This thread is being created to replace the old "Jack Reviews Games" thread. :( Because frankly it is a complete mess and unfortunately it is much easier to start with a clean slate then to try to salvage..... well my first very "fresh" attempt at learning how to do things. I mean.... the old thread is just a mess plain and simple.

This thread is also going to involve more in-depth content on the games discussed then just reviews.

That being said, below is a much better review of Dark Souls.

Review of Dark Souls

Dark Souls is a game where you equip weapons and armor and go around fighting enemies. There is also ranged combat (bows), sorcery, pyromancy, and miracles (1 good aoe and healing). In each area there are fog gates that lead to the boss arena, as well as checkpoints known as bonfires. If you die, you resurrect at the last bonfire you rested at, with 5 – 20 estus flasks depending on how many times you have “kindled” the bonfire (or spent a consumable to upgrade it basically). Estus flasks are healing items that respawn at bonfires and heal you for a certain amount of health. They can be upgraded by spending a difference consumable at certain npcs. Bonfires, once you also have other non-consumable items can potentially serve as a weapon upgrading center, weapon repair center, potential warpoints, and storage boxes.

In addition to this, every enemy you defeat gives you souls. Souls are currency for….. everything. From leveling up to upgrading to getting the most basic of supplies, you need souls to do it. If you ever die, you lose all of your souls and humanity (another form of rarer currency used to kindle bonfires) at a bloodstain. If you can retrieve it at the spot 10 seconds before your death…. Well good for you. If you can’t…… well then that stuff is just gone. Gone gone.

Story

So there is one major problem with the story. They don’t explain it outside of some flavor text here and there and a couple direct references FOR THE ENTIRE GAME. While it is overall very epic, and there is a very cool introduction cutscene to the game, almost none of ^^^ is explained in any sort of detail. Basically put, you do not know where to go specifically until halfway through the game, and it can and does lead to serious problems. I had issues with this as a newer player. My friends have had issues with it. And frankly…… they could at least give you some idea where to go in the early game. Once you get halfway through the game….. well it’s no longer that hard. Just because it’s now just a matter of going to the places you’ve yet to visit and you can now warp to save time. But early game…. where to go is not very well explained. This is exacerbated by the fact that it’s very easy to wander into later game areas way too early.

Speaking of, one of the best things about this game is that every area feels interconnected for most of it. Well-placed shortcuts you can unlock do such a great job that it’s never a pain to backtrack from one area to another, and it truly is fun to move around in a truly beautiful and amazing game-world. Some of the scenery is just….. it just looks good. And they’ve even added in really nice touches such as being able to see the demon ruins from the tomb of the giants. The musical accompaniment……. it works very well as well. In fact, one of my favorite areas in the game because of this is Ash Lake. It’s the lowest part of the map, and giant trees are literally supposed to be holding up the world as Lordran knows it. And…. the music is an atmospheric piece you would expect to see from something like …. I don’t know. It’s unique and fits perfectly with the area, making it a very somber place as well as one of the coolest in the game.

That being said, some of the areas are a little TOO interconnected. You can go to New Londo Ruins or the Catacombs as soon as you reach Firelink Shrine for example. While this is not a very big problem and is an extremely good part of the game, there is absolutely nothing at all to signal any kind of difficulty spike until you literally just die so badly that you are too afraid to enter that area again. That’s their entire progression system in a nutshell. Be careful which areas you enter. You may just die a horribly unfair death and THEN know that it’s too hard.
Another part of this I didn’t like….. well it’s the orange fog gates. There is an orange fog gate in the demon ruins, tomb of the giants, anor londo, and the new londo ruins. They are huge experience breaking things just there to keep you from beating end game areas too early because they couldn’t be bothered to make a better reason for not going there right away. I mean…. the entire Sen’s Fortress thing was at least epic and at least kind of worked. Ring 2 Giant bells to awaken a sleeping giant and gain access. Okay….. at least it’s an epic quest. The 4 magically unexplained fog doors just disappearing all of a sudden in a cutscene because you beat a certain boss….. not so much.

