Yeah...with the one I'm rebuilding, it's STR/CON, rather than STR/DEX

Sure! The mercenary group doesn't actually have a name, though it's loosely and often ironically called "The Heroes" by townspeople and those that hire them. What you know about The Tower is that there seems to be a cyclical nature to its residents--old adventurers leave, new adventurers replace them, so it's entirely like you're the "in" and the former leaders are the "old." So if there was ever a time to rebrand, it's now.

The commanding officers were thrice: Cael, a scarred, gaunt, and dour, rapier-wielding fighter; Blynn, a half-orc cleric; and Hef, a drunken master monk.

Your noble patron (aka the noble that hires you the most) is a lesser noble of Talcar, but the only halfling noble, named Garrot Milfend.

Don't forget to equip weapons so you get your +1 AC bonus!

Also, thaen, you can -2 a stat to +1 another.

I can't find how much a garrote costs or weighs, but since it's usually some sort of strong cord, should I assume both cost and weight are negligible?
Nevermind, I'm an idiot... found 'em....

Also, still need to come up with two feats....

Edit: Also, as a human I get a bonus At-Will, but I have to take certain At-Wills as an assassin, does this mean I lose out on that particular racial bonus?

I think you get a bonus slot, so I don't see how the Assassin class could take up all slots plus the bonus? I don't have the books in front of me.

Assassin's choose which group (one of two) they were part of in training, and get three At Wills based on it. Then they get 1 encounter skill, and no daily. So... basically my human ability of selecting a bonus At-Will can't apply because I don't select abilities really.

Holy hell.... apparently if I have combat advantage, I can do quite a bit of damage to a single target in one round....

Apparently I can use ungol dust (3d8 + Dex) on a poisoned dagger (1d4 + Dex), and on a hit expend sneak attack (2d6) and assassin's strike (1d10) along with attack finesse (1d8) to deal one hell of a lot of damage in a single round since they're mostly triggers...

So... in total I could theoretically do 1d4 + 2d6 + 4d8 + 1d10 + Dex + Dex in a single hit of an unknowing creature.... (with a +8 to hit). Wonder what that'd look like....

squinty_eyes rolled 1d4 and got a total of 1:
1
+
squinty_eyes rolled 2d6 and got a total of 11:
5, 6
+
squinty_eyes rolled 4d8 and got a total of 21:
7, 5, 2, 7
+
squinty_eyes rolled 1d10 and got a total of 8:
8
+ 3 + 3

Is 47 damage enough to kill things at level 1?

Hmm - 13, 13, 13, 12, 12, 10. Fear my awesome generic-ness!

@Rstnme when you say the city is xenophobic are we talking 'strongly disapproves of non-humans' or 'anything not human is basically a 2nd class citizen'?

Just dropping this here now before I forget about bits. Been chewing it through while at work and want to write it down somewhere before I get into math mode and build the character. Back story go!

---

When asked about his past Lucian's lips curl into a snarl for a moment before regaining his usual calm composure. He sits for a moment, eyes closed, before sighing and beginning to speak.

"I apologize for my hesitance. Few ask about my past and fewer still receive an answer. Still we are comrades, of a sort, and I will humour you this once - and only this once. Now where to begin? Hmm. I am a bastard - the fatherless kind - and my mother abandoned me shortly after my birth. I suppose the weight of an inhuman child simply proved too great a burden for her precious reputation. The streets of Talcar are not kind to the abandoned, especially those with horns and a tail - food was scarce and the compassion of the people even more so. Still I was not entirely without my talents; a sharp mind, silken tongue and look of the exotic can prove beneficial in the more unscrupulous districts of the city - especially if you are willing to leave your dignity by the wayside. I did what I must. I survived. But it was not until I found the 'Heroes', or more accurately they found me, that I began to live.

I remember the day well. I was a lad of thirteen and had just stolen my lunch when fortune spat in my face. Cornered by the merchant's men I was beaten until the appearance of a Half-Orc mercenary, heavily armed, gave them pause and caused them to return to their duties. "Rise" the Half-Orc had said "show me you have the strength to continue and I will give you purpose". I stood and followed the man to this very tower; they fed me, clothed me, tended my wounds, took me in when no other would. To them I wasn't a half-breed or the descendant of a tainted lineage - I was simply another recruit for their ranks. I am not so blind or foolish to assume this was a simply act of charity. Undoubtedly they had seen my potential - the power I would one day wield - and hoped to reap that power for their own benefit. Nether the less I appreciate what they did for me. They became family; the only one I had known and the only one I wished to know.

Still I did not become complacent in the relative comfort I found myself in. While my comrades wasted their wage on cheap wine and pleasures of the flesh I set about bettering myself. I found tutors in the town whose love of coin outweighed their displeasure at my company; I learned the nuances of our tongue, the fundamentals of magic theory, the history of our world and it's peoples. I greedily devoured all knowledge and skills I could and in time the filth-ridden urchin of my past became the man I wished to be - the man I was *born* to be. As for the rest I believe you already know. I make no secret of my intentions - I will become a commander here and I will make this rotted old place a name to be spoken with awe and fear the length and breadth of these lands. It is the least I can do to elevate this place after it raised me from the filth. Who knows? Show some promise and I may find a place for you when I am in charge."

The Tiefling smiles and makes moves to leave the room stopping and turning back before reaching the door. "Oh one last thing. This story? Let's make it our little secret. I would be simply heart-broken if something terrible were to happen to you - you make such a good listener..."

@Garren

Basically, anything non-human is considered a 2nd class citizen. There are exceptions, but they're rare and have had an arduous path proving themselves.

Behold your champion and superior; Lucian

...holy jeeze look at the skill modifiers on that thing! I'm basically trained in everything!

@rstnme - I probably should have asked this earlier but I assume the tower isn't just us four since the commanders went off on this last job? I kinda got the impression we we're a mercenary company with a dozen or so guys doing jobs rather than four dudes in a tower (though I could be wrong).

Bounty, I might hit you up to play a villain in future battles. It would be a limited commitment, but it would add a nefarious element to combat, with the players, versus the villain, versus the encounter I've set up. I'll ping you before it happens, but it could be neat!
Yup, I can roll a character super fast if you need a slot to round out a team role. Or the villiany goodness sound fun too if you just want to call me in for certain battles / narration. Feel free to hit me up via PM if you'd like to discuss building a PC for the baddie or bounce flavor ideas around etc.

And to all you players, have fun and good luck!!

So, since I have the bonus At-Will from being human, I was wondering if I could do something a little strange. Would you allow me to take the At-Will of the Wizard's named Prestidigitation? Assassins do eventually get some magic skills based in shadow, and Prestidigitation would basically be for the roleplay of it all, there's not much of anything it is allowed to do for combat. Actually, I don't think it can do anything at all for damage, it specifically states that the objects you can make can't hurt or really affect much.
