Post subject:  Character Survey

I very commonly have this problem where I make really complicated characters to the point where I can't play them properly becuase his personality is difficult to process for an arbitrary scenario. With that in mind, I was thinking that we could make up various different questions that you could use to ask your character, and get to know him better. Basically:

Make a question that provides some insight about a character. It can be part of a checklist for the basics, or more complex scenarios. Maybe I'll compile my favorites in the op or something, who knows, but I figures some other people could find it useful as well.
Feel free to add a "why?" at the end of eachquestion.

Inherent Traits
  • What is your character working towards, right now?
  • If I met your character, what would be my first reaction?
  • What is your character's "idle animation"?
  • What is your character most afraid of?
  • How honest is your character about himself? What parts does he hide?
  • Does your character find any values in having companions, and if so, what are they? What does he not like about it?
  • What is the best approach for dating your character?

Scenarios
  • Your see a struggling character. When are you willing to help, and when are you no longer willing to? Is the willingness affected by the struggle or the individual? If the struggling person actively asks for your help, does anything change?
  • A group of individuals you have no connection towards are in danger. Would you help if it was: A monster, a natural threat (plague, flood, etc), people you don't know, people you do know but don't actively support, people you know and actively support?
  • You find a lost expensive objects on the floor in a high-class party. What do you do with it?
  • You are informed your family will come visit next weekend. What do you do?
  • You feel love at first sight. Who did you see, and how do you approach them?
  • A man openly insults you in a crowded area as he meets you for the first time. What did he say, and how do you respond?

I'm definitely going to run a character or two of mine through this when I get some time - and I wholeheartedly recommend others do the same. Always nice to know as much as you can about your characters and his choices and goals in life.

It's nice that you enjoy the survey and whatnot.
But I was actually looking for more questions, now answers. They were more "on the top off my head" examples than anything else.

As an aside, I'm trying to be more gender neutral, but it's difficult for me to not default to the male pronoun.

Let me try a few.

Scenarios:
• You are approached by an angry intimidating looking figure and a fight looks eminent. Why is this person intimidating and what would you do about it?
• Someone offers to pick up your tab. You first instinct is? How would you respond?

Inherent Traits:
• Best weather for you is?
• Do you consider yourself at your best as the center of attention?

Bogden "Stonespine" Bearslayer

Scenarios
  • You see a struggling character. When are you willing to help, and when are you no longer willing to? Is the willingness affected by the struggle or the individual? If the struggling person actively asks for your help, does anything change? "If it's an ally, I'll try and help them out no matter what; if they're an enemy, they can struggle all they want: no begging can have me save them."
  • A group of individuals you have no connection towards are in danger. Would you help if it was: A monster, a natural threat, people you don't know, people you do know but don't actively support, people you know and actively support? "Yes, yes, and yes . . . well, except for enemies."
  • You find a lost expensive object on the floor in a high-class party. What do you do with it? "You mean like something somebody dropped while there? I'd hold it up, shout 'look at this rubbish!' and break it in two!"
  • You are informed your family will come visit next weekend. What do you do? "The Bearslayers are coming to Quodeth? Good: this city could use a good sacking to set it straight."
  • A man openly insults you in a crowded area as he meets you for the first time. What did he say, and how do you respond? "He told me to get back work 'like a good little slave', so I punched him in his face and knocked some sense into him. I'm my own master now!"

So far I see a few trends: more ideological than materialistic; very vindictive towards those who have wronged him severely; generally altruistic; relies on force. Thanks for the thought exercise Mown: in exchange, here is one more scenario:

  • Your life is flashing before your eyes moments before you meet your demise. How would you have wanted your life to end? "Eh . . . a reaver like me wasn't meant to die an old dwarf in his bed. Best for me to die doing what I do best: fighting the good fight."