Since we are here, let’s discuss the stats system. There is a ton of depth here, and in this case that is a good thing. The problem, once again though, is that they didn’t explain any of it, leaving newbies to just flounder and eventually have to start a new game if they screw their character up too badly……. I mean yeah. A more valid complaint no matter what is that Resistance as a stat is almost useless. You see each stat has a level where you start seeing severely diminished returns. Well Resistance sees diminishing returns both after a certain level in Resistance AND AS A NATURAL PART OF LEVELING UP. This makes the stat well…. severely poorly designed AND useless. And I don’t like it when an rpg has a stat that you can safely ignore for the entire game on every character.
As for the actual gameplay…. they did a really good job with the combat. It feels authentic and kind of realistic and it’s just fun. That being said….. at some point the enemies just start to outpace you if you aren’t focusing on one stat AND/OR fully leveling up your pyromancy. And a lot of the game gets it difficulty from not so much being actually hard as being one part memorization and one part having enough stats to live through mistakes.

The true exception to this, of course, is the bosses. Which are all really freaking epic but also kind of hard after a certain point. Yes. That’s right. You heard it here first. Some of the Dark Souls bosses are just cheap and unfair. It doesn’t help either that the arguably hardest boss in the game is at the exact halfway point of the whole thing, in THE area where it’s harder than any other area to actually backtrack. Several bosses are just…. even after you memorize the bosses patterns it is very hard to stay alive against certain bosses, especially on new game plus. They all have a crapton of health and can usually one or two shot you, with the pressure never letting up. The bosses in the game are just genuinely hard and you’ll see a very large number of just cheap deaths against certain bosses. Like Ornstein and Smough.
That being said, the bosses are all extremely memorable and extremely cool. You will most likely know each one’s name very well at some point, and these are all some of the most epic fights ever to grace video games. It’s well worth the frustration some of these cause just due to the context and frankly how cool they all look and fight and….. it’s very satisfying to kill any one of these, especially on new game plus.
That being said…….. some of the mini-bosses are disproportionately difficult and/or dangerous compared to the reward for beating them. The Hydra being the prime example of this, being a mere 5k souls immediately next to an area where you can grind 7k souls every 5 to 10 or so minutes.

Another system that has problems is how weapon upgrading works. Basically….. so there are like a dozen? weapon upgrading paths. Three of them; fire, lightning, and chaos to be specific; are not very useful by the time you can actually use them for most people. By the time you can get a lightning weapon + 1, you can get a normal weapon + 10. By the time you can get a fire weapon +6, you can get a normal weapon + 15. ….. Basically, since fire, chaos, and lightning weaons don’t scale with stats, they hit a wall very early that cannot be passed by anything other than weapons that scale with damage. And….. normal weapons and even enchanted/magic weapons tend to surpass them by the time you can actually use them (due in part to nerfs for multiplayer reasons), making these weapons … well kind of cool but only really useful if you’ve been neglecting your stats. Furthermore, both fire and lighting weapons have a boss weapon equivalent that DOES scale. And… other weapon paths have some equally bad drawbacks. Such as one kind of weapon not being repairable.  Overall, it’s a cool but mostly pointless system after your stats get to like 25? to do upgrades outside of normal, magic, enchanted, and divine weapons. There are a few enemies weak to certain things… but you don’t ever have this be such a relevant thing that you have to care. Lightning weapons are only good versus…. well not a lot, and fire weapons are outdone by pyromancy.

Another thing with Dark Souls is that the common enemies themselves are fairly unique. From ghosts you can only hurt while cursed or using a cursed weapon to burrowing wurms that spit armor dissolving acid, they actually did a good job coming up with enemies that are challenging without just relying on “more damage + more stun = more difficulty”. And.... well this is a very good thing.

Overall…….. this is one of the best video games I have played in a good long while. I enjoyed it extremely the first time through, and I enjoyed it enough to go through more than once. I love most things about the game, with the exception of things I would classify as “cool but useless”. But this was not how Jack started out with this game. The barrier to entry is very high. Once you get past it… then the game is awesome. But you have to get past it. And not everyone is patient enough to do that. So be forewarned… the game is very unfair your first time through. If you aren’t using a guide, you will get lost and have some trouble knowing where to go. And you will die. A LOT. But if you persevere, the game will get easier and more importantly… fun.

Dark Souls: Artorius of the Abyss DLC

Artorius of the Abyss is accessed by killing the hydra in Darkroot Basin, killing the golden golem in the lake behind where the hydra was, and coming back to this location once you get a certain item from another golem at the beginning of the Duke's Archives.

If you have no idea what any of that meant, then you should probably stop reading here.

