Time: 7:28 am, Monday April 7th, 2014 Location: A small cabin in the middle of nowhere in Texas
(credits roll during artistic shots of the cabin and surrounding woods)
The four of you were friends who went out for the weekend out to Ash's cabin, because.... what could possibly go wrong following a guy named Ashley Williams into a cabin in the middle of nowhere? Nothing bad could come from that. But now the long weekend is over, and it is time to head back to your separate lives, your jobs, and your loved ones.
(fade the title in over a wide shot of the cabin)
Shotguns & Zombies:
Learning to Survive
(title fades out as the camera pans by some feet dragging through the woods)
The car is ready to go, and you all are inside finishing packing your extra clothing and provisions unused during the trip. No one is aware of the very obvious zombies that everyone came to this movie to see. Somehow the director thinks this will be some gigantic reveal despite the title of the movie. This is probably gonna be a straight to DVD release.
(the camera pans over the four survivors so the audience can see them)

OOC:
Please post your character in your first post (no other roleplay). Wait for all characters to post before beginning roleplay.
You may begin with one of the following items:
Baseball bat Main Hand (2 Hands) Bash (Close Attack) | Damage: 1 (non-lethal) 2-Handed Bash (Close Attack) | Damage: 2
Flashlight 1 Hand Bash (Close Attack) | Damage: 1 (non-lethal) Sheds Light (Close Range - Requires Batteries) [begins with 1 full battery]
Machete Main Hand Hack, Slash (Close Attack) | Damage: 2
Pistol 1-Hand Ammo Capacity: 8 Single Round (Ranged Attack - Short or Medium) | Damage: 1 Pistol Whip (Close Attack) | Damage: 1 (non-lethal) [begins with 1 clip]
Shotgun 2 Hands Ammo Capacity: 5 Blast (Ranged Attack - Short) | Damage: 2 Butt End (Close Attack) | Damage: 1 (non-lethal) [begins with 5 rounds]
The Rules
Dice Rolls
Rolling the Bones is what we call the basic mechanic, or game engine, used to resolve actions. It calls for the player to roll a 20-sided die (or in some cases, a pool of 20-sided dice), apply any relevant modifiers to the total(s), and arrive at a single, final result. The higher this result, the more likely it is that the survivor succeeds at whatever it is they are attempting to do. Shotguns & Zombies uses a simple rating system to gauge the relative difficulty, complexity or risk of a given action.
Routine: This is a no-brainer. No need to roll. Simple: This won't take a whole lot of effort. Succeed on a 6+. Easy: This shouldn't be too difficult. Succeed on a 9+. Hard: This could go either way. Succeed on a 12+. Tough: This might be a bit challenging. Succeed on a 15+ Extreme: This is probably a long-shot. Succeed on a 18+. Impossible: This is hopeless. No need to roll.
Setbacks are delightfully nasty. They are the really bad things that can happen to a survivor. They occur when a player rolls the bones and ends up getting a natural 1. The consequence of such an epic fail is that something bad happens. Maybe a survivor's pistol jams or they drop their baseball bat. Perhaps they twist an ankle or their opponent catches them off-guard and inflicts some damage. Whatever the setback is, it should make sense within the context of the action being attempted.
Survivors
Qualities:
• Aim - A survivor's proficiency with guns, firearms and projectile weapons. A survivor uses their aim to make ranged attacks against an opponent. • Agility - A survivor's dexterity, coordination and reflexes. A survivor uses their agility when attempting any athletic-type and finesse-based actions or to defend themselves against attack, danger or bodily harm. • Brains - A survivor's acumen, intelligence and senses. A survivor uses their agility when attempting any cognitive-type actions. • Brawn - A survivor's strength and physical power. A survivor uses their brawn when attempting any physical-type actions and to make close attacks against an opponent. • Spirit - A survivor's courage, magnetism and allure. A survivor uses their spirit when attempting and socially-based actions or to make a gut-check in the face of fear.
For character generation, you get 4 points to spend. Allocate them however you want into those five categories. After, you must remove 2 points in total from skills you have not added to. If you choose to take +2 Aim and +2 Agility, you may remove one or two points from Brains, Brawn or Spirit, so long as the total is -2.
Specialty:
Grease Monkey - I gain a +3 modifier to my rolls when I make repairs to an automobile. Gun Enthusiast - I gain a +3 modifier to my rolls when I try to repair to firearms. Hot Stuff - I gain a +3 modifier to my rolls when I try to influence or persuade the opposite sex. Hotwire - I gain a +3 modifier to my rolls when I try to start a car without the keys. First Aid - I gain a +3 modifier to my rolls when I try to treat wounds. Marksmanship - I gain a +2 modifier to my rolls when making single round ranged attacks. Pick Locks - I gain a +2 modifier to my rolls when opening locks without a key or bolt-cutters. Self Defense - I gain a +1 modifier to my rolls when I defend myself against close attacks. Techie - I gain a +3 modifier to my rolls when I try to repair electronic gadgets and devices. Tracking - I gain a +3 modifier to my rolls when I try to track footprints and other signs of passage.
All:
You have a total of 6 health. You have a total of 3 sanity.
As events unfold and they faced with moments of sheer terror and horror, a survivor is forced to make gut-checks to keep their wits about them. Should they fail a gut-check, they inch closer towards the edge of all out panic. Once a survivor has failed three gut checks, they panic. When a survivor loses their last sanity point or fails a gut-check while they have 0 sanity, they will acquire one of the following conditions:
The basic principles of the items are fairly decent, so we'll probably stick with the majority of what they say they do. Aside from that, we'll take it by a case by case basis as you run into them and we'll work together to keep it balanced.
Changes
We've dropped action dice for ease.
Carry capacity will be whatever makes sense. For instance, if you try carrying two shotguns, five pistols, a baseball bat, a machete, six hand grenades and seventeen clips of ammo, that's probably no good and you'll need to drop stuff. But we'll work on that as we move.
For now, characters should be fairly simple, but if you have questions, please ask.
"See, I've always liked living dangerously, but this is ridiculous. I've been performing under the big top for years, and I thought an audience full of annoying kids was the worst thing that could happen. Sure seems I was wrong."
Mack is a Nimble Survivor with +2 to Agility, +1 to Brains and +1 to Aim, but a -2 to Brawn. He is also a Marksman, giving him +2 modifier to rolls when making single round ranged attacks.. He tries to keep his keep his hair short and spiky, but it is hard to come by hair gel these days. He dresses in clothes that allow him free movement. On his upper body, he usually wears a tank top covered by a vest, to show off his tribal tattoos. The vest is very important, because on the inside it holds his most prized possession: a throwing knife he got from his mentor at the circus.

