A few larger barges sit on the river, tied to small piers. The closest one is painted dark with loose fabric hanging from the awning over the deck. In front of it, a group of men and women laugh. Further down is another keelboat with an open deck that is actively being loaded with some boxes, the workers watched by a gruff-looking man.

Moving between the larger boats are rowboats, though most are pulled up onto the riverbank. Rowboats also form temporary bridges that the townsfolk hop over from bank to bank.

Across the river, another barge sits. This one is painted a lacquer red and silks flutter from the windows of the cabin.

The laughter dies down. A woman, now clearly standing in front of the others, turns to look at the older man, looking him up and down. She is dressed in dark blue pants with a dark vest over a white shirt. Her hair is shorn on the sides and the rest is pulled up and hidden under a white wide-brimmed hat. Her face is brown and plain. A sword hangs at her side.

"I am," says the woman, a pleasant smile spreading. "How may I be of assistance?"

Sai looks down the docks at the keelboat that is being loaded and then back at Chen Wu. He takes a deep breath and then steps up behind the man, taking a position to his left.

Chen Wu ignores the woman's quip about his age and decides to play it safe. "I'm sorry to interrupt your conversation, but me and my associates are travelling down the river and figured going in a boat would shorten the travel and bring a pleasent view. I was wondering if you can carry four travelers in your ship." While he talks, the scientist waves a hand to indicate that Swift Snake and Hon Yin should also approach.

The woman pauses to consider. "You all are warriors? Mercenaries? Or missionaries?" She looks at her crew. "I think we can fit you four, if you don't mind a tight fit and can be discreet. How far are you going?"

"Soenglau. Our business does take us that far down Gold River. That'll be two weeks, minimum. So let's say 50 gold for hammock space for the four of you. After two weeks, 5 gold per day. You will have to pay for your own passes, of course, and your own food." A thin blade appears in her hand and she begins to play with it, the polished metal flashing as it turns in her fingers. "I am Zheng Sao, captain—" She flourishes the blade now to indicate the keelboat behind her. "—of The Snow Owl."

The black boat is steady in the moving water, a plank leading from the deck to river bank. The sheer black material hanging over much of the deck is hard to see through in the noon sun.

Hon Yin steps forward, looking over the boat, not sure entirely what he expects to see. He leaves Chen Wu to the negotiations, nodding towards the captain when he is introduced. When discussion begins to die down he steps to Chen Wu's side, placing a hand on his shoulder and smiling. "Expertly handled, my friend. I assure you my stomach will be fine." Finally he turns to the captain, bowing deeply before introducing himself. "Greetings to you Zheng Sao, and to you crew. I am Hon Yin, humble servant of Zoeng Fung, and I extend my thanks to you for your gracious offer."

Swift Snake has been following the conversation silently for all the time. The cost of the journey seems too steep, but for the time being he keeps his thoughts to himself, preferring to share them at a more private setting. Under the cover of his straw hat his eyes scan the boat and the sailors.
Falling after the others, he approaches the captain and, while bowing slightly, he says

"People call me Kuai Shé"
He stands back up slowly and adds
"What business takes you down the river captain?"

He allows full view of his daisho, though he keeps his elven nature hidden under his tengai hat.

Swift Snake, takes off his tengai hat for the first time since you met him.
"Well sometimes appearances can be deceiving captain."
Underneath his hat pitch black short hair frame a rough tan face adorned with a couple of old scars and the weight of the road. It is all illuminated by intense gold eyes currently fixed on Zheng Sao.

After she has had enough time to observe him he covers his head again and after a second slight bow he turns to leave.

Zheng Sao leaves the adventurers be, though she reminds them that payment will be required before they are allowed on her boat. Her crew appear to spend the rest of the day carousing.