The dlc features 4 new bosses from 3 major new areas and a few minor ones, a few new weapons, dark sorceries/pyromancies, a pvp arena, and some all around cool content.

The three new areas are The Royal Woods, the Oolacile Township, and the Abyss.

First things first, the biggest change to the magic system is the addition of dark sorceries and pyromancies. These are powerful versions of normal sorceries and pyromancies found in dangerous places within the dlc, and in the case of sorcerires they use your attack stats to scale damage as well as your magical ones. In addition to this, one of the boss souls can be used to create a special catalyst completely superior for casting dark spells (with the downside of being inferior for normal ones). Anyways.... these 5 new spells/pyromancies are very powerful and only available in the dlc.

And I am warning you right now, dark mages in this dlc will cause some severe "fun" for you in your endeavors.

Other new items of note... well one of the bosses can get you a poisonous whip from its tail or its soul. There are some really evil dexterity weapons which also happen to have the highest dexterity requirement. There's a few other cool weapons around. And there's a new ring that doubles all damage to you (usually used for pvp cred I guess?). And there's a talisman that wards off all dark spells for like a second.

As a bonus, 2/3 of the larger new areas are extremely big and have a large amount of exploration to be done, as well as many tough situations with well placed enemies to challenge even the hardiest of players (hint, I ran. ALOT). From the gardeners to some sort of humanity demon, the enemies in the dlc are very challenging even at the basic level.

As for the bosses...... there are 4 new bosses and one blacksmith as powerful as a boss if you piss him off. I won't spoil the actual fights...... but I will just say that every one of these is hard. The first boss, as in the thing that attacks you as soon as you enter the first area, is somewhere between the final boss of the game and ornstein and smough in difficulty. And if you come back later there will be two you can "farm" if you actually believe that is a good "farming spot". After that..... well there's Artorius. He's tough. And then there's the final boss of the dlc. And then there's the optional dragon that makes the one on the bridge from earlier in the game look like a cute puppy. Sound like fun?

The scenery..... well they did a very good job with it. But the abyss goop all over the place really ruins most of the natural beaty of the place, and unlike the main game there aren't as many cool views so much as the entire dlc is just one big dark damp semi-depressing area with people constantly trying to kill your character.

So. Gameplay wise..... well the first two bosses and the natural exploration parts were challenging but fun. Kalameet.... he was an ornstein and smough level challenge AFTER I went through the event to make him easier. And the final boss..... let's just say it is the strongest, fastest, and highest health boss in the entire game that nothing else could possibly compare to and... dude is hard.

The arena...... well the arena is cool. But it is one of those things where you more wonder why it wasn't in the main game. It really does what it's supposed to do and not much else. So if you like more structured battles... this is for you. That being said, it's not available until much later in the dlc which is kind of..... it's a mark against the dlc in my opinion. I am not sure if you have to kill 2 or 3 bosses to access it, but you have to at least kill the first 2.

Overall? It's just more of the same. If you liked the main game, then this all will have made sense to you and it will definitely be worth your time for what essentially takes like 4? hours if you are extremely good but more likely will take you 20-some to beat. Assuming you don't care about the pvp or coming back here more than once (aka later playthroughs, new game plus, etc).

:( I forgot to mention this in the review so here it is. Also, this is the second to last post I plan on this game.

Multiplayer

So there are several ways to enjoy multiplayer in this video game.

Just a warning, this multiplayer scene is full of people who have gotten the best possible equipment and stats at the lowest possible levels for their play areas. Because.... well that's how the system sets things up. So if you go too high in levels (basically any good distance past level 120), you will have trouble joining games.

Oddly enough, the literal pvp arena is so deep into the game that it's only kind of popular instead of having the following you would expect. The real multiplayer scene is invasions. Where one person gets to invade the world of another as a phantom. Using a consumable item. The rules are that they must be a higher level than you, they must have committed a sin, and/or you must be in the forest covenant and defending the forest in order to invade someone. This....... well it makes it theoretically harder on the invader. But people who invade are usually pvp specialists who are much better than the average player at pvp combat. And..... they can easily destroy you. :( My experience with these phantoms is that they generally kill you sooner or later unless you do something to make them go away (like entering a boss arena). Just because I'm not speccing for pvp, I'm speccing for pve and... unfortunately that's just a little too different. So I didn't really enjoy the pvp at all. But some people live for it.

