Anyway, I'd like the people with access to the dead chat to not post until I make the ending post, but long story short KoD totally played you all like a fiddle: ZINGER2099,AAARRRGH and the town win, everybody else loses.
Anyway, the roles in this game: Everything stated in the starting PMs was the truth, just each role was bastard a bastard interpretation of the PM in a way. Village and self would have won if they fulfilled their wincon while alive or if they died but the town won. I tried to rite most roles in a way that if not scum they would have a reason to hunt scum, and if scum they would have a reason to want the other guy dead. Village players were meant to remove some pressure from scum if too many of them died early, town had a way to dodge this tho.
Let's start with...
TOWN
KoD
Spoiler
Hello KoD You are a town aligned paranoid .
People are not what they are claiming to be in this hotel, most of them are there to kill you, you know it, like your stagecoach, he should have told you about the storm if he wasn’t planning of killing you in this hotel , but now his partners have betrayed him, that’s why he’s dead.
You suspect, no, you know that the number of players opposed to the town is greater or equal than the number of town aligned players.
You win when no threat to the town remains in the game.
KoD role hinted at either switched factions or really heavy multiball, with the role being called paranoid to imply it might just be false info on top, in truth village and a couple other alignments were designed to work mostly like town, so town was basically always in a pretty heavy majority.
Bastard rating 3/10
VILLAGE
Aaarrrgh
Spoiler
Hello aaarrrgh
You are a village aligned ghostly child.
The hotel was once the cove of a murderer, alas, you felt victim of him, but you managed to tip off further guests of that and even tormented him to madness. Nowadays you mostly lurk around your lost remains buried in the park, pretending to be a normal child.
Yesterday, you sensed some wicked being entering this old hotel, and decided to scare them away, or scare them to death, whatever works.
Due to being a ghost you won’t die when you are killed, but since you died quite grotesquely I wouldn’t bet on your chance of influencing the town that much once lynched. Still your apparent death won’t really stop you.
You win the game when this overbearing wickedness is vanquished from the hotel.
Aaarrrgh role hinted that he might have been a treestumper, in truth he would not have been able to directly post in the thread, but would have died with a mention of his bloody severed hands, and then he would have been able to upvote each post in the thread up to twice for the rest of the game. He also had a very cryptic wincon of needing 2 Scum players dead to win, and obviously tevish and maybe mown might have felt that they wanted a ghost dead.
Bastard role(hidden pseudo miller plus hazy detail... I guess 4?)
Tevish
Spoiler
Hi tevish You are a village aligned vampire hunter. You arrived in this hotel following the trail of Dracula itself, intent to put at end of his menace. You plan to keep low, so instead of whips or exorcisms, you plan to make the vampires' victims drink your personal stash of holy water, should this work, they won't even realize it was you, just to be sure, you are pretending to be a rich baron.
Once per night you may investigate a player, if he or she is a vampire or a ghost you will get a positive result, otherwise you will get a negative result.
Once per game, during the night, you may target a player, if a vampire or a ghost used a killing ability on that player that night, that player doesn’t die and the vampire that used the killing ability dies instead.
You win when no foul monster remains in the hotel.
So yeah, his first ability seems able to catch scum, but all it does is actually flavour confirm 2 townish players, his second ability is a total red herring that can't trigger at all.
Aaarrrgh is arguably not foul (and his flavor explicitly states that he resides in a tomb outside the hotel), the mummy would arguably also have been not foul(and living under the hotel, in the catacombs), dracula would have either left the hotel by triggering his wincon as soon as all other monsters vanished, thus triggering tevish's in turn or, if he was culted.. well more of this later.
Bastardness 7/10?
Zinger
Spoiler
hello zinger.
You are a village aligned assassin of the Yakuza.
The mafia came talking to your clan about rituals to bind themselves with evil spirits, hoping you knew more. Horrorified by someone willing to discard their humanity like that you quickly shoved them off, but you suspect they are now searching even worse alliances here in the deeps of mainland europe.
You plan to murder the band that came to this hotel and set up quite a scene with their corpses to convince their elders that this is not stuff that should be messed with.
