.

Anything other than Prophet of Kruphix is the wrong choice.

If you have to ask why, you've never played with it.