You can also summon up to two coop partners within 10% of your level below you and whatever within 10% of their level is above you (I believe that's the cutoff) to help you beat hard enemies. Unfortunately this makes invading much much less fun, because people like to camp with coop phantoms and..... not good. But this is very very good for getting help against a boss OR getting some extra exp without grinding.

Whatever kind of phantom you are though, you can't use estus flasks.

Less standard pvp options include the dragon covenant (pvp fights to earn dragon scales, a little more structured), the forest covenant (a special area where phantoms can be summoned to invade the world of people who do not belong there), and the gravelord covenant. The first two see quite a bit of use, but the last.......

So the game's covenants all give you a special ability. And while the gravelord covenant has to be one of the coolest pvp interactions around.... it's just not that popular. Due to a combination of being hard to find in a semi-end game area and there just being no real pve benefits for a very long time...... the covenant just doesn't see much use. Especially since it's semi-hard to get the consumable needed without having to grind for it.

That being said, gravelording someone is.... fun and interesting. And dangerous. To begin with, you can only gravelord people on new game plus or further. When you use the required item, a gravelord sign will appear in a couple people's world. In addition, harder black phantom versions of enemies will begin to spawn into their world. If they want revenge for this.... well then they get to invade your world using the sign. It can be quite fun. And dangerous because of people getting a sign requires them to be on their second playthrough on one character.

Finally....... you can leave messages lying around. These messages will be readable by other players in game. And.... if they so choose they can up or downvote your message. Unfortunately, these messages are EXTREMELY limited and thus effectively not of much use if any. :( This is due in part to some abuse from the previous game getting this privilege taken away.... but it still sucks. It's very rare to see a good message, it's extremely rare to see people up or downvote your messages, and frankly troll messages are all over the place while helpful ones are a needle in a haystack. :( It's a good idea implemented very very poorly.

Oh. And you can see other people's bloodstains. And watch how they died. :( To get information that may or may not help you not die.

Overall.... the multiplayer is just a mixed bag. But it's definitely unique and worth trying if you own the game. Getting the game for it though.... you would not get the game for it unless you really really liked the multiplayer in demon's souls.

This is the last direct post I plan to make describing this game, and this one is going to be dedicated to why the game is so freaking hard.

Thus I am going to describe the hardest parts of the game, so you can decide for yourself if that sounds like too much trouble.

Basically..... I'm going to describe where to get the most valuable items in the game, and why they are so hard to get. Them I'm going to ***** about every hard enemy in the game.

And warning, there are spoiler blocks for a reason.

Embers
First of all, the game has these things known as Embers. There are 4 blacksmiths (plus one dlc one that don't do much). You give these embers to various blacksmiths to give them the ability to upgrade your weapons. And these embers..... well they are in some of the most dangerous places (and not so much) in the game.

Large Ember

Very Large Ember

Divine Ember

Large Divine Ember

Dark Ember

Enchanted Ember

Large Magic Ember

Crystal Ember

Chaos Flame Ember

Large Flame Ember

Areas

Below are some of the most annoying and difficult areas in the game described.

Blighttown

The Great Hollow

Ash Lake

Anor Londo

The Crystal Caves

New Londo Ruins

The Abyss

The Demon Ruins

Painted World of Ariamis

The Catacombs[/spoiler

The Tomb of the Giants

Unfortunately.... none of the dlc areas make it on here.

Due to length concerns (nine pages in microsoft word at 1.5 spacing), I am actually going to have to split this in two.

Some bosses will get left out of this.....

This will describe the hardest bosses in the game. Not just mediumly difficult but HARDEST.

First things first...... notice that out of 6 bosses here, 3 are the 4 from the dlc. :( That says something. And kalameet is only not on there because he's easier than the other 3 enough to not merit it at that point in the game.

Ornstein and Smough

The Four Kings

The Bed of Chaos

Sanctuary Guardian

Knight Artorius

Manus, Father of the Abyss

And while we are here,

Hardest Common Enemies

Let's see....

Demon's Souls

I am going to be writing about a few games here now for a couple of days.

Unfortunately or fortunately depending on your viewpoint..... one of them is going to be the spiritual predecessor to Dark Souls.

So, here are my first impressions of Demon's Souls. For those of you who have never played Dark Souls or Demon's Souls, let me just say that the game is hard. For those of you who have played Dark Souls but not Demon's Souls, let me just say that the game is HARDER.

