http://www.slashfilm.com/wtf-mafia-movie/ You guys see this? A russian studio is creating a movie based on the mafia/werewolf game template. Im not sure whether this will be wildly entertaining or the worst thing ever. |

Why are there sharks? I'll probably watch it, if only so I can design a mafia game based on the movie based on mafia. |

Without looking at the link to see how inevitably horrible this is going to be, I can safely say... it's been done? The basis of mafia is taking a group of people and putting them in an environment where an informed minority is working to eliminate the uninformed majority and vise versa. This template applies to any media that has the "Cast is in a confined space and one of them is a killer" scenario: see And Then There Were None for a solid example of how this thing plays out. I actually don't think it HAS to get a stupid result. It's going to, especially when you bill it that the basis of your movie is a party game, but it's a relatively successful plot pattern. The only exceptions leaning hard on Mafia would create are... 1) More than one scum, which is not unheard of but muddies the plot; 2) Deaths occur each "night" rather than in the course of a shorter span of time; most of these plots will wipe the cast out over a single night. 3) "Innocents" take matters into their own hands as a group and kill people openly in the hope that the killing will stop. Most media that follows the pattern plays out more like Dethy where the "innocent" crowd gathers evidence but does not act until it's do or die, or they may misguidedly try to kill the main character once. |
