So, I've been playing Ascension on my phone since it was recommended to me by a buddy, and I'm thoroughly engrossed by the concept. I had seen in stores games that said they were Deck Building games before, but with some fairly heavy price tags attached to them, and since I already had Magic: the Gathering, I had never explored them since I had guessed they were more or less like Magic, just without the expansive options. I'm really glad I have seen them now, because I plan to buy one or two and get my friends into playing them. Have you guys played any of these Deck Building games, and can you recommend any for me to start out with? ~SE++ |

Dominion is the obvious one. If you aren't bothered by the theme, then it has the most solid mechanics, imo. Going to mention Mage Knight, mostly because I can. |

What do you mean by deck building exactly? |

I feel like I'm the only person who hated Dominion. I like Ascension a lot, but I don't really have anybody to play it with anymore, and Kibler et. al. really upset me with broken promises regarding AO. Haven't bought any expansions since Darkness Unleashed. Legendary is a solid one, the other comic book universe one has some interesting twists but most people don't like it as much. When I first heard they were re-releasing Mage Knight, 12 year old me was so psyched. But that isn't a deckbuilding game at all. |

Quote: Deck-building game From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia A deck-building game is a game that uses building a deck as the main focus of the gameplay. It is similar to collectible card games in that each player has their own deck. However, unlike CCGs, the cards are not sold in randomized packs, and the majority of the deck is built during the game, instead of before the game. Typically, the cards provide a type of game currency which allows a player to buy more cards to add to their deck. The original deck-building game was Dominion, whose popularity spurred the creation of many others: notably Thunderstone (a fantasy dungeon crawl), Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer (also fantasy), and Legendary (based on Marvel superhero comics). Other games, such as the Mage Knight board game and Copycat, use deck-building as one mechanic among many, instead of the main focus of the game. Deck-building games have inspired similar games, which focus on collecting things other than cards. (These are sometimes referred to as "pool-building games".) For instance, Puzzle Strike players collect cardboard chips. ~SE++ |

I'm not sure why the wikipedia page makes a point about acquisition methods of the cards, as if that is somehow relevant to the genre. You're not, but I feel that most people who oppose it either do so becuase of the aesthetics of it (theme and inconsistent art), or because they don't have enough experience to enjoy the more nuanced strategical choices. Unless they just don't like card games in general or something along those lines. Jman22 wrote: When I first heard they were re-releasing Mage Knight, 12 year old me was so psyched. I was talking about the recent re-release of the miniatures game. |

I'd say its relevant because it can be a breaking factor for some. I know people who wont touch magic, or any game that comes in boosters with randomised content and the 'just one more pack' notions. But if you sell them an entire game in a standard set such as munchkin or fluxx, they're fine with it. And thats my random two cents for the day. |

Yeah, sure. But there's nothing stopping game designers from making a ccg deckbuilding game. Just because all instances of deck builders to date have been boxed sets doesn't mean anything. Also, just to be pedantic, munchkin sells boosters. |

Are we talking about the varied theme sets, or do munchkin actually come in booster packs? Not that Im pushing the point, I just didnt know that and its interesting. I guess we dont have them here? Which isnt surprising, we're somewhat limited in what we do and dont get entertainment wise. |

They come in expansion packs, which is the technically correct name. Any of you ever played Smash Up? I like it. |

Aren't Munchkin "boosters" just smaller x-pacs? That being said, I would not even begin to care about Munchkin if I had any sort of collection complex (hint: I'm trying to get em all in Hearthstone). There are a LOT of things there. |
