Post subject:  [D&D 3e/3.5]The Sea Dragon Sets Sail - Forgotten Realms Adventure - Now Open!!!

System: Forgotten Realms, D&D 3rd Edition
Player Count: 4 preferred, but can work with one less, or one more, if it makes sense. Since six people have voted for it, and no one has definitively said "yes" by now, it's only fair to take you as you come, starting now. First come, first served. Alternates are available, as at least one person often has to drop shortly upon start up, so be patient please.
Style of Play: PBP
Allowed Content:
Resources allowed for feats, skills, prestige classes, spells, and items
  • PHB/DMG
  • Forgotten Realms specific books:
  • Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting
  • Player's Guide to Faerun (3.5)
  • Shining South
  • Silver Marches
  • Races of Faerun
  • Faiths and Pantheons
  • Magic of Faerun
  • General Resources also allowed:
  • DM Guide
  • Masters of the Wild (Barbarians, Druids, and Rangers)
  • Defenders of the Faith (Clerics and Paladins)
  • Song and Silence (Bards and Rogues)
  • Tome and Blood (Wizards and Sorcerers)
  • Sword and Fist (Fighters and Monks)
  • Expanded Psionics Handbook (3.5)
  • Oriental Adventures
  • Dragon Lance Campaign Setting
  • Ghostwalk (unsure why you'd want to use this, but if so, we can talk about it on PM, but I do have the book)

Character Creation:
  • Backstory: If you have an existing character, send me something you already have worked out, and I can work it into my story. If you want to create new, and know Forgotten Realms, send me your idea and it will probably work. If you aren't familiar, give me a general backstory, and I can give you a tie-in to the story, but we'll discuss it so I know you'll like it enough to role-play and we can make adjustments.
  • Experience: 9th level, regardless of what I put in the older poll thread. I double-checked my notes, and this was a 9th level adventure.
  • Wealth: Must conform to DM Guide for 9th level wealth guides (only fair way to start out and keep some basic parity). If you have a character with absurd wealth from other games, please pick your way down to 9th level guidelines before you send me the character.
  • Ability Scores: 4d6, throw out single lowest. Please roll here on this site thread using the dice rolling thread. It should be like:
Arcane Archer rolled 4d6 and got a total of 13:
    2, 4, 3, 4
, repeat 5 more times, and then edit to assign STR, DEX, etc. If you flat out roll awful stats, we'll discuss it in PM, so don't freak out...just start with the basic rolls and we'll go from there. If you have existing character stats, send them to me and we'll discuss if you're in the range of the rest of the game. Make sure I know what the BASE stats are, BEFORE you add in class and feat adjustments so I don't get the wrong idea. Thanks!
  • Hitpoints/Health: Should be in the range if existing (base, before CON and stuff is applied.) New PCs, same as ability scores: if you just flat-out roll bad, bad life totals, we'll discuss in PM. Please roll your health using the dice thread, such as:
Arcane Archer rolled 9d8 and got a total of 54:
    2, 6, 4, 8, 7, 8, 5, 7, 7

Stick to base rolls, and we'll add in other factors later.
  • Alignment: Please keep to the usual good/neutral range. Again, evil is not out of the question, but you'll have a much harder time justifying why they're going to subject themselves to a voyage with generally good to neutral characters for a long voyage. I'm rational, though, and will listen to your explanation and give it due consideration. People joining just to cause anarchy will be dealt with swiftly, as that can really nuke this format. Thank you for understanding.
Other Notes: Regardless of what I just said about alignment, I'm actually not a Nazi. I want you to have a blast on this off-the-wall adventure. I will do my best to accommodate existing characters, different world generation (I can do that, trust me...), and new players to 3.0. I'm used to stepping new players through this phase, and I just want you to have fun with this. It will make it more fun for me if you really run with this. Some additional thoughts:
  • If you're new, I'll step you through the process as I am very used to doing that, so go ahead and post if you want to join
  • If you think some 3.5 rules from the listed 3.5 books (two in total), please PM me and we'll work it out. I'll share that if any other will be affected.
  • A good portion of your role-playing will be on or near a ship, so don't pick something that you fear will be constantly be hosed in these environments, but don't be afraid to pick a challenge, either, if you want. As the DM, I'm not here to buzz-kill you, but I'm not going to stop you from "jumping off the cliff", either. So keep that in mind (the sea doesn't have a safety setting, and neither do I!) Having said that, I'm not going to punk you.
  • You can use the character generation sheets linked to this site, or you can send me the raw stats and I can format a text formatted info sheet for you. Whatever you send me, it has to be readable, but we'll talk and make sure I'm reading it right, and I'll also be double-checking your math, too. 3E has a lot of math, but it gets easy after a short curve learning and I'll help you organize it for easy use.
  • Don't forget your player's mundane items, too! (like rope, grappling hooks, everburning torch, etc). It's not just about a flaming sword. I'm going to assume wizards have mundane spell components (as the Player's Handbook isn't as specific as in 2nd AD&D), and that is usually not a major cost I would count or track, BUT spells that require expensive components should include those items as part of character wealth.
  • Weight is uber-important if you fall over the rail, ... so encumbrance counts in this adventure. Be sure to factor that into your player's on-deck gear, and what gets stowed away. That is not an excuse for me to "liberate" you of items, so don't worry about that.
  • Anything else I can think of, I'll share as we go along in this prep thread.