Gary Beirne, formerly of Beirne's Mobile Tech Support
"Before Z-Day the worst thing I had to deal with was the occasional cranky or even incompetent customer. Not that I'd say that to them, lose business that way. I would prefer things to go back to not worrying about those that have a taste for skull candy, but going to have to survive using what's left to the best possible use,"
Gary is a Smart Survivor with +2 to Brains+1 to Brawn and Spirit, but a -1 to Agility and Aim. He is also a Techie, giving him +3 to rolls to repair electronic gadgets and devices. In a group situation he is usually the Team Player. He has since the zombie apocalypse grown his dirty blonde hair to shoulder length, as well as a short beard. He tends to wear what looks like green mechanics coveralls, most of the time. Prefers to keep a flashlight handy for those hard to see in spaces.
Demetri is a Deadly Survivor with +2 to Aim and +1 to Agility, but a -1 to Spirit. He is also a Marksman, giving him +2 modifier to rolls when making single round ranged attacks.. In a group situation he is usually the Leader. His hair, which is normally kept buzzed tight is beginning to get shaggy, no one has time to cut their hair in the apocalypse. The pants of his old police uniform are worn and stained and the top long since gone, used as bandages and other needs, now only the undershirt remains which no longer retains it's pristine white. At least he still has his trusty leather boots... these 'black Cadillacs' will be getting plenty of mileage on em.
Inventory: Pistol (1 clip)

Quoted and posted for Zinger
"The name's Ash; housewares." I used to be a clerk at a local S-Mart working in the housewares and sporting goods departments. This all changed one day when I went up to a cabin in the woods for a weekend away with my girlfriend. I read some passages from an old book, and before I knew it BAM, zombies everywhere. Now the magic of this evil book takes me from one dimension to another fighting deadites wherever I go. I can only hope one day it will drop me off back home...
Ash is a Deadly survivor, with +2 to his Aim and +1 to his Agility, but a -1 to his Spirit. He is also an avid Gun Enthusiast, giving him a +3 to any rolls to repair firearms. In a group situation, he's usually the Leader. Sporting a chainsaw bolted to his stump where his right-hand once was and a sawed-off shotgun in his left, he looks something like this:

