@Shockwave - have you considered the cheap smart phones? My wife bought a "gophone" (no contract) recently and uses it on wifi. Here's the one she bought for $50:

I think there are "no contract" phones even cheaper than that. I would check out Walmart's phone section. You can try the phone out and if you don't like it, you can return it. Check the return period though...I think it's short, like 15 days. I've done this before when I wanted to test if a different carrier would get a better signal at my house...the signal wasn't better than what I had, and I returned the phone without any problems.

It's better than no thought at all. To be honest need to find a way to pay bills first (aka a job) and see how things go from there.

That and one for my dad as well who my current dying phone's plan is with would help...

For the phone, I was suggesting using it only over wifi and not using the cellular towers. Like free wifi at coffee shops and restaurants for example. But that doesn't help much given your priorities...

Just FYI, rstnme says that Comcast said they would be hooking him up this weekend, and he should be back on then...but he has low confidence that Comcast will actually deliver on that promise, so that's where it stands for now. But he's missing the game and looking forward to getting back to it.
