"Go to Hell."
Returning to Florence from the Third Crusade, our hero, Dante, has discovered his beloved Beatrice horribly murdered. An apparition of Lucifer appears before him, taunting Dante that Beatrice's soul now lies within the depths of Hell. Chasing after the apparition, Dante follows Lucifer right through the gaps in the world to the very Gates of Hell, where his quest to save his lost love begins. But with few allies and countless enemies, can Dante survive through the trials ahead to reach his goal, or is he diving into a pit of his own everlasting damnation?...

WELCOME TO DANTE'S INFERNO MAFIA
Dante's INFERNO Mafia is an expert level Mafia game designed by me (Zinger2099) based heavily on the Video Game by the same name. The video game is based on part one of the medieval epic poem, The Divine Comedy, commonly referred to as Dante’s Inferno, by Dante Alighieri. The dark fiction gave birth to the Tuscan Italian dialect and is widely considered the work that has defined the western world’s contemporary conception of hell and purgatory. The poem tells the tale of Dante who journeys through the twisted, menacing nine circles of hell in pursuit of his beloved Beatrice. The Mafia game will feature many of the same themes and characters without heavily following the pillars of story and laws of the fictional universe. But enough backstory, after all you're here to play the game, so let's get down to the nitty gritty.
RULES
1. Read and obey all the rules. If you don't understand a rule, ask me about it (through PM).
1. a) If your Role PM or anything the GameMod sends you contradicts a rule, it takes precedence.
2. Respect your fellow players and the GameMod (me). 3. Participate in the game. I require a minimum of 3 content-related posts per Canto (see below).
3. a) If you're going to be away for more than 48 hours, please let me know.
4. Once you've been removed from the game, cease all posts in the game thread. Not even a 'Bah' post. 5. Deadlines are hard-set. If I am late for a deadline anything posted past the deadline won't be counted. 6. Any or all of the following:
6. a) Deleting or editing posts 6. b) Posting in white, unreadable or 'invisitext' 6. c) Quoting or paraphrasing any part of any PM received by the GameMod. 6. d) Communicating out of thread without explicit permission from the GameMod.
7. Have fun.
GAME MECHANICS
Cantos
Instead of the traditional Day phase, this game will be broken up into Cantos. A canto is a principal form of division in a long poem, especially the epic. The word comes from Italian, meaning "song" or singing. Each canto will last exactly 120 hours (5 days) starting from the moment each living player has made a post, or until a Lynch is achieved, whichever comes first. This means that a canto can in theory be stretched to being quite a lot longer if one player refrains from making a post (however, excessive inactivity will be punished, sloth is one of the deadly sins after all). When a canto ends, the next canto will begin immediately following a post from me. There is no "Night" phase in Hell.
Each circle is a location within the game and provides a different benefit or drawback for being in that circle. At the start of the game, almost everyone will begin in a random circle. During each canto, you have the option of moving from one circle to the next. This is done by PMing me your decision to move up or down, and by how much, along with any actions or abilities you may wish to active at the same time. In the next canto, you will find yourself in the newly desired circle. For most characters you can either move up by one circle at a time, or down by up to two circles (it is harder to climb out of hell than it is to dive into it). A few characters might find their movement through circles more liberal or restricted (check your role PMs). Each character has a "home circle", and knows the benefit or drawback associated with that circle. Tourists will have to suffer with not knowing what boon or trap awaits them by entering a circle.
Knowledge that pertains to circles (eg. what circle you're in, what your home circle is, and what powers are associated with it) is free to be shared publicly if you so desire to do so. You still may not directly quote any info pertaining to circles that you are sent.
Alignments in Hell
There are only three alignments to be found in this game. They are:
1. DIVINE ALIGNED. The good guys. You probably won't find very many of these in Hell. Their win condition is to Kill Lucifer. 2. INFERNO ALIGNED. The bad guys. Just about everything you find in Hell will be this. Their win condition is to Kill Dante. 3. COMEDY ALIGNED. The other guys. These are characters whose exact motives are unknown. Their win conditions will vary from one to the next.
Lynches, and Lynch Thresholds
A Lynch ordinarily requires a majority vote (half the living players plus one). A few exceptional characters might have a different Lynch Threshold, which would require a different amount of votes to be Lynched. These characters, if any exist, would be the exception, not the norm. In the event that a Lynch does not occur before the end of a canto, the canto ends with no Lynch.
Voting
Each player has the ability to vote during a canto to attempt to Lynch another player. The accepted format is Vote: PlayerName (note the bold text). Coloured votes help them stand out, but is not a requirement. You do not need to unvote to place a new vote, but only your most recent vote will count (unless you have the ability to make more than one vote). You can elect to vote for No Lynch if you wish to see the canto end without a Lynch. No Lynch has a threshold of Majority minus one.
What can I claim?
Information given to you in private by the GameMod is intended to stay private. You may not quote, paraphrase, or even hint at anything that you have been told from me. The only exceptions to this are:
-Your Role Name -Your Alignment -Information pertaining to circles -You may VAGUELY claim abilities (eg. "I am a variant protective role," or "I am kinda like a tracker in some ways.")
Anything else may not be shared, unless your role PM specifically tells you otherwise.

don't know exactly when this is starting, but I'm moving into a new place on tuesday, and the internet people won't be there to set stuff up until friday. I'll try to find an open network or, barring that, a starbucks or something, but I don't know how my access will be before friday.
I see we can chat now (based on the setup thread). I'm trying my best to not just vote for Alt...I mean, everything he's posted so far seems scummy to me
@Zinger - do we know what circle we are in to start with?

HAH! You're clearly trying to distance yourself from known scum!

So, even with normal games, I'm really not sure the best way to get things started. I mean, we can just randomly jump on someone. But, I guess we're still a few players posting away from the start of the Canto
Actually, the Canto did start since we're posting. But there is a strict deadline of 120 hours after everyone made at least one post. There are 2 ways we can deal with this.
Either we can start talking now, or we wait until everyone posts. The problem with the latter is that we will have only 120 hours after that point. So I'd say the best thing to is just to start with the people already here.
Preview edit: Aww Zinger, why make that post as I'm typing this
