Welcome to HOBGOBLIN LIVES: A Spider-Man Mafia 2
Hobgoblin Lives is an advanced bastard Mafia game for 21 players that is loosely based on the three part Spider-Man miniseries of the same name. In it you will find complex roles, all with their own assortment of exciting abilities. Some mechanics will be familiar, others are completely new. The design file has an impressive 29,000+ words in it, which, with 21 players, is more than a thousand words a pop. Expect complex roles. The game is a bastard game, which is my way of telling you to trust nothing! Some things in the game will intentionally deceive you, while others will make it nearly impossible for some of you to win. The game is not meant to be equal parts fair for all players; still, every single one of you has an opportunity to win, however small some of those odds may be. If you're interested in reading up on the inspiration for and development of this game, I've talked about it at some length in the setup thread. Now, I'm sure all of you are very excited to get underway - and so am I - but first, a very important video to set the mood:
The Story Thus Far.... While attending a demonstration in radiology, high school student Peter Parker was bitten by a spider which had accidentally been exposed to radioactive rays. Through a miracle of science, Peter soon found that he had gained the spider's powers...and had, in effect, become a human spider! After the tragic death of his Uncle Ben at the hands of a robber he let escape, Peter learned that with great power must also come great responsibility. Today, Peter tries to maintain a semblance of a normal life with his wife Mary Jane, his job as a Photographer for the Daily Bugle, and still somehow finding time to save the world as...
"But wait," you're saying, "didn't Spider-Man hang up his webs for good at the end of the last Spider-Man Mafia game?" Right you are, my very observant friend! Right you are. But for those of us who weren't around the last time: let's bring everyone up to speed, shall we?
Last time on A Spider-Man Mafia:

Epilogue
With Carnage defeated once and for all, the crisis was finally averted. But at what a cost? So much of the city has been devastated by the onslaught. Many of the cherished heroes of this town lie dead along with the hundreds of innocent people that were murdered. The Daily Bugle office was mostly destroyed and the Publisher and Editor were both killed. Fires in central park still burn, and dried blood adorns walls everywhere. The town was painted red. Many of the citizens who had fled decide not to return for fear that the city is now cursed. The military maintain Marshal Law until things settle down and with the help of businessman Norman Osborn donating money to get things back in order, eventually, the city started to come alive again. But it will never be the same. And what became of New York's Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man? He gave up the tights for good and left New York and was never heard from again.
It's a pretty sad victory, but it is a victory.
THE END.
Wow. With an ending like that, who's left to do the sequel? As it turns out: just about everyone. Thanks to the soon-to-be-a-major-motion-picture Doctor Strange, the McGuffin of this story, the lives of those lost were mostly restored! Without going into too much detail about the ins-and-outs of being Sorcerer Supreme, Doc Strange was caught up in a otherworldly plot to destroy the universe at the time and his intervention to save all of reality restored alternate timelines. The event which would come to be known as the Maximum Carnage Incident still happened - everyone still remembers it - but the catastrophic loss of life was completely undone. Now, the city was an entirely different matter. Restoring the damage wasn't as simple as waving a wand, but there, too, a hero emerged. Legendary businessman Norman Osborn, presumed dead for many years, re-emerged from the ashes of New York city and put his entire wealth and influence into rebuilding all that was lost. Osborn was heralded as a hero by the people, and so it wasn't long before he was ushered into office as New York city's Mayor. His campaign slogan, "Together, as one, we won't be victims anymore!" was wildly popular, uniting the people under a banner of teamwork and justice to build up the strength to prevent events like the Carnage massacre from ever befalling this proud city again. In time all was restored; the people, the city, and even the heart and soul of what made New York great.