Once per night you can prepare an assassination, the second time you target the same player with this ability he or she dies at the end of the next day and nothing can prevent this.
Your alignment returns as mafia aligned to investigators.
You win when the mafia is no more.
Basically a lyncher for the Serial killer, whose pm looks very townish with a miller downside.
His kill flavor was VICTIM tragically died in a lethal accident.
Bastardness 4/10
SELF
Mown
Spoiler
Hello Mown
You are Dracula and are self aligned,
After a bunch of monsters had the insolence of invading your kingdom, you murdered most of them, a couple of them have escaped, but you chased them in this hotel to show what it means to offend Dracula.
Thanks to your wolf form you have an heightened sense of smell, as far as blood goes as least : Once per night you may target a player, if that player has murdered someone in this game you will receive a positive result, otherwise you will receive a negative result.
you win when all the other monsters die.
So, well there are 4 monsters in the set up: the two werewolves, himself and Aaarrgh, but as a ghost aaarrrgh already died, so he doesn't count for his wincon(A mummy is also already dead, which is why I offered it as a fakeclaim to naga). Mown was basically yet another villager, but with very scetchy flavor(dracula is and the guy hunting dracula are both good guys?) and an alignment name that would suggest him that he was not with the town(albeit after some claims he might have picked it up, plus his active ability was pretty pro town and probably hinted that the monsters had klls)
Bastard rating 5/10?
SURVIVOR/MAFIA
Shadow Amber
Spoiler
Hello Amber You are the corrupt mafia aligned survivor hotel manager
Shady things have been going in this hotel, some shadier than others, some way too scary, like the stuff in room 1407, or room 304 or 406 or 101, or the entire west wing.
But this place is important, it's been decades since the Russian mafia started paying you to keep here their most wanted members.
You have taken some handly precaution against the unsavory guests, each night you can lock someone in their room, negating their abilities for that night.
You win the game if a mafia aligned player reaches the endgame as a winner or if you are the last threat to the town still alive.
Ps. When you lock someone in a cell you may also ask me to start a 1 night quicktopic with them, but if you do I will introduce you as a mafia aligned player if they aren’t part of the mafia and as a survivor if they are part of the mafia.
Well, he actually also wins with the serial killer, not with the mafia, flips mafia for rubik and needs to beat the real scum team. He also reacts oddily if culted, more on this later.
Bastard rating 3/10
MAFIA
SLOTHYCIRUS
Spoiler
Hello Slothycyrus You are a mafia aligned hitman.
You come here with your pals to hide after a succesful heist.
Unfortunately, someone at the last hotel caught your secret, and you had to lose them, losing your team in the process.
You see, since that time you handled that mad scientist that was treathening the boss and tasted that weird bubbly potion that the man was trying to drink before receiving a bullet in their heart your skin is invisible, good to lose chasers, but makes it a bit tricky to lay low in a crowd, anyway:
You have been separated by the other mafiates, but you got some perks : 1)Each day you may send me a list of any number of players, I will tell you how many are your allies. 2)You are invisible, which protects you from traditional killing attempts since you are tricky to find while asleep, some things(and lynches) might still get you tho. 3)Once per game, except during the first night, you may send me the name of a player, if they aren’t mafia aligned, you will be able to kill them with your trusty knife, while you have no remaining uses of this ability you gain another use each time a kill ability fails or if no player could otherwise die that night.
You win (and endgame the town) once the mafia forms a majority and no other player can change that.
1)would return: you don't recognise any of your pals unless amber was selected in the group, in which case a line saying "but you think you saw one of them meeting the boss once, probably for some shady business, he might be an ally, but not the most trustwhorty one. 2)Protects him from the mafia. 3)basically a kill every even night that turns into a kill every night if the werewolves die. flavor was getting a knife stuck in their heart.
So yeah, he had some perks but starts thinking it's the wrong kind of scum, lynching werewolves gets rid of up to 3 enemies so winning is nt that impossible if he gets the wolves dead, but there are 2 investigators capable of catching him.
