Post subject:  Ritual Casting

So I've been working on a fantasy setting for a while now and have recently decided to convert the fluff I had been writing to work with the Pathfinder system partially to give me something to do with my time but mostly so I may one-day actually get to do something with this campaign world of mine.

One of the issues I had with this conversion was magic. In the original fluff magic was to be much more ritual - it would take a long time to perform and require chanting and the creation of ritual circles and all that good stuff. The only 'quick' spells were to be scrolls and charms and the like that would provide quick charges of useful spells before being consumed.

Now the quick spells were pretty easy to convert; I effectively gave every spell an additional focus component of a scroll and ink. When a caster prepared there spells they would inscribe their spells onto these papers and cast them from them (the ink disappearing when cast but the scrolls themselves being reusable). The 'Scribe Scroll' feat itself would be used to create more powerful, longer-lasting scrolls which could be used by others or placed into storage without fading after a day or so.

Now I didn't want to get rid of the whole ritual casting thing entirely so after playing a few games of D&D Next (or whatever there calling it now) I actually decided to work on their ritual spell rules and adapt them for my own purposes. For what it's worth the general idea was to allow situationally useful spells like Alarm to be cast without forcing a caster to sacrifice a spell-slot for it while making rituals themselves too time-consuming and cumbersome to throw out fireballs mid-combat or something like that. Below (in spoilers because size) is what I'm working with thus far. What do you think up to now?

In addition ritual casting is also going to have a significant time investment as well. At the moment I'm banding around with something like 'Caster Level X Spell Level X 5 = Ritual Casting Time (in minutes)'. FOr the most part I wanted this to apply more to lower level spellcasters and spells rather than allowing higher level spellcasters to just spam level 9 spells over and over again. For example ritually casting Alarm only takes 5 minutes for a 2 hour duration where as casting Summon Monster IX at its lowest caster level would take in the vicinity of 13 hours.

I really like this concept, and wish I had some nifty way to implement it into a world I'm theorycrafting. It sorta reminds me of Full Metal Alchemist too...

I'll go more in depth when I have more time (I'm in my Skype D&D game at the moment.) but I really like it!
