Post subject: | The Simpsons "Couch Gag" Mafia (SIGN-UPS CLOSED) |
Unless anyone else in the community has a burning desire to host the next game, I need a warm-up game before I get the next Spider-Man mafia ready, so consider this thread a sign-up for a soon-to-be-determined other game by me. Sign up early and vote in the poll for flavor. Game won't start until a couple of days after HW's game ends. EDIT: Since there's been a fair bit of chatter requesting simpler games, I have added a complexity meeter to the poll on a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being the simplest game I can design (a vanilla game with few or no power roles), and 5 being the most complex (on par with A Spider-Man Mafia). I've also added three new options to the poll, to cater to all those complexities (in addition to still featuring an "other" option). In doing so, the poll was reset, so you'll need to recast your votes. You can also change your votes at any time if you change your mind, so don't worry about committing too soon to something. Don't ask me why two of the options feature a predominantly bald depicted character having a bad hair day. Just go with it. EDIT 2: Based on the poll unless we have a wild swing at the last minute, it looks like we are doing Simpson's "Couch Gag" Mafia. I'm putting the role PMs together now. If you've not yet signed up, let this be a warning that you have about 48 hours to do so before I lock the player list down. Players (8/8): JD KoD Aaarrrgh Naga Rag Dark Monster Hello World |

Is there a chance you guys would play a vanilla-ish mafia game? I would like to sign-up for a game, but i have never played a game of mafia before (unless you count playing among us). |

Among Us certainly counts, but unlike AU, pending on the setup/how you prefer to play, there is a heavy focus on discussion. But yeah, if you vote other and declare a preference for a vanilla game, I don't think anyone would mind. Don't be intimidated though by the games. Mechanics will certainly alter the game play, but it is a lot of fun. |

I am just a bit afraid to ruin the game for other players because I don't even have experience with the standard roles and mechanics. |

You'd just suggest a vanilla setup much like what you already commented on. At that point, I'm sure Zinger would be willing to build one should your suggestion make it. That said, don't be afraid to dive in. Much like in Among Us, susing out the imposters in a mafia game comes down to a variety of tactics pending on mechanics and players. Naturally, in a game of deception, tensions may run high when committed to a position, but ultimately it's just a game that we're all participating in for the fun of it. Besides, I don't think you have to worry about actually ruining a game. The bar has been set real high for actually accomplishing that, and even then it was still glorious. |

KoD already ruins the game for everyone so i don't think you need to worry about that. Seriously though, in general the people here are pretty casual and fun loving, it'd be hard to do something to interfere with their enjoyment of a game. if you'd prefer to start with a vanilla game i'm certainly fine with zinger or someone else hosting one. I know there are at least a few people here who prefer minimalistic setups. also /in |

I'll play if it starts in May. I prefer simple setups too, I feel like I can't understand what's going on otherwise. Note that I still like bastard games, just simple ones. |

I'm happy to run a simpler game if that is what people want. |

I'm happy with a simpler game. I think I've gotten too reliant on solving things mechanically anyway. I think simpler games sometimes require more skill. |

Aaarrrgh wrote: I'm happy with a simpler game. I think I've gotten too reliant on solving things mechanically anyway. I think simpler games sometimes require more skill. While I can't speak for other designers, all of the more complex games I design are intended to require skill just as much as simpler games, but I do find that people tend to forget that when they have access to powerful abilities. All too often I've seen it happen where people in a high-powered game rely on their high-powered abilities exclusively, and lose as a result. In fact, while I can't remember which game specifically this was discussed, I remember one where I had a conversation at the end with the players explaining how they relied on their abilities to do their jobs for them, and that's why they lost, to which the players mostly all argued "well, how could we have expected to need to actually do scumhunting with abilities like the ones you gave us!" which made me do the biggest facepalm of my game mod career. If I recall, KoD was the only one who agreed with my assessment that the town was phoning it in. As a designer, it's always my goal to have the abilities enhance the need for skill, rather than replace the need for skill. Course, with the way I design games, it is hard sometimes not to rely on your abilities (cuz of how awesome they are). |

Works for me, but what if we have a 7-way tie? I think you've given us too many options... |
