Iron Skies 鐵天 An Urban Fantasy Adventure Welcome to Hoi Lan Fa, a city under darkening skies. You are a member of a small company available for a variety of jobs. As 'fixers' of problems, you are bodyguards and detectives at best and sellswords and thieves at worst. Over the past couple years, you and your company has been neutral in matters of city politics but there is a storm coming on the horizon. Tensions will boil into war on the streets and canals. Allegiances will be declared; betrayal is inevitable. The fate of the world's largest port city will be decided.

That big thread is meant for me to build up a single source for everything people would ever need to know about my setting, so do not feel like you need to read through it all especially since it's like a tenth done. (And it really should be a wiki rather than a forum thread.) The linked "intro for players" post is already really long but it's also not meant to be read through; it is more an overview to help people build their characters. When I ran a game in the world irl, this one guy really wanted to create a character that made sense for the world and asked a lot of questions, so I made that document. |

Well yeah, I meant read through it because I like knowing as much as I can about a place, not because its required. |

I may be interested. I'd prefer to begin a little higher level. The only reason being that I'm in three other games (DM-ing one) that are all level 3 or lower. And 4E is so combat based, that I'd rather begin at a level where we can at lease select some useful utility skills. I find low levels really dull for 4E so far since everything is about combat and not roleplay. ~SE++ |

I am okay with starting at level 5 but not much higher because when adventurers enter the paragon tier, elements of urban politics like aristocratic houses, street gangs, etc. are no longer threats to adventurers. The quest lines and plot points I have are definitely not easily determined by combat though; I like to emphasize character choices like flapping butterfly wings. In other words, I tend to think of each tier as a television series 'season'. I do not have one predetermined railroad plot, but the idea is definitely to build into an arc that culminates into reveals of Big Bads and your decision three levels ago comes back to bite you in the ass and it all ends with your transition into paragon tier. |

As a note, if I played i'd be fine with either three or five. I've never actually been in a 4E game that went past level three though, so there's that. As stated above I'd like to give Sorcerer, Wizard, Warlock or Battlemind a try if I do end up joining. |

As a general note DS: I now have access to DDI as well, but I'm new to using it. |

It's a great resource in terms of sifting through all the books and magazine content. The only issue is that it can be overwhelming especially when you're trying to scroll through all the expertise/focus feats; also I am worried about how long it'll be supported. |

Yeah, it makes it quicker to see what exactly applies to you, but it sucks sometimes sifting through the backgrounds and such. Is there a "these are the books I'm using" option that I just havent seen yet? |

So I'm entirely new to this 'RPG by Forum Post' thing (though I have played a decent amount IRL) but I have read over your world setting and really like the feel of it. I'd be particularly interesting in playing a campaign in fourth edition that has a little more to it then 'stab all the dudes'. If you would have me I'd be more than willing to play. |

Is there a "these are the books I'm using" option that I just havent seen yet? There is usually a drop down menu that lets you sort by source so you can just close off the books you're not using.Another warning is that they just do not show you feats that you do not qualify for yet, which makes it hard to plan ahead to, for example, add 1 to your Wisdom when you hit level 8 so you can pick up the Cleric multiclass feat (req: Wisdom 13) or something. Great to hear! Play by Post is pretty quick to pick up; I am playing in my first PbP now too. The only thing is that PbP discourages off-turn actions, like immediate interrupts, just because they can slow combat down. |

I've been reading of a battlemind and would be curious to play one if you game included Psionics. If the group has a defender I'd still very much like to play a warlock or a sorcerer. But we'll see what comes of it when people profess interest. |

Psionics are definitely in, though they are a little different in their place in the universe. I will put up an actual sign-up thread or turn this into a sign-up thread later this week. |

Post subject: | Re: [D&D 4e] Iron Skies Sign-Up |
I updated this thread into a sign-up thread. Please feel free to ask me questions here or by PM. If you PM me, you may want to post here after a day if I don't response; I may not have noticed. Those in need of any books can message me. I may also set up a DDI account later for everyone to share and use. The Big 16 gets a little complicated but players newer to 4e should know that the Player Handbooks have all the content you will need. Everything else is for those who are more comfortable. Inherent bonus rules are being used, which means you automatically get automatic bonuses to your attack rolls, damage rolls, and defenses as opposed to relying on accruing magic items like a +2 longsword or +1 neck slot item to keep up with your enemies mathematically. For those already using DDI accounts, make sure to check off Inherent Bonuses on your character. Finished characters should be put into a sheet on Myth-Weavers and linked here. |

I am glancing at the Wondrous Lair Items and they are pretty great, especially Window of Escape. |

Quick Question You care much about what equipment we take? I assume since we are using Inherent Bonus magical gear will be unavailable at character creation? I assume potions and the like are still usable (always nice to have a few healing potions on hand after all). I ask simply because a Level 5 character has some 850gp to spend and I wanted an okay before I went crazy and got everything I can stick in my pack. Edit: Oh yeah. I'm going to be a Gnoll Rogue. Fill out the needed character things once I've got the sheet done and dusted. |