The radio crackles as you four are getting ready to leave. It had been playing some kind of soft jazz, because, yeah, that was an appropriate choice for the setting. But now it's a newscaster's voice, wavering in and out. Either the signal is getting worse, or the broadcast is getting screwed up. Either way, all you hear is:
"..... is saying to stay inside ..... [static] ..... walking again ..... [static] ..... no one knows .... [static] ..... away from the cities .... [static] ...... "
OOC
Just so he can keep his character, I'm going to let Zinger begin with the chainsaw hand and shotgun, BUT, he must choose to have either 5 shotgun shells -or- fuel for his chainsaw, not both. He can have both weapons on him, but the means to use only one to be fair.
Mack rolls his eyes, and turns to Gary.Yo, Gary! Can you do something about that radio, or at least turn it off?He then goes back to packing, while shaking his head.

"I can try, but no promises. This doesn't seem to be coming from our end," Gary said grabbing the radio and trying to adjust the antenna. Figures I would take the car when the van has all my tools.

It doesn't take Gary long to fix up the radio. His expert hands find all the circuits, wires and everything else there is on the radio.... just to find that whoever turned it on this morning didn't even extend the antenna. Pulling it up and twisting the nob for the station half a degree, the sound comes through much more clearly. No surprise, half of these guys never even owned a smartphone anyways, they have no idea what technology is really supposed to be....
"..... [static] ..... widespread panic in the streets. Again, the police are advising to stay inside, close windows and curtains and lock the doors. Reports from all over the United States have been coming in all morning of similar activity in nearly every major city."

In a matter of seconds Gary's face goes from one of amusement at the simplicity of the problem to one of concern. "What in blazes is going on?"
His hand reflexively reaches for his smartphone only to remember that there is no service out here. No service equals no internet to search for quick answers. He sets his expensive paperweight onto the radio stand and continues to listen.

(camera cuts back to the running woman as she breaks through the woods and begins running through the field surrounding the cabin. As the camera does a wide aerial pan, you see about six other figures stumbling after her.)
"You mean like with that 'War of the Worlds' book or whatever?"Demetri asks, shoving the last of his neatly folded up laundry into the black backpack on his bed and zipping both zippers until they meet at the top near the handle.

Confused is now able to roleplay as the woman who has run to the cabin. As for why, Confused was in the next town over when the zombies began to rise and attack, and was out shopping. She made it to the edge of town in her car, and then ran the rest of the way. Aaaaaaaaand, enter Confused!

Cass is a Strong Survivor with +1 to Agility, +1 to Brains, +1 to Brawns and +1 to Spirit, but a -2 to Aim. She is also a First Aider, giving her a +3 modifier to her rolls when she tries to treat wounds. In a group situation, she is usually a Maverick. She was voted 'Most unlikely to become a florist' back in school but that was what she became. A known rebel growing up, getting into brawls and stuff, her short pink hair became her distinctive feature. She also gotten a 'Spongebob' tattoo on her left arm in her later years. She wears a no-longer white shirt, coupled with a slightly torn blue jeans and black cap. Over her shirt, she wears her now muddy work apron smudged with stains of unidentified substances. She enjoys batting and is pretty good at it, although she knows nuts about the many rules of baseball. Her nickname is... *ahem* self-explanatory.
Starting Item: Baseball Bat
And tries her luck with the door handle. Much to her surprise, the door flung open easily enough. She stumbled into the cabin and slammed the solid wooden door shut. Her fingers hastily reached for the door latches and snapped them in place. Then, she grabbed her bat and readied herself.
Only at that instant did she realized she was not alone in the cabin. She spared a glance over her shoulder and was met with eye contact from four men.
"Erm, help?"

"...With what?"
Even as he was asking this his mind was already working on a mental checklist:
What's the problem here?
Radio report of something widespread accross the country: Check. Out in the middle of no where, where city life is less likely to reach us: Check. Random woman runs in asks for help: Check. Cheesy moment: Check.
