Right. Except those dead grandparents or wild dragons are encounters, so while he may not charge in as the valiant hero he should either take means to defend himself or at least consider running away.

Passive characters in a combat encounter that just do nothing are less useful than the half orc barbarian will ever been in a situation like talking to the king.

I need to hit level 7 for it, but I did intend for him to run from combat anyways. Once I hit 7, I plan on taking a feat to gain Expeditious Retreat and Feather Fall to escape combat situations if possible.

So out of interest is the character just terrified of being in a combat situation or are they against taking lives? Exactly why is it they refuse to engage in combat?

Running away doesnt even to help the team than just standing there. You change "essentially four people doing a fight designed for five" into "literally four people doing a fight designed for five."

I can get why a player would want to tinker with a non-combatant. But what I cant get is why a noncombatant would sign up for the sort of things virtually all campaigns are about. Ironically, making a noncombatant to focus on roleplay sorta puts a wrench in the roleplay of being adventurers heading off for treasure and glory.

@Garren - The reason he doesn't fight is that he is purely a Historian. His only goals in life are to spread knowledge to the masses. In the game I'm in, some ten or more years ago, a player decided to go on a crusade and destroy all the libraries in the DM's world. Because of that player, the written language was forgotten by the masses, and we're stuck with pictograph. One of the only forms of actually written word is known by Traders, and they don't typically share it. My character's goal is to learn the Trader's written language, spread it as far as he can in his lifetime, and create libraries and bring the written word back into the world.

@Bounty Hunter - My playgroup rarely does combat, we probably get in a fight every other week. I just don't get why games have to be centered around combat, or that character have to fight.

So I just acquired, and am starting to casually read through, the PDFs to "Eclipse Phase". Has anyone played it yet it looks like it could be interesting.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eclipse_Ph ... aying_game)

Quote:
Eclipse Phase is a science fiction horror[1] role-playing game with transhumanist themes.[2] Futurist Anders Sandberg noted its difference from GURPS Transhuman Space was its emphasis on posthuman (rather than transhuman) characters.[3] Originally published by Catalyst Game Labs,[4] Eclipse Phase is now published by the game's creators, Posthuman Studios and is released under a Creative Commons license.[5][6][7][8] In 2010, it won the 36th Annual Origins award for Best Roleplaying Game.[9] It also won three 2010 ENnie awards: Gold for Best Writing, Silver for Best Cover Art, and Silver for Product of the Year.[10]

Eclipse Phase is a post-apocalyptic game of conspiracy and horror.[11] The setting takes place after a World War III project to create artificial intelligence went rogue under the influence of an extraterrestrial entity known as the "Exsurgent" (best described as an organic computer virus with the capacity to infect both machines and animals with sapient qualities), resulting in the deaths of over 90% of the inhabitants of Earth.

Earth is subsequently abandoned, and existing colonies throughout the Solar System are expanded to accommodate the refugees. The setting explores a spectrum of socioeconomic systems in each of these colonies:

-A capitalist/republican system continues in the Inner System (Mars, the Moon, and Mercury), under the Planetary Consortium, a corporate body which allows the election of representatives but whose shareholders are nominally most powerful.
-An Extropian/Propertarian system is established in the Asteroid Belt.
-A military oligarchy rules the moons around Jupiter.
-An alliance of Scandinavia-style social democracy and Collectivist anarchism are dominant in the Outer System.
-From there, the setting explores various scientific advances, extrapolated far into the future. Nanotechnology, terraforming, Zero-G living, upgrading animal sapience, and reputation systems are all used as plot points and background.

With all of this, the game encourages players to confront existential threats like aliens, weapons of mass destruction, Exsurgent Virus outbreaks, and political unrest.

Looks pretty cool. There is a distinct lack of good Sci-Fi RPG's out there.

I actually just found someone at work who plays RPGs yesterday. He's played some D&D but Shadowrun is much more his style and I think he's played Eclipse Phase a time or two.

Sadly ...two players does not a D&D campaign make. We dont exactly work in the nerdiest of career fields either, but I have considered doing an LFG poster and putting it up at the library or something. The issues that our days off dont line up, and in addition to time we dont really have a lot of the things that make playing easy...like a big table, or dice, or a place that can fit more than a few people easily, or some place with AC that isnt a 24 hour quiet area.

You don't really need a big table, that's only if you need a battlemap. Not having dice is your own damn fault, I carry two d20's in my pocket wherever I go. As far as a place with AC that's big enough, yeah, I suppose where you are that's important. Though, I'm sure you'll get more used to the heat as you stay.

No...like... for instance my room is cramped if my roommate and I ever happen to be in there at the same time. I can touch my lockers on one side and bed on the other from standing in the middle. Most anywhere else we'd be vying for space against everyone else fighting over tables and the few glorious outlets... so itd some thing like trying to push a few food cout tables together or something. Not having dice isnt my fault, they're not allowed through Customs when coming into the country, it's considered something that you could be gambling with. And then yeah, the heat ... nothing says fun like D&D in 120 degrees =D

Heh, I walk around with two d20's in my pocket, and it's always kinda funny when I go for my change at a register and the cashier sees them and asks "What are those?" It's really hard not to sound like a giant nerd while explaining a d20.

one time i was getting milk from the store and i was fumbling for change and all these various types of dice kept spilling from my pockets and it was pretty embarassing the clerk asked what they were for but when i tried to answer i stuttered so i started to run away but then i slipped on the dice and fractured my leg that was embarrassing the clerk signed my cast though she was pretty cute :)
