Tanner can't self vote based on the original op role list.

As for ability resolution, JD has it nailed with the wording. That is, if the drunk role explicitly states that the choice carriers over to the new drunk, then it would. Otherwise the choice stays with the original drunk despite shenanigans.

I am only stating this so confusion gets cleared up and everyone is on the same page. This, in no way, should be taken as a confirmation of anything other than what has been stated. Thank you.

As it seems to be in my interest to just let you lynch me, I will offer no help in coordinating votes.

If I receive all votes in the next 12-ish hours, then I will close the game out for you guys.

Three cheers for gy shift.

:V

* * * * * * * * * *

Day has come to an end in the grand city of Terisia. Notice was given for citizens to gather in the largest public area. Some had other concerns like running their business or no concern at all for any sort of politics that might be happening within the city. Others were heavily invested.

A large crowd had gathered by the time I got to the area. Trying to shove my way through the mass reminded me of trying to squeeze through the tight bars of a gate when I was a lad. Course, the gate didn't push back.

As I reach the center I could see the shakers and movers of this city, each of which I know by name. The mayor of Terisia City, Dusky, is there in all her regal glory. Just beside her stands a grand trickster, much to the woe of everyone, by the name of JD. Across from them, standing side by side, are two pleasant fellows I know as well. I've known Arrgh constantly through his business at my tavern, and I must say the fellow knows how to put his brews away. The other, Neo, is a kind enough gent though I have heard rumors circulating about some shady business he is involved with. They are just rumors though I hope.

"Personally I don't care what you all decide to do," Arrgh exclaims. The gathered crowd falls to hushed tones and murmurs so they can hear these important figures exchange words. "No matter what you decide to do, I am sure to benefit from it, I'll make sure of it."

The others exchange glances for a few seconds before JD takes a step forward, his eyes leveled at Arrgh. "It seems we have no choice than. Based on what we have heard, you're the one who deserves to burn, Arrgh. No other path will benefit us the most."

"My divinations affirm what Neo has stated. I'm with JD on the matter. Arrgh is the one we should burn," Dusky states in a matter that brokers no debate.

Neo coughs abrutly, drawing their stares, "I must disagree most honorable Mayor. While I understand why the focus is on Arrgh, I can't help but think that we would benefit from a different course of action. In the interest of Terisia of course." Neo bows slightly to break eye contact with the disapproving look Dusky is giving him. He then levels his stare at JD before continuing, "Personally, this grand city could do without someone as dangerous as that trickster you choose to willingly stand by."

A rather bemused huff comes from JD's direction. "You're right. Those who are skilled are particularly dangerous," JD remarks as he puts his hands on his waist.

"Well it looks like you are all decided then," Arrgh breaks in to break the building tension between Neo and JD. "Let's end this then. Personally, I have to agree with Neo here. You are too dangerous JD. No offense."

"None taken," JD says with a wave of his hand.

"That is it then. As mayor of Terisia, I sentence both JD and Arrgh to burning at the stakes, " Dusky proclaims with both sadness and relief.

The gathered crowd sets about constructing two stakes with wood piles gathered at their bases. JD and Arrgh are unceremoniously grabbed from where they stand and dragged to the stakes to be bound to them. Some more words are given by our mayor before torches are finally set to the stakes. The fires build up to a ferocious roar of crackles and intense heat. The screams from the two at the stakes overpower all within earshot.

JD, the Terisian Troublemaker, and Arrgh, the Terisian Tanner, are both burned at the stakes.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * *

Arrgh is your winner. Good game you guys.

After having watched this, I think the existence of the Tanner is too powerful in the sense that it creates a situation where town, in order to win, has to do so by random chance. That isn't exciting.

A witch-like role (that controls the abilities of a target if any) would be interesting for this format.

We keep ending up in highly unlikely gamestates. Having Tanner and no Wolf is a difficult situation, especially since there were no more town roles to claim. I just realized that when I played with Tanner in a for player game IRL we only had one Wolf so that it was possible for townies to trick Tanner into thinking they were town. If there had been one more town role, Dusky could have tricked me into participating in the town plan.

Aside from insomniac, are there other town roles that would work in this?

I'd agree that Tanner in this situation was simply skewed by lack of wolf.

A redirector would function like what you proposed, probably worded like "targets first target becomes the target of your choice". It plays into the same theme of changing the game state with hidden information without requiring the role user to have advanced knowledge of the other roles.

Charismatic could probably be plugged in for voting shenanigans without much trouble.

Night only networker would add layers and depth you probably couldn't get into in IRL.

Lovers would be hilarious, but might be better as a targeted role that links to the role and not the player (such that as matchmaker you target a (the drunk) and b (the wolf) and the lover stigma transfers to whoever becomes the drunk and wolf respectively).

But if lovers was a role, and only one was pulled, not quite as good.
I think we keep hitting odd outcomes just due to the small game size.

Here's a link to download the rules: PDF.

There are also some expansions with additional roles I'm not as familiar with. We could replace one Wolf with the Doppelganger, which targets a player, copies their role, and then gets to perform their role action. It is another layer of crazy, of course. There's also the hunter. If the hunter gets lynched, the person hunter voted also dies.

Here are the rules for the expansion: PDF.

I suggest replacing Seer with Apprentice Seer, who only gets to look at one card from the center, and replace one Wolf with the Paranormal investigator. Paranormal Investigator picks two targets, and sees the roles one at a time. If either role is a Wolf or Tanner, the PI becomes that role. If they find Wolf or Tanner on their first target, they don't get to see the second target.

@neo, that's why I said a targeting role would work better, it ensures there's a pair plus creates hidden game state information to have fun with.