And what of Spider-Man? New York's so-called "hero?" He's back too, but he doesn't show his face as much as he used to. Public opinion of the wall-crawler has shifted in recent years to be more in line with that of J. Jonah Jameson's and The Daily Bugle. The people may have survived the Maximum Carnage Incident, but they still remember it like it was yesterday. PTSD was common among people who remember some of the more gruesome events. The people needed someone to blame for what happened, and Spider-Man fit the bill. After all, he failed in his responsibility to protect New York from the likes of Carnage, and when the going got especially tough he walked away. To be honest, I can hardly blame them for their sentiment, and I'm the biggest Spider-Man fan in the room.
But all of that may soon change. A new enemy lurks in the wings, waiting for his entrance cue. Or is it an old one? It's sort of complicated. You see, I'm talking about THE HOBGOBLIN.
Yep, that's the one.
The Hobgoblin first surfaced around five or six years ago and was initially a huge pain in Spider-Man's side. He had all of the strength and arsenal of the original Green Goblin, with some new added gadgets to the mix as well. Perhaps most difficult to deal with was the fact that both he and Spider-Man were fairly evenly matched, so defeating him proved next to impossible. The Hobgoblin made a name for himself very quickly, rising to the top of the seedy underworld of organized crime. Then he died. Or so we believed. The Kingpin produced proof that the recently deceased Bugle reporter Ned Leeds had in fact been the Hobgoblin all along. Case closed. Only it wasn't because by the time Spidey learned of this Ned had been dead for a month and the Hobgoblin was still parading about. Turns out that there was a second Hobgoblin on the scene. Fortunately for Spidey, this wannabe wasn't nearly as capable as his predecessor and so he frequently found himself in jail. Fast forward a few years and the second Hobgoblin, one Jason Macendale, is finally being brought to trial for his numerous crimes. There was only one problem: Macendale wasn't the first Hobgoblin!
For all but select few individuals this was brand new information. It was a smart move in terms of delaying his court case; now prosecuting lawyers had the daunting task of proving which Hobgoblin-related crimes Macendale was to blame for. However doing it with all the news cameras pointed his way was not so smart, after all, you never know who might be watching. You see, the original Hobgoblin wasn't Ned Leeds at all. Ned was an unwitting pawn who'd been duped into helping the Hobgoblin fake his own death. A plan which worked beautifully until Jason Macendale started drawing attention to a five-year-old cold case which risked exposing the lie. The original Hobgoblin was none too pleased with this, so, he paid Macendale a visit.
It seems our worst fears are confirmed, true believers. The original HOBGOBLIN is back, and he's just as deadly as ever. Assemble the troops! Call out the heroes! Prepare yourselves for another exciting episode of...

GAME RULES
I reserve the right to discipline a player for violation of these rules HOWEVER I SEE FIT, ranging from the most insignificant slap on the wrist all the way to the dreaded Modkill, and everything in between. Usually, I will punish violations of the rules by placing MODVOTES on the player in question, or by making it more difficult to achieve your win condition or motivation. Don't break the rules.
1. GENERAL RULES
1.1 Please read, understand, and obey all the rules. Where contradictions exist, specific rules (such as those found in your Role PM) beat general rules. 1.2 Be respectful of the Mod (me) and your fellow players. Mafia can get heated at times; try to remember that it is just a game. 1.3 Please bold anything that you hope me to see. 1.4 Discussions about the game's balance are strictly forbidden while the game is still running. Discuss that stuff after the game is over. 1.5 Communication with anyone outside the game thread regarding this game is strictly prohibited unless you have an ability which allows you to do so. 1.6 The Town win condition is to eliminate or incarcerate all threats to the Town. "You win at the beginning of the Day if no Threats to the Town exist outside of Jail." 1.7 The Mafia win condition is to overpower and defeat all who oppose you. "You win if the Mafia team has equal or greater numbers than the Town, and all Threats to your team have been eliminated or incarcerated." 1.8 Your Character Name & Secret Identity are closely guarded secrets. Do not reveal who you are lightly; there is a role in the game which can kill anyone by correctly identifying their Character Name or Secret Identity. 1.9 Have fun! (This rule is very important)
2. POSTING & ACTIVITY RULES
2.1 Do not edit or delete your posts. 2.2 Do not post at Night unless you have an ability that allows you to do so (however, see Burning the Midnight Oil in Communal Abilities, below). 2.3 Please make an effort to make at least one post in the game thread per week. More often is encouraged, but not required. If you are going to be absent longer than a week, please give me prior notice. 2.4 Once you are declared dead do not post in the game thread any longer, not even just a "bah" post. 2.5 You may not directly quote anything discussed by PM or in a quicktopic anywhere else. You may paraphrase/claim whatever you like (claims can be false so no reason to disallow it), but keep in mind rule 1.8.