Bastardness 7/10 wrong type of scum, but has an ability that can potentially reveal that to him very early, his kill ability is not guaranteed to be aviable in any specific day to him.
WEREWOLVES
RUBIK
Spoiler
Hello Rubik You are a young cop which intended to figure out what caused all the deaths reported from the old hotel in the swamp, you refused to believe the silly rumors about monsters and cults and stuff.
But then a wendigo (naga) forced you to take part to a forbidden ritual and you are now a werewolf, oops.
Once per night you may investigate a player, If they are mafia aligned you will receive a positive result, otherwise you will receive a negative result.
The werewolf chat is here :
You win (and endgame the town) once the werewolves form a majority and no other player can change that.
Well, he has no kill, or has it?
I missed I removed the part that stated he was werewolf aligned when rewriting the PM and I'm sorry for it, didn't tell him because he posted directly in thread without contcting me and I fell the wincon was enough of an hint.
Other than that a pretty standard scum role.
Bastardness:intended 6/10, actual 7/10 (sorry)
Naga
Spoiler
Hello Naga You are a wendigo and are allied with Rubik, a cop you turned into a werewolf.
You entered the hotel pretending to be his dog, kind of humiliating, but it worked.
During every odd night you can target a player with Rubik's gun, that player will die, if you die this ability will pass to them.
Unfortunately, your bloodlust keeps you from telling this to him, from discussing who should die, or from telling him that this condition exists at all. THIS IS A POST RESTRICTION.
When you die your spirit will keep haunting the chat and this restriction will be lifted.
The werewolf chat is here :https://discord.gg/qfU5Um
You win (and endgame the town) once the werewolves form a majority and no other player can change that.
Well, this is where rubik's kill hided. The kill flavor (Shot by a gun) is intentionally tied to a mafia aligned killer. I expected him to better try to keep rubik motivated that what he did, maybe by lying about his pm having other hints about him being the bad guy. Even after dead he would be able to post in the werewolf chat.
Bastardness 5/10 I think? didn't feel extremely bastard tbh.
CULT!?!?
Jaydreven
Spoiler
Hello jayDreven You are a young christian priest and are town aligned. You specialize in exorcisms, well, you are learning how to specialize in exorcisms, under the guide of your mentor Ragnarokio. You trust him absolutely, and the trust is mutual: he is town aligned, he knows you both share alignments too.
After the bridge fell, you are now working in finishing a makeshift chapel in the hotel basements, which could work as sanctuary in the night for the kind-hearted, you hope.
You win when no threat to the town remains in the game
Pretty standard mason role, it tecnically doesn't say that rag knows what alignment it is, but that seems just a wording choice, right? right?
Bastardness 7.5/10
Ragnarokio
Spoiler
Hello Rag, and welcome to the hotel.
You are an amnesiac cult leader.
You joined the cult in your youth, and travelled around the world to spread your creed, after the storm cut the hotel from the outside world, you have set the new base of the cult in the intricate maze of the hotel basement with the help of an acolyte, JayDreven.
Once per night you may target a player, if their soul isn’t claimed by some horrorific entity, or too bleak to be even considered human anymore, that player will become a cult member, get their win con replaced by the cult’s one and gain access to the cult chat.
You don’t have access to the cult chat and they won’t know that you are the cult leader.
You know that Jaydreven is already part of the cult and shares his alignment and win condition with you.
You also wrote yourself a note saying that you could get something special by recruiting the right player into the cult, but are unsure of who that player was. Regardless, you may have more hidden abilities you forgot about, maybe benign, maybe malign.
You and the cult win when no threat to the cult remains in the game.
Spoiler
Ok, this will take a while. Rag alignment is not stated in the PMs , and neither is stated in the PMs sent to the culted people, who are just told that their new wincon is "You and the cult win when no threat to the cult remains in the game."