You see, Dark Souls did not just reimagine Demon's Souls with a few little tweaks to the mechanics and try to go with what their popular game had been. No. Dark Souls changed a very large amount of things that make it a better game in the long run.

Spoiler

So. What were my first impressions? Well... the game is just hard. It's really hard. There are tons of little things that are just unfair. And... I still found a large number of parts fun. But it's definitely...... more stressful than Dark Souls. It's much much much longer between shortcuts and such and the levels just seem longer because of it. One mistake loses you a lot more progress. And.... the way the system is set up you can run out of items and not have enough to get a certain level done. Once you unlock 4-2 and can farm this goes away a little..... but it's still hard. And they obviously learned from this game to put some of the more... interesting enemies in later levels where they would be more fair.

Overall...... I liked it but was disappointed with the bosses so far. There seems to be one kind of boss in Demon's Souls. Either you cheese it... or the boss has an overwhelming advantage that you will have a severe problem trying to overcome. I have tried to do 5 of the 6 bosses I faced (screw the Leechmonger and Blighttown clone) but melee character seem to be at a severe severe disadvantage compared to ranged characters in all of them. And that's.... not as fun. Every boss is memorable and cool and you will remember each one of those fights. But they are all also just too hard to do compared to just spamming fireballs or arrows at range. :( The rest of the game... kind of forces you to learn how to use a bow or magic as well. Including all of Stonefang Tunnel. I made it to the Armored Spider before ever using a bow or magic..... but I had to do 8-10 hits to every single enemy in the level to get there. And when I got there... I literally just realized the melee route wasn't viable. That shouldn't be the case. I might just be biased by the better game that came later, and since this is older some of its problems which they did learn from can be excused, but ..... the game is just unfair compared to hard. A boss that takes lots of skill and perfect dodges to fight against is hard. Ornstein and Smough are hard. But this game feels a lot more like the Bed of Chaos, where several things will just give you a cheap death.

Do you write these just for here or does it have another audience?

Also, a word of advice: brevity is a virtue

People read them.

They're interesting, and even if he isnt always 100% on target with things he says, he puts the effort in.

Just for here.

:( My philosophy is that people would find 8 pages more interesting in the long run then a single paragraph. Assuming they were interested in the subject. It's not an either or thing but..... once you start going longer it becomes harder to cut things, and the alternative is a second post.

Will add a spoiler block though to make it more condensed.

Well. I did not expect to do this again so soon. But since we last played, I have finished off 6 more levels. And actually ventured into the last 3 available right now enough to know that I would rather right this post and take a break.

So, discussed below will be worlds 3-1, 1-2, 2-2, 2-3, 4-2, 4-3. I have access to 1-3, 3-2, and 5-2 as well, but they are the 3 unpleasant ones I have left.

First things first, I have not ventured into 5-2 because of the freaking swamp and that's it. I have not stalked up on enough anti-poison and anti-plague items to make a couple of attempts, and this isn't like Dark Souls. You don't get a very large amount of attempts where you can use Estus Flasks to wait through the poison at least (a favorite tactic in Blighttown for unlucky people before Quelaag). The level is supposed to be relatively long, and you have a limited amount of healing items, so I have to be very prepared for at least a couple attempts to get to the boss, a couple of attempts at what I know will be a hard boss, and then maybe a 5th or 6th attempt to kill the actual boss. Assuming all goes well. Getting a hold of these items is complex enough that I keep putting this one off till last.

3-1: Tower of Latria

1-2:Dragon Bridge

BTW, these are actually being described in the order that I did them. So.... fun.

4-2: The descent

4-3: The MountainTop

Okay. My options were 2-2 or 5-2 or 1-3. I didn't want to deal with multiple red-eye knights just yet or the swamp so...

5-2 Descent Into the Mines

5-3: The Dragon God's Hall

And that is how I have 3 areas left and had enough material to write this post.

The 3 areas I have left are :

The Poison Swamp. With the blighted boss that .... that's going to be an unpleasant boss fight. Cool area I guess but quite hard as well. Since they are kind of a package I would also have to worry about the freaking plague swamp of 5-3 too....

The area with Maneater as a boss. He's... well they are a harder predecessor to the Gargoyles of Dark Souls fame. Also..... the area has tons of gargoyles like the ones that kidnapped you because that makes sense in continuity. :( That is also going to be an unpleasant boss fight. The whole thing is going to be really freaking cool but...

