As much... "potential" as Lorthos has, the potential to be cast in this format isn't part of it.

I'll take Nighthawk. 2/3 evasion + lifelink in a format that's all about 2 power 2 drops and all-in aggro seems like a good deal to me.

Hey cool I'm doing a Zendikar draft (my first) next week!

2nd the nighthawl. So good.

That cobra is actually pretty tempting and burst lightning is amazing removal, especially in such an aggressive format, but nighthawk is such a bomb.

What a pack. I'm fine with Nighthawk.

Draft foil cobra and leave the store.

Of course, in real life you take the cobra. However, we don't live in real life, so we take the nighthawk.

A zendikar foil lotus cobra can be had for $11.00 plus shipping. It's not exactly a 401K plan.

I knew Vampire Nighthawk was a bomb before I knew what a bomb was.

Nighthawk was the first card I played against that made me realize how a single card can warp an entire game. Like, I'd played against Wolfir Silverheart by that point, but I chalked up its easy victories to being insanely overpowered. Nighthawk isn't subtle exactly, but it just packs a whopping punch and is incredibly difficult to race. It's why I lost an M13 prerelease, womp womp.

Lots of goodies in this pack. For some reason I remember talk of spidersilk net being better than it looks, but those allies look tempting too--a bear and a gray ogre at common in a limited environment is more than fine, and these look like they can get out of hand. Scholar is a looter, and barrage gets better as the game goes on, though it commits us early to red. Torch is fine too.

Having no info/experience with the set though, I think I'll stay in color and go sell-sword and we can pick up something on the wheel.

Black is the worst color for allies in that format. Sell-sword is the worst of his cycle and almost all other black allies are crap. Agadeem Occultist is the only good one, but he's a rare in worldwake, so...

If we go for allies, the pick would Oran-Rief Survivalist. He's good enough on his own and green allies are significantly better than black ones (though still not my favorite color for allies... I much prefer blue and white). However, if we do go the ally route, we'll probably abandon our nighthawk.

I don't quite remember how good blazing torch was. The interaction with zombies and vampires is significantly less relevant than in innistrad, but it's still useful. On the flip side, creatures with 2 toughness or less are a lot more important in zendikar than they were in innistrad, so its removal mode is better.

Quest for the Gravelord was very hit or miss. Amazing if you can get it turn 1 and have sufficient removal to back it up, but terrible topdeck. Overall, I'd avoid it.

Guul Draz Vampire requires your deck to be very aggressive. Can be pretty potent with early equipments. Once it kicks in, it becomes a significant threat, but unless you equip it, it doesn't help you get there very well. I typically avoided them unless they were late or my deck was right for them.

Spire Barrage was very solid if you were very red. It's a card you can often pick late because not everyone's interested in it.

This pack is pretty tough. In the end, I'll listen to my bias towards looters and pick Reckless Scholar, though I'm interested in hearing other people's opinion.

There are some formats where the inevitability you get from looting into perfect draws will win you games. Then, there are some formats where you're often going to need to trade your looter for their 2 drop to survive. I'm pretty sure that Zendikar is the latter, and I'll go with the blazing torch.

Torch. Colorless shock that requires a creature is cool stuff.

This is true of 3x Zendikar. Worldwake slows the format considerably.

Well, with Vampire Nighthawk already in your pool, seems that you already have some removal going. I don't think this would be a terrible pick. At uncommon and only on pick 2, there's a good chance we'll see at least one more... No one else is gonna go with it but:

Quest for the Gravelord

Torch eeks out for me, I'm tempted to force hyper aggro vamps, but its too early to commit to it with a merely 'okay' card otherwise.

So Torch.

I think we can safely say we are unlikely to get a single better card that VN and it requires primary black.
Given that the black allies are bad (stipulated by Filodel). I would reduce our choices to:
- the two equipment
- the 1/1 vampire
- quest for the gravelord

I have played a few casual games with the last two and they did some work....in fact all these cards are pretty close. If I could gauge which black card was less likely to wheel I would pick this one... but I think... blazing torch because it's tech against our Nighthawk breaks the tie for me.
