Sad Manticores are only CR 3. They're fairly iconic bad beasties.

From what I understand and have seen so far that seems to be endemic in the MM; a huge number of creatures have been dramatically reduced in power (or at least in CR) to fit into the 1-4 CR range. I'm not opposed to the idea of fighting more iconic beasties at a lower level (gods know I got tired of fighting nothing but kobolds, goblins and undead at that level) but it seems to be leaving the higher levels a little anemic.

Yeah, looking at the CR Index someone made, it's horribly unbalanced toward low levels... Over 160 monsters in the 0-1 range, and literally three monsters that are CR 12. Nine CR 13, four CR 14, four CR 15, five CR 16, seven CR 17, one CR 18, one CR 19, three CR 20.

Well, with bounded accuracy, lower CR enemies have a wider range of use. A CR 1 monster can be used against players from level 1 to level 20, just in increasing numbers. A CR 20+ enemy has less value, in that sense.

Aye. A CR20 fight isnt going to be all C20 monsters. High level fights will likely have either one or a few big baddies and then a horde of lower CR fluffs to hack through.

Just like in 4e how you'd have a named 'boss' but it would come with two or three decent allies and a pack of minion cannon fodder.

The joke is a little too long-winded.

Are Raggamoffyns a thing in 5e?

It still means we have to manually bump up HD or class levels if we want an iconic encounter with one of those (now nerfed) iconic monsters. Sure, a gaggle of small creatures and a manticore (or any nerfed iconic beast) would be the right CR for a higher level party, but if they can drop the "boss" in 1 or 2 rounds, it's still not fun or cool.

No, raggamoffyns aren't in the MM. Weren't they just whirlwinds of dirty clothes or rusted cutlery?

They were mind controlling cuddly laundry that replicate by forcing your party wizard to destroy his magical equipment while using him as a human shield.
Although the replication part is only fluff and not supported by mechanics.

Think there were about three. Rags, clothing and armor, iirc.

So I'm bored and just got hold of my copy. Having not had the time to read it in any real capacity let's watch as I thumb blinding through it and react to what I see. This will be a valuable insight into how my mind works.

Spoiler'd for Size

To be finished soon!

I'm pretty pleased with it. The monsters are statted out in an easy to understand format and (most of) the artwork looks good. I wish they would've included more templates but meh. Also, there probably should've been some sort of mentioning of either Great Old Ones or other Lovecraftian creatures (other than kuo Toa) if for no other reason than for a Great Old One warlock to have their own familiar choices. Plus, everything is better with tentacles.

So I am like two-thirds to three-fourths of my way through the Monster Manual and I am, as I've said, in love with the art but disappointed in the monsters themselves. Lair and regional effects are cool but a lot of the monsters boil down to just melee and/or ranged attacks, with like a standard petrification ability, a standard swallowing ability, and a standard grappling ability. There aren't very many unique actions for the monsters.