Oh and the area locked behind an archdemon kill because it's genuinely that hard. :)

So, just a small disclaimer. I have not done 5-3, 1-4, or 3-3 yet. Nor have I beaten the bosses in the levels prior to them. But.... i have gotten to the bosses. :( The penetrator, maneaters, and ..... well whatever the **** the fly monster is called all are capable of kicking my ***. :(

That being said, I know enough about every level remaining to know that it is highly unlikely my opinion of the game would change. Especially since I've watched videos of people beating them and the bosses and.... it's what I expected.

So. Here is a list of pros and cons for the game overall. :(

Pros
- The game is very large and has a decent size campaign.
- The worlds and enemies are really cool looking. I mean... these are 5 of the best designed worlds I have played in a video game series. Ever. And... they are just really well done. From the valley of defilement to the mines of stonefang, every world feels like demon's invaded and are living there.
- The story is really good.
- Some of the boss fights are just.. epic.
- The mechanics work like expected and are actually really solid.
- The multiplayer is still really well designed.
- I got to swing a sword that throws thunder at enemies I don't like.

Cons
- Bow and Mage builds just seem disproportionately easier to use for 80% of the bosses. I feel forced to use these and dedicate a lot of points and resources to them even though I like melee focused characters better.
- The game is just unfair. It's not difficult like Dark Souls. It's harder. Just because it is very unfair. There are things you can do after several tries. And then there is just so difficult as to be oppressive. Most of these issues span from the next complaint.
- The magic meter and health items are too easy to run out of items for after a few attempts. This just..... it makes the game a lot harder than it needs to be and it takes a lot of the fun of exploration completely out of the game once you get to later levels. You don't go exploring just because you don't have the items to do so if you mess up. This just..... it's not a fun system.
- Recommending a message restores that person's health. Sounds good right? Let me be blunt. As expanded on elsewhere..... this completely ruined the entire message system so badly that it has ruined the message system of Dark Souls somewhat as well and forced them to remove this feature from Dark Souls. You know why? Because 70% of messages are just people asking for you to recommend them. Another 25% are troll messages. Making the 5% of useful messages not get read often enough to get rewards...... Seriously. People upvote the spam messages but don't really ever upvote the actually good ones.
- It is a very very long, very time consuming, very dangerous, and very ITEM CONSUMING trek to several bosses.
- Expanding upon earlier issues, the bosses, while really cool, are just not that doable without cheesing them. I mean.... you can do it. But it's so hard that it's not worth even trying for a lot of them unless you are trying to challenge yourself and make the game a lot harder on purpose. Because of the previous bullet point, the game just makes it very unpalatable to actually lose to a boss when you know a really cheap, really easy way to beat it.
- There are bosses where summoning help, due to the "intelligence" of the average player on the internet, just makes the boss unnecessarily harder. Which throws an unfortunate wrench into parts of the co-op system.

Overall, I liked it, but I also have to take a break before going through the grind of trying to finish it.

This is going to be my last post on Demon's Souls for a while just because I really need a break before I will play it some more.

So. I tried to explore 1-3. Realized it was just more of the same. Realized I needed to do something more complicated involving backtracking before I would be able to beat the boss. :( Moved on.

3-2 is where the gargoyles take you after they kidnap you from the church where you fight Fool's Idol. You alternate between climbing the ramparts and fighting said gargoyles, while doing your best to cut the chains holding up some... massive living beating thing in the center of this area.... and the swamp below. So long as you don't stare too hard at the one tower, the rest of the upper area is very cool and very scenic and the gargoyles are much more ... they are actually fun to fight.

The swamp below..... first of all I would have loved for this to have been 5-2. Anyone want to start a petition? Anyways..... the swamp below has the tentacles of the beast above going around. I've never seen them attack me.... but I've never actually tried to piss one off either. Anyways, these bug-like things with 3 human heads ala wall of souls in hades looking kind of heads and a centipedes body keep aggro killing me out of nowhere. ... Do quite the bit of damage if they can break your guard 2 on 1. Well..... you fight a bunch of them while trying to get back to the areas above to do more damage to the things holding the thing up. And..... well eventually you accomplish your mission and then go to fight the bosses of the area. Known as the Maneater. ... There are actually 2. The second appears after 80% damage to the first or 100 seconds. This makes the fight a lot harder than it needed to be, as one is a challenge in itself. Not beaten them yet.

