So I played a little $15 BFZ sealed event (small payout, $5 in store credit to 2-8, #1 gets $10).
My pool was ok in power but quite difficult. I might post it later if folks are interested. Roughly -- blue was the deepest color but I couldn't really pair with anything, black, white, red were all reasonable but too shallow (5-6 cards). I ended up playing a mix of URb and UWb (with evolving wilds) and a 8-8-4 mana base.
Lost a close match one -- mulled to 5 in game 3 and refused to acknowledge
Voracious Null as a threat and died.
Match 2 my son got paired down against me. I actually "won" all 3 games but conceeded the last 2 so he could make the top 8 if he won.
Now the hat trick:
Match 3. I lost game 1, and won game 2 when I kept a sketchy 5 lander and drew into a curve.
Game 3 was a battle.
I had just caught back up but was down to 5 life (due to unblockable predators). Opponent is at 15.
Opponent's board is:
benthic infiltrator,
Valkut predator,
Coralhelm guide,
mist intruderMy board is:
Wave-wing elemental ,
Bane of Bala Ged, and
Cryptic Cruiser (stolen via exert influence) + 7 lands. I have in hand
Benthic Infiltrator,
Ghostly Sentinel and 2 lands.
I attack with Bane, he sac's 2 lands (bringing him to 3 so he cannot activate Coralhelm Guide), he goes to 8, I play
Ghostly Sentinel and I feel pretty good. He has 2 cards in exile.
I did not:
a) Attack with elemental (for 3 or 5 but I think he chumps with Mist Intruder). (Misplay 1)
b) play another land and play Benthic Infiltrator (Misplay 2 -actually maybe this didn't matter)
His turn: He attacks me for 1, and plays touch of the void to the face, dropping me to 1. Ooops.
I attack with all my guys, he blocks everything but sentinel, takes 3.
finally, the one I didn't see until I conceeded and my opponent pointed it out.
c) I forgot that I had guys exiled that I could process to tap his guys with cryptic cruiser! (
That alone is GG because I can pay 6 tap his mist intruder and 1 blocker and swing for 3+3+3 (not including land fall trigger).
But even just attacking with the elemental the turn previous kills his intruder, and with landfall I have lethal.
Not casting the infiltrator I guess only cost me 1 damage, but it could have mattered, and I think it's way more likely to matter than holding a land. Not my finest hour, but at least it was in a meaningless game.
