Interesting pick there Cato. Boring pick there zenbitz/tmg. Boo.

Are we really doing this already? Razzing other people's picks for being 'boring'?

I see now that Hierarch went #2 in the OP's draft... but nobody played either of the archetypes I had in mind when I took it.

I think that's why hierarch is good early pick, goes in a several decks.

Given tha he started with the trash talk, it's unclear to me that bob is an "interesting" pick as opposed to just a bad one (it's obviously a great card... I presume he has some kind of plan). With the caveat that I have no idea what I am doing.

I'm not committed to anything yet except that it'll most likely be Green. If there's a green-involved archetype you want to chase me out of, you best plant your flag at pick 10.

Green can support two people, I have a couple archetypes I'm interested in, but Birds is pretty key in any multicolored green deck.

Getting snapcaster mage and lightning bolt at picks 8 and 9 seems very good. I'll see what is more open later I guess, but I'm taking my top cards here.

I feel like Felb sensed pressure from multiple angles on that nexus

Yeah, trying to pick it up pick 14 was a gamble.

The tough question is, had you taken bolt at 3, would Goblin Guide have still been available at 14?

Bolt goes in way to many decks to not be picked in the first 8 picks. I think it boils down to the locking yourself in one archetype vs staying open debate.

Bolt goes in a lot of decks, but then, is it important enough in those decks to take during the first round?

GGuide was a signal for people to stay out of RDW as much as it was a pick.

Yes, because then you can jump in those archetypes once you know no one is drafting them. That's the concept of staying open.

When it's one of the only cards in that deck that is likely to be hotly contested, yes. Pick priority isn't nearly so much about how important the card is to your deck, so much as about which cards will others want and which ones that you want will be left for you uncontested circa pick20 because other decks won't use them.

I don't even think it's about staying open. I could imagine already having a planned decklist written down... and realizing 15 of the 23 nonland cards will be completely uncontested. Several of of those might be the most crucial cards in the planned deck, but they can easily wait until pick 20, and the cards that have to be taken early aren't the important ones, just the contested ones. Rashad's Laboratory Maniac deck didn't even bother to take Laboratory Maniac until pick 16. Meanwhile 5 of his first 8 cards taken were lands.