And 5-2....... it's oppressive as ****. I haven't even seen the boss yet. I know what the boss is and have no idea how I am going to beat it reliably once I get there because I really don't want to have to make this trek again once I make it once, but that's a worry for when I actually get there. I mean..... I am literally going to have to go out and get a literal map on the internet and use it in extreme detail and reliance to navigate the area well enough without dying. It's that bad between islands of land enemies that swarm you, things running around in the swamp, the actual swamp itself poisoning you very quickly, and the fact that Jack has no idea where the **** to go. You see..... it's one big swamp with barricades everywhere. Everything looks the same. And you can't see into the distance. The fog is that thick. You can see lights in some directions in the distance but navigating by that is all but useless. It's ...... it's not a nice area to be in. The first level was still kind of fun to play. It was at least entertaining and doable without having to google literal help on how to get through the area WHILE playing. This.... this is sucking the fun out of the game in this one level. :( And the good news is that no matter how much I like this one, I will like area 5-3 even more /sarcasm. Because 5-3 replaces the poison swamp with a plague (basically toxic + healing items less effective) swamp in one area. :( ...... This is why I am taking said break. Jack needs to just walk away. Walk away. RUN. RUN NOW. IT HEARD US.

League of Legends

League of Legends, known also as LOL, is a game where 1-5 champions on each team face off against each other in combat. The point of the main game, which is the mode this post will discuss, is to destroy the enemy's Nexus. There is a side mode known as Dominion where it's to control enough control points to reach the point goal before your opponent's, but that will be discussed another day. Each team also has towers that do a ton of damage to any enemy that goes near them, prioritizing anything that damages a friendly champion while in range of the tower. Minions are spawned at each Nexus to go "down the lanes", or the long paths that contain the towers, and the minions are usually used as cover for champions to attack towers.

While other maps see some play, Summoner's Rift is the main map used for LOL games. Summoner's Rift is a 5v5 map with 3 "lanes" and a jungle between the middle lane and the other two. The lanes are known as "top", "middle", and "bottom".

Now here's the unofficial strategy behind most high level games. You want to have 1 person up top, 1 person in the middle, 1 person roaming the jungles helping both of those lanes when needed, and 2 people in the bottom lane. Each lane has 3 towers per team, and one team has their nexus in the top right of the map while the other is in the bottom left. The top and bottom lanes go around the edges of the map, while the middle lane cuts a diagonal through the map.

So why those champion configurations? Well middle is the shortest path, and exactly 1 person stationed there will level up faster than anywhere else. Thus teams usually park a mage defending the middle lane's towers, because mages tend to benefit most from leveling up quickly early on. The jungle is necessary for buffs and for letting one person roam the map to help out where needed. This person levels up frequently by killing neutral minions for buffs within the jungle, while they "gank" or attack unsuspecting champions in vulnerable positions in various lanes.

So that's two people taken. Now the question is, why 2 bottom and 1 top? Well simply put..... there are two epic neutral enemies known as the dragon and the baron. Killing the dragon provides a small advantage to your entire team in battle for a short period of time. Killing the baron....... provides a much much bigger buff for a short period of time. The dragon spawns on the bottom lane IMMEDIATELY and can be killed by characters at level 6 out of 18. The baron spawns 15 minutes in and requires multiple end game level champions to kill it. This means that the meta is to park a support and damage per second (or "adc") character in the bottom lane to stop people killing the dragon early and park an end game tank to farm by themself up in the top lane.

So once you've picked one of 100's of champions to go into battle with, what else do you need to know?

Well first things first, you start at level 1 and level up until 30 (at about 300 games played at an average of 40 minutes per game), gaining in game currency to buy runes and more champions along the way. Each new level gives you 1 mastery point and 1 more rune slot to use. You can use tier 2 runes at level 10 and tier 3 runes at level 20. And runes and masteries when built well give you a small advantage over less prepared opponents.

Once you are in game your champ starts at level 1. By being near enemy minions dying, you gain exp for your champ for that game only that levels them up a little after a while. Levels go up to 18, and each level up gives a small stat boost and a skill point. You can allocate skill points to the Q,W,E, and R skills. The R skill is known as the "ultimate" and can only be upgraded at levels 6, 11, and 16 or later (people always do it immediately though). Over time and for "last hitting" (dealing the fatal blow) enemy minions, you gain small amounts of gold that you can spend on stat boosting and consumable items. These usually help you in battle and can even buff your teammates.