3. DAY/NIGHT RULES 3.1 An in-game Day will last until the time limit expires or a vote Threshold has been reached, whichever happens first. An in-game Night will last until the time limit expires or all players have submitted a Night action, whichever happens first. There could also be abilities which end the Day or Night early. 3.2 The time limit for a Day is 120 hours, + 2 hours per living player in the game, while the time limit for a Night is 48 hours, +1 hour per living player in the game. With 21 players alive a Day will clock in at 162 hours, and a Night at 69 hours. 3.3 As soon as a Day ends, whether because the time limit expired or a Threshold was reached, no further votes or actions will be counted even if the Mod is not present to immediately end the Day. Ditto for when a Night ends. 3.4 You may not use more than one activated ability per Day and one activated ability per Night, unless you have an ability which specifically says otherwise. If you are able to use more than one activated ability per Day or Night, you still can't use the same activated ability more than once per Day or Night. 3.5 Generally activated abilities used during the Day occur instantaneously while activated abilities used during the Night occur at the end of the Night all at once, but there are exceptions. 3.6 If you would use an ability which prematurely ends the Day within the first 48 hours of the Day Start, there will be a 24 hour posting period before the Day actually ends. Abilities, votes, and the stock market will not be useable in this time. 4. VOTING & THRESHOLD RULES
4.1 In this game voting is not inherently something everyone can do. To be able to vote you must have an ability which grants voting privileges. Normally such abilities will be passive, but sometimes they must be activated. 4.2 Please make your votes stand out. Making them bold and in colour is a good way to do that. Do not hide them in spoiler tags or using invisible text. 4.3 Your Threshold is the amount of votes required to see you Arrested, or sometimes Lynched. Typically a player's Threshold will be Majority. A Majority is defined as being half the number of available votes (rounded down) plus one, so if there are 10 available votes it would take 6 votes to see you Lynched. 4.4 A Threshold must be reached in order for there to be an Arrest or Lynch. If the time limit on the Day expires before a Threshold is reached, the Day ends without an Arrest or Lynch. 4.5 You may Unvote to remove your vote from a player. Unvoting is not required to place a new vote. 4.6 You can vote for No Arrest if you wish to see the Day end without an arrest. The "Threshold" for No Arrest is always by majority vote, and that cannot be changed.
5. CONDITIONS & EXTRA RULES
5.1 A Condition is an ongoing effect (generally negative) that is afflicting a specific player. The condition might have a predetermined duration or an indefinite one. Conditions are usually (but not always) applied as the result of an ability or vote Threshold being reached. The most common conditions are Incarcerated (see Mechanics) and Roleblocked (see below). 5.2 Roleblocked is a condition which prevents the afflicted player from activating any activated abilities. Passive abilities are unaffected by it. 5.3 Other conditions exist in the game, though they are explained only in the event that you have been afflicted by said condition or if you possess the means of imbuing the condition on another.
SPECIAL GAME MECHANICS
There are several unique game mechanics designed for this game. Please make sure you understand how they work before you begin playing.
$MONEY$ Money ($) is a spendable resource in this game. Most players have varying amounts of Money available to them. The primary uses of Money is to bail yourself out of jail, or to buy corporate Shares. That being said, you can use Money for a number of other uses. Some abilities require you to spend money, for example, or you can bribe other players with Money to get them to do just about anything they are willing to agree upon for the negotiated price. Money can be given to any player at any time during the Day as long as you possess no more than two votes against you and it is not LyLo. Transfer funds by sending the GameMOD a PM. A transfer fee of 5% will be removed from the funds transferred. The gifted player will be informed how much they've been given and the name of the bank account holder that it came from.
