So, there are a few Pathfinder and 4E games going. We've run several mafias, and have had a handful of other systems take a run on these forums (D&D Next, 3.X, Pokemon, and Shotguns & Zombies to name a few). But, what are people looking for that they aren't seeing yet? There's countless systems out there, but it's hard to know what people want if they don't speak up. Maybe there's a specific campaign type you're looking for, like a level 20+ D&D 4E or a cyberpunk D20 Modern. Whatever you'd like to join up if it were to be run, let's hear it. There's quite a few DM/GM's now on the forums, so I'm sure we could accommodate more tastes in games.

While it is a little different from your original post I'd actually really like to *run* something - specifically one of Fantasy Flights Warhammer 40,000 rpgs (most likely Dark Heresy). I'm a big fan of the universe and have both run and played in a few games in the setting IRL which were always great fun. I'd even be willing to write up info-dumps on the setting so people can familiarize themselves with it. The problems I'm having are;

A) I'm not sure if anyone else would want to take part in that campaign.

B) The game lacks an SRD equivalent so people getting hold of the rules would be difficult. The system itself isn't all that complex (d100 roll under relevant stat/skill) but character creation and advancement is kinda in depth and doesn't really translate well over PM/Post format.

D&D 3.5e and Shadowrun 4e are the only games I know at all, so either of those would make me happy.

We could have an ongoing cards against humanity game. But that might offend the forum censors.

Pathfinder was built on the 3.X Open Game License, it also has the entire official SRD available online for free by Paizo right here. I only mention that because it's a lot easier to get people going in a system that's easy to access like that. As far as Shadowrun goes, I think I have a copy of the handbook for one of the editions somewhere....

Have you ever DM/GM-ed a game, or only play?

I made my first attempt at DMing a pre-made campaign last week, as it happens. I don't think it went too badly, but there were some fairly major pauses in play while I tried to figure out what was supposed to be going on. To be honest, I agreed to do it on the basis that one of the players was our regular DM, and he could help me out in places where I was unsure of how the rules worked. Actually, the most difficult thing I came across (other than the not particularly user-friendly way that the information seemed to be laid out in the campaign book) was deciding on task DCs. It was okay, generally. I enjoyed it, but I think I prefer playing a PC. I like not knowing what's going to happen, and forming strategies, etc. Also, I'm not an especially confident role player, so RPing all those NPCs is kinda stressful. A lot of the problems I have with DMing would, admittedly, be minimised by doing it over a forum, but I'd still prefer to play a PC, if I'm honest.

What would you say are the main differences between 3.5e and Pathfinder?

You could always do a freeform for it.

Where I work I've never had time or energy to put into making a system, but if someone wants to help me work one out I wouldn't mind trying to run one. The main problem for me running games online is I have nothing that I can make maps on.

I've actually talked about that with the staff... I want to play it, and I know that some people could be mature and accept that its a game, but I think issues would still arise.

I want to play Shadowrun, but I'd be a complete newbie to the system and have to learn it.

A lot of people love learning to DM as via Play-by-Post before going at it IRL. Forums give the DM a chance to plan out what the NPC is going to say, more time to build maps and charts, and takes away the pressure of roleplaying because text is easier than voicing in front of your peers. I'm not going to lie, PBP is really slow at times, but its a great way to learn the ropes as a DM... and a good way to learn how players react to your stuff, practice with DCs, and such.

I'm about to go to bed, but I could get you a few links to better information tomorrow if I remember. Pathfinder uses the OGL from 3.5 and then 'fixes' a lot of things. Most 3.5 content is pathfinder compatible or can be converted. Pathfinder does things like removes 'dead' levels by giving you at least some small feature at every level, tries to balance out certain things that were a bit wonky in 3.5, and also combines several skills and such to slim the game down a bit without going full rewrite like 4e did.

Making a full system is.... difficult, time consuming and requires large amounts of playtesting and tweaking. Easier, could be to take an existing system and augment it to suit your needs. Take their movement and combat rules, but gut the classes. Maybe do a five or ten level 3.X / Pathfinder or D&D 4E system, and simplify some abilities. I mean, no one will be playing the Avatar to do all four bendings, so you really only need to generate four classes for Fire, Water, Air and Earth. Do you have a system you are most familiar with to begin working on?

As far as making maps, Google drive's spreadsheets seem to work reasonably well. And whenever BH returns from the Sands, I know he's offered int he past to generate prettier maps for people.

Maybe some freeform Say Anything could work.

I have loads of systems I need to try out, but most of all, I should try to do a Weird Kid focused Monsters and other Childish Things game some point in the near future.