Edit:
Thoughts I didn't think of at the start, so check back here periodically:
  • It's best if you have the resource book you generate your PC with, but if you have no resources from 3.0, send me a description of what you would want to do with that character, and I can probably find a lineup of classes/prestige classes that models that. I'll work with you on that. If I don't have the resource, I'm probably not going to permit it, but you have to admit I have a pretty huge list, so let's see how it goes...hmm?
  • Your character will earn a daily wage, according to the adventure as a merc on the ship, but that's not your only wages for the game, and I will be following the wealth guides as a starting point, but won't hesitate to go above it if I feel it justified. You can take it with you, too. If I give it to you, I don't care if your character uses it in further adventures with me. Only fair, right?
  • Arcane Archer rolled 9d8+2 and got a total of 41:
    6, 3, 4, 5, 8, 2, 3, 1, 7
wow, this doesn't let you go in and change the rolls...nice!

Oh, no! The PHB isn't included on the list of allowed books?! What shall I do?!

Also, I voted for the seafaring adventure, but as I pointed out in the poll thread, I won't be able to participate until around the 14th. If you get enough people and you wind up starting without me, I don't mind.

But holy Oriental Adventures, Bats — if you guys don't start without me, I call Shugenja.

You're in. It will take a few weeks to get this off the ground, anyway, and a Shugenja is just fine. Welcome, go ahead and start drafting the character when you are able.

Yeah, I should at least have time to develop my character then. I'll roll up a Sea Spirit Folk Shugenja (OA) of the Crane Clan, leading into the Divine Oracle prestige class (DoF).

Ability Score Rolls

Am I okay using Rokugani clans? Or is there a preference for reflavoring the Shugenja clan school into something Forgotten Realms-y?

No. If I'm willing to let you use a PC from Krynn, I'm certainly not going to shoot down you using Rokugan clan stuff. I quite like them myself...

Awesome, I'll fill in a backstory over next week that helps indicate why a Crane might be out here along the Sword Coast. Not too shabby rolls there...12, 14, 16, 11, 15, 16. Let's arrange...

Super, but a reminder for anyone joining that I prefer rolls on the site going forward, like
Arcane Archer rolled 4d6 and got a total of 12:
4, 3, 3, 2
. Looking forward to hearing the backstory...

Edit: Wait, oh snap! You did use the site rolls, you just folded them up into a hide. Just noticed that. Thanks, and sorry for not looking closer. Dang, I'm rusty...

Welcome aboard. I will assist you, no problem. Any idea what type of character?

I'm moderately interested, but my brain will have to learn to separate 3.0 and 3.5 rules.

I'm considering a Gnome or Human Druid.

Post subject:  Re: The Sea Dragon sets sail...3rd Edition Forgotten Realms PBP adventure sign up

Both are fine to use, though a Gnome druid is bound to be an interesting tale! I downloaded the rules changes from 3.0 to 3.5 from Wotc. We can figure it out.

You did use the term "moderately interested". If you join, do you anticipate going all the way? I ask to be fair to the other players. If so, welcome aboard.

I guess that was unclear. For clarity's sake, yes, I am interested, and will go as far as the campaign goes, barring all extreme circumstances.

Great, that's all I can ask for anyway. Real life is always more important. My little boy reminds me of that every day.

Do you have the 3.0 PHB? If so, draft up your character and backstory and I'll double check to make sure it works 3.0. If not, draft to 3.5, and then I'll check to see if something needs a minor tweak. I hope you have fun. Any differences, we'll work it out.

OK, that's three...who else wants to join?

I don't have the PHB, but I do have the 3.0 SRD.

SRD? I'm sorry, but ya got me there.

System Reference Document. It's basically all the stuff Wizards released with the Open Game License. So... Most of the basics in the core books, with a few trademarked monsters or references omitted. Very helpful, since it's free and legal.

I'm home and free to start mulling through books. Is there anything in particular you'd like to see? I've mostly stuck to the basic classes, but dont mind branching out, have to learn some how after all.
I'll be poking around through some books, and pondering things as well as looking to cook some dinnner. Going to read back over all of your posts from the other thread and this one, and see if anything jumps to mind.

@ Tequila: Nice stat rolls. HP right along the average. We'll see where everyone else's rolls are before I decide if we modify that. Go ahead and assign the stat rolls to your various stats and draft away. You get two points for stat increases, your choice.

Once you know your INT and mod, we can work your skills. In the meantime, you get four feats (or 5 if you are a human).

You also get two attacks per round and a base attack bonus of +6/+1. That will be modified by stat bonuses.

Base save bonuses are +6 Fort. +3 Refl. +6 Will. That will be modified by stat bonuses.

I mention all this to see if your SRD matches the PHB. If it does, keep drafting and remember to deal with height, weight, age and appearance. I'll let you work all that into your backstory, I'm not particular about it. Just remember that if you are a drop dead gorgeous person, but have a CHA of 3, there's some reason why, and I leave that to you.