INCARCERATION In this game, instead of being Lynched, most players who reach their Threshold are Arrested. A player who has been Arrested is affected by the following condition:
Quote:
Incarcerated (Condition): You cannot post in the game thread or any quicktopics you have access to, and you lose all abilities. You gain the following two abilities:
Visiting Hours: (Activated ability) Day use only. Upon activating this ability you may post in the game thread or any quicktopics you have access to for up to 12 hours, or until the Day ends (whichever comes sooner). Prison Security: You may not be targeted or affected by any abilities (passive or activated) unless they specifically state they can target or affect Incarcerated players.
Incarcerated is a condition, not an ability (though Visiting Hours and Prison Security are abilities). The only way to get out of being Incarcerated is to post bail. If bail is permitted (sometimes it might not be) you may pay it at the beginning of a new Day. Bail costs ($10,000 + ($5,000 x the Day # you were Arrested)) x the # of times you've been Arrested (including this one). So if you are Arrested on Day 7 and it was your first time being arrested, your Bail is $45,000; if it was your second time being arrested, your Bail is $90,000; $135,000 for your third Arrest, then $180,000, and so on and so forth (the odds of you being Arrested that many times are slim).
CORPORATIONS There are 5 Corporations in this game. Those Corporations are:
The Daily Bugle (Public)
The Daily Bugle is a New York City tabloid newspaper most well known for its fiercely negative opinion of the city's (in)famous wall-crawling superhero. It is run by tyrannical Publisher J. Jonah Jameson and its more reasonable Editor-in-Chief, Joe "Robbie" Robertson. Each morning a new edition hits the streets of New York bringing the facts of today's happenings to the news-hungry readers. The Daily Bugle is a publicly traded corporation; shares cost $1,000 apiece. Holding at least one share in the Daily Bugle guarantees that any letters to the Editor you write will be included in the following issue of the paper. The letters may not be anonymous and will list your Character name (but not your player). Being the Majority Shareholder (3 or more shares) of the Daily Bugle lets you review the following issue of the paper as soon as it's completed, prior to release.
OsCorp (Private)
The Osborn Manufacturing Corporation (aka OsCorp) is a multi-billion dollar multinational corporation based out of OsCorp tower in New York. The company is run by legendary founder and CEO Norman Osborn, who, despite having much to do as the recently elected Mayor of New York, still finds time to have a hands-on role in running his company. OsCorp manufactures all kinds of things, from toothbrushes to military tanks. Their primary buyer is the United States Government, with whom they hold multi-million dollar contracts. OsCorp is a privately traded corporation; share prices are typically $25,000 apiece, though shareholders may choose to sell their shares at any price they wish. Benefits for holding a share in OsCorp are known only to shareholders.
Kingsley International (Public)
Kingsley International is a multi-million dollar multinational corporation known for its great success in the high-class fashion design and electronics industries. The company is run by company founder and CEO Roderick Kingsley. Kingsley International is a publicly traded corporation; shares cost $20,000 apiece. Holding at least one share in Kingsley International grants you a considerable return on investment of $10,000 per Kingsley International share held at the start of each Day (as long as you are not incarcerated). If you hold all five shares in Kingsley International, double your return.
Roxxon (Private)
Roxxon Energy Corporation (aka Roxxon) is a massive petroleum corporation run by various owners. Roxxon is the world's largest conglomerate. Roxxon is notorious for its determination to make massive profits regardless of any laws or moral principles, and continually covertly uses unethical and illegal means to increase its profits. Roxxon is a privately traded corporation; share prices are typically $5,000 apiece, though shareholders may choose to sell their shares at any price they wish. Benefits for holding a share in Roxxon are known only to shareholders.
