Barkhide Mauler - on par with Wirewood Herald in power

You should always be locked into elves. Unless you get something like one of the Ones. Beasts aren't a bad choice if you manage to first pick a Cliffs (pretty sure that's Onslaught) but you often end up taking a bunch of elves because of mana.
If you aren't Elves, you probably want to aim for Beasts or Zombies. Zombies have a one, a powerful "tap five" lord, the trailblaizer for evasion, and reach (Shepherd of Rot) as well as a board wipe effect.
Like, we saw what was probably the best Soldier card earlier (Catapult Master) but soldiers aren't that great. Wizards have a One, but a lot of Wizards are lackluster, like a lot of blue creatures back in that day. They however have a number of Mistform creatures (changelings, sorta) and Imagecrafter, which is a strong effect in this format.

Well thats a pause to the elves. I think this comes down to a 3 way split:
- Venomspout Brackus keeps us green
- Crown of Ascension can be a finisher for elves and keeps us in
- Swat is the strongest card in the pack.

At this stage I think I want to stay green so will take Brackus but happy to hear arguments for the other cards.

I think we take Crown of Ascension here; Brackus is good, but Crown is a finisher, as you said.

Venomspout Brackus.

When this gets active, flyers stay out of combat. Often, you kill two critters with it when it morphs. It's big, every other color needs to work quite hard to kill it. Crown is a gimmick, potential card disadvantage, with no good targets yet in our deck.

Goblins was the best, however.

Venomspout Brackus My recollection is that the crowns were trash.