Rag is basically a town aligned player that turns the people it targets into town aligned players unless they are part of the mafia or werewolves. Most of them receive the cult wincon and a link to the cult chat. JD receives some flavor about finding their master book around and bringing it back to them, no alignment switch. Amber received this:
Spoiler
While you are happy you are that your skin is still safe(and your compromising accounting books also are), all these murders have really lowered your income.you check the accounting book one more time, might it be worth it to lie about when the deaths happened so you can rake a couple more days of payments from the mourning familiars? Suddently you notice that somebody scribbled over your accounting book, and after you resign trying to connect the writing to a particular employee (and stop looking exclusively at the margins) you also realize that this is not your accounting book at all! You think this might be related to tevish's strange tattoos, many of the scribbled symbols looks like his, you also recognise the one on the back cover as something mown started to wear recently, maybe that's is the cult secret symbol! You decide you might as well try to pass as one of them, and leverage a member's help to hide the incrimined archives until you return from hiding should the worst come, but you know this will only work if the mafia doesn't suspect anything, you think that if they are already all dead nothing will stop you from succeeding with this new plan, but if one of them informed the higher ups about your strange behiavour and you won't be there to defend yourself when they come picking him up... ouch. You "sincerely" "joined" the cult, your wincon might have changed to your survivor wincon plus the cult one if there were no other mafia aligned players left when you got culted, otherwise its still the old one. Your wincon might now be:A)You win the game if a mafia aligned player reaches the endgame as a winner or if you are the last threat to the town still alive. OR B)You and the cult win when no threat to the cult remains in the game. Futhermore you win, but the cult doesn't win, if you are the last member of the cult alive, and no other threat to the town remains. You also picked up a snazzy secret ability, but you don't think you will learn what it does until this mess is resolved. The link to the cult chat is:
Since his new pm didn't say "no other threat to the town is alive", "but no other threat to the town remains". His hidden ability now lets him win as a survivor with werewolves(I think I did this so he would still be a threat to the town).
If slothy, naga or mown would have been targeted they would have gained access to the cult chat, but also explicitly being told that they didn't change alignment.
If Rag targeted herself, she and the cult would have learned that they were really town(said in the cult chat to let the evil members know too) and she would have learned that evil players would still get access to the cult chat if the culting failed.
Since the members of the cult were basically just christians, culted dracula didn't count for tevish "no foul monster remains in the hotel" wincon.
oh I actually won you're right that I didn't consider the semantic possibility that undead were already dead any more than I speculated on your subjective interpretations of what makes a monster (well I did a bit when aaarrrgh left), but in that case you should've gone the extra mile and dropped the "other" since vampires are also undead creatures I did consider the possibility that rag was a threat to the cult, as did I several other things I didn't verbalize, but either way I have to make a decision and assuming that the one initiating people into the cult was not a threat to it did not only feel more plausible, it was also logistically just a lot easier to work with
I mostly found weird that you considered a realistic possibility that you were remaining in the game despite it containing no way for you to win anymore tbh. You saw players being beamed up when they won, so why not make them lose if they had already all but lost.
Win conditions were decidedly one of the most bastard elements, yeah.
Now that this poll is officially over, it's time to congratulate Aaarrrgh for designing Hill, which has been decided by popular vote to be the Card of the Month for October 2013!
To some extent I didn't really think I had to kill aaarrrgh to win, because expecting me to sequence my kills in a specific order felt like a pretty tall order. That said, I didn't find it completely implausible that you could end up in a situation where your win-condition was impossible, given the plausible existence of a cult. At the point I made the remark about aaarrrgh I was mostly just playing dumb though, since by then I actually had been culted.
The most misleading part of the game from at least my pov was that it seemed like the game was less black and white in terms of factions than it was in reality. For some part during the beginning of the game I wondered if I was part of some 1v1v1 sidequest where each of us won if the other two got eliminated.
That was my secondary thinking on Rag's cult claim. My primary was just that my role was high bastardity to form an early protect on cult. But if that was the case leaning in and just getting culted would bypass issues.
So my plan worked perfectly except for slamming into the bastardry: I made a fuss, drew the hit, and used my holy water ability on myself hoping to own a killer vampire. I drew the hit (and the cult conversion!) except the ability was actually useless. It's probably best I died there, though, I likely would have done more damage than not if I'd lived. Was fun.

i guess we just lucked into lynching/killing all the actual mafia really early