The Century Club
The Century Club is an high-class social gathering spot for New York's wealthiest elite. Unlike other corporations, the Century Club is neither Private nor Public, as it is not a traded corporation at all. Holding at least one share in the Century Club grants you access to the members-only area of the Club. Shares in the Century Club may not be purchased.
Each Corporation has 5 corporate Shares, which at the start of the game are distributed to specific individuals. You are considered the Majority Shareholder in a corporation if you own at least 3 shares, and a Minority Shareholder if you own at least 1. In addition to the unique benefits provided by each corporation to their shareholders, being the Majority Shareholder grants you the following ability:
Quote:
Corporate Vote: You may cast a bonus vote on behalf of a corporation in which you are the Majority Shareholder. Multiple instances of Corporate Vote from different corporations stack.
There are two publicly traded corporations and 2 privately traded ones (and one corporation which is not traded at all). How shares exchange hands depends on whether or not the corporation is public or private. Once per Day, when the stock exchange is OPEN, any player may do one of the following (not an ability):
Buy Public Shares
Choose a publicly traded corporation and the number of shares you wish to buy. Provided you have enough money to buy the requested shares, you receive the shares of the desired corporation. The shares come from the player who had the fewest amount of shares in that corporation first (if there is a tie for fewest, shares are taken at random). The money spent goes into the company, not to the player who's share you just bought. Publicly traded shares can each only exchange hands once in any given Day (so, you can't buy a share and then have someone else buy the share immediately off of you).
Buy Private Shares
To buy one or more private shares, you must first negotiate with one or more share owners (in the Game Thread or privately if you have the ability). All parties must agree to the exchange and a fair price before any trading is done (recommended values need not be followed). Unlike with public trading, the previous owner of the shares receives 50% of the money you spend on private shares bought.
Auction Off
Chose any number of shares you own to auction off to the highest bidder (they may be private or public or both). You must announce your intent to auction in the Game Thread as well as which shares are being offered. From there anyone may publicly bid on the shares being auctioned. Once an auction has begun, the shares being auctioned may not be purchased regularly by anyone for the duration of the auction. After 12 hours have passed, or when the Day ends (whichever comes first), the highest bidder at the time wins the auction and gets the shares, provided they can pay the promised price (if they can't, the second highest bidder wins and the highest bidder spends the Night in jail for fraud). You receive 50% of the money earned from the auction, regardless of whether or not the shares were public or private.
Owning shares in one or more corporation can range from being very useful to nearly useless depending on which Character owns them.
MOTIVATION In addition to your win condition, all players also have a personal Motivation. Unlike in the previous edition of A Spider-Man Mafia, this time around your Motivation is not a requirement for you to win (with perhaps one exception). Your Motivation is just an extra bonus quest, which, while not nearly as important as your win condition is still probably something you'll want to try to accomplish. Some Motivations require you to acquire or do something, while others rely on you preventing something bad from happening. No matter what your Motivation is, achieving it rewards you with some kind of tangible bonus that will absolutely help make winning the game easier for you.
HOBGOBLIN ALIBI Each Town-Aligned player knows the name of one other character who is definitely not the Hobgoblin. Wouldn't it be great if you could just pool all this information together somehow to significantly narrow down your choices? Too bad that the Hobgoblin can straight up kill any player who does so.
COMMUNAL ABILITIES Communal abilities are abilities that everyone has access to at all times as long as they are not Incarcerated. You may elect to use them instead of using your own abilities, if you wish. While you do have access to them, they are not inherently considered yours (they're everyone's), so if you somehow lose all your abilities you may still use communal abilities (again, except when Incarcerated). Using a communal ability counts against your limit of one activated ability per Day or Night.
Quote:
Escape Handcuffs: (Activated ability) Day use only. The 2 most recent votes against you are removed. Burning the Midnight Oil: (Activated ability) Night use only. You may continue to talk in the game thread until the end of the Night.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Once per Day, any player who is not incarcerated may write a letter to the Editor of the Daily Bugle. What you include in this letter is entirely up to you. When you send the letter (to the Mod by PM), identify if you would like the letter to be signed (by your Character name) or if you'd rather remain anonymous. The Editor may decide to include your letter in the following edition of the paper, or they may not. Note that if you are using a Daily Bugle shareholder ability to guarantee your letter gets included you may not chose to remain anonymous.

SAMPLE ROLE PM Curious what a standard Role PM in this game might look like? Here's an example!
Zinger2099 wrote:
Welcome to Hobgoblin Lives: A Spider-Man Mafia 2. You are...
Character
Stan "The Man" Lee "EXCELSIOR!"
Stan Lee is the genius creative mind behind just about every famous Marvel superhero or supervillain to date; including, but not limited to, the Incredible Hulk, the Fantastic Four, Iron Man, The Avengers, and even our very own Amazing Spider-Man. Every comic book everywhere in print today owes something to this man.
Secret Identity & Backstory
You are Mr.Marvel!
Wowee! You found yourself in a comic book story! Again! It's a good thing that you have all the powers of all the superheroes who's mythos you've helped create or add to, or else you'd be wildly underpowered when standing next to the likes of the Avengers!
Alignment, Win condition, & Motivation
Stan Lee is Town-Aligned.
Your Win-Condition is to see all the Threats to the Town eliminated or incarcerated. You win at the beginning of the Day if no Threats to the Town exist outside of Jail.
Your Motivation is to return to the real world! You do this by clicking the logout button in the top left corner of your screen, closing your laptop, and returning to the comforts of real life. Every time you achieve your motivation you will get back valuable time of your life that you would have otherwise wasted on the internet! What a steal!
Arrest Threshold
Your Threshold is Infinity. Infinity is defined as being an innumerable number that cannot be reached. Unless you come up against someone who can cast infinite votes, you aren't likely to be Arrested anytime soon.
Shares, Funds, and other resources
At the start of the game you hold $1,000,000 in your bank account under the name Stan Lee.
You are the Majority Shareholder at Marvel. Holding at least one share in Marvel gets you a free comic book every month.
Autographed copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 [Item]: Are you kidding me? You have one of these handy? Do you know how much this is worth?! Brandishing this incredible item of legendary power is enough to make fanboys everywhere fall to their knees and weep with joy. Or trample over everything in their path to get it. It really depends on how they're feeling on any given Day. On even numbered Days you can't be targeted by abilities, while on odd numbered Days all targeted abilities are redirected to you for the duration of the Day.
Powers and abilities
All abilities are Passive and always in use except where specified. Activated abilities may be used by sending the GameMOD a PM stating the name of the ability, the target (if applicable), and any other relevant information. Most activated and passive abilities can be used any number of times, but some have an expressed limited number of uses. You may only use one activated ability per Day and one activated ability per Night, unless specified otherwise.
"The Man": You may vote as normal for a Mafia game.
HULK: (Activated ability) Day use only. Become the Hulk. Your votes are worth x4 until end of day.
SPIDER-MAN: (Activated ability) Night use only. Become Spider-Man. You may Roleblock a player with your webs!
THE FANTASTIC FOUR: On Day 4 all players not on your team are at -1 to their Thresholds.
IRON MAN: The first attempt to kill you each night fails.
Hobgoblin Alibi
You know that your old buddy Jack Kirby is definitely not The Hobgoblin.

Now, now. The game hasn't even started yet, don't be teasing them so soon.
Also, it's 3:17 am and I have an important photoshoot in 6 hours of which I'll probably have bags under my eyes but makeup can totally fix that (#priorities amiright?). I had hoped to get the game thread set up and send out all roles tonight, but alas that didn't happen. I've got to call it a night.
BUT enough is enough with the delays already. Seriously, everything is typed up and ready to go, I promise! It's just simple a matter of copying and pasting a bunch of roles and sending them out, and finishing up the rules/mechanics section of this page. I expect to be able to launch this game in like... 12-14 hours? After I get back from my photoshoot.
See you on the flip side.
And Hobgoblin, no more taunting players prematurely!