So what does this all mean? Well..... it means there is a ton of strategy involved.

So. Jack really really likes the game. That being said, I have one major gripe. Even though I have fun even when I lose, one bad player WILL make the difference more often than not. If someone rage quits, the team trying to play 4 v 5 is at a severe disadvantage for the rest of the game. And people frequently (every few games at least) rage quit at low levels as soon as their team is not destroying the enemy team or for a whole host of stupid reasons. A really really bad player can also frequently lose games by "feeding" (or accelerating the level up and gold process) enemy champions by well..... dying a lot. Which again is a severe problem at lower levels, where people play way too aggressively because they haven't learned that walking up to a tower without minions is very bad for your team's chances the fourth or fifth time you do it. :( That being said, abnormally good people at lower levels can also sway the game in the other direction. Especially if the game goes on for a long time where levels matter less. For example, Jack frequently ends up winning 3 v 1 team battles where he is the 1 towards the end of the game due to being extremely good with tanks. I've seen other people use champions like Yi to also severely swing games one way or the other. And...... well it truly is a game of skill. :( I have not played with people past level 24 yet, so I have not seen high level battles yet. Once you reach level 30, you can then participate in ranked matches. They make you wait.... so that you most likely have 100+ hours under your belt before you join ranked.

The other complaint I have about the game is a complaint I have about every multiplayer video game. The community takes it way too seriously and chat can thus be a very unpleasant feature to have in the game.

Overall....... I would recommend this. Especially since it's free.

So I got Dark Souls 2 in a usable form. Which means I have to beat Demon's Souls first. Or at least 5 of the last 7 areas. Which means I am extremely pissed at certain parts of Demon's Souls. Which means we have come to this.

Top 10 Improvements in Dark Souls over Demon's Souls

Number 10: Replaced the Nexus with Bonfires

The Nexus is an interesting zone. It's cool looking. But it serves absolutely no purpose that the bonfires in Dark Souls do not (other than a crappy store you stop using after a while) and it's just a time waster. Furthermore, you effectively respawn at the Nexus every time you die. While in Dark Souls you spawn at the last bonfire you visited. THAT'S AN IMPORTANT DIFFERENCE. So if I die at the bonfire halfway to the boss, I get to respawn at the bonfire halfway to the boss instead of the beginning of the level.

The Nexus also meant that areas could not be completely interlinked in Boletaria the way they are in Lordran, and this too was a major point in Lordran's favor.

Number 9: Replaced HP and MP items with limited uses per spell and estus flasks.

A simple change, but this eliminates a lot of the frustration that running out of these items entailed. Magic also became a useful tool for the entire level instead of ...... well something you had to save for the boss or you would run out when you truly needed it.

Number 8: Most non-boss enemies had to choose between extreme speed, extreme health, or extreme attack (for the area they were in).

In Dark Souls, you either have a very large, very slow, very tanky enemy that does a ton of damage. Or you something like the capra demon where it is fast but you have to make a few more mistakes before it can kill you. The only thing that kind of breaks these rules is the skeleton dog, and you can 2 shot it by the time you get to see one.

In Demon's Souls, there are several enemies like the Giant Depraved One that are fast, extremely powerful, can break your guard very quickly, and have a ton of health. And these show up in level 1 of the 4th and 5th worlds. :( Otherwise known as relatively early in the game. And ..... they are just giant run-ending road blocks with no good way to deal with them other than trying to kite and not take that one or two lethal smacks while whittling down whatever monstrosity you are dealing with.

Number 7: Melee builds are completely viable compared to ranged builds against most bosses in Dark Souls.

:( I complain about this a lot, but ranged cheesing seems to be by far the best way to deal with a whole heck of a lot of bosses in Demon's Souls. With a massive total of one so far being comparable with melee.

Number 6: Darks Souls has more focused stats. ..... This one's hard to explain so just trust me. The stats system in Dark Souls makes a ton more sense. The same with the upgrade system and the spell system themselves. They still don't explain it that much... but it's a ton simpler to figure out and make intelligent decisions whereas in Demon's Souls you are left guessing and unsatisfied with whatever choice you make (at least as a beginner).

Number 5 Dark Souls has color palettes other than Doom and Gloom and Gray.

..... That's it. A lot more colorful environments show up during Dark Souls, and large parts of the game actually take place during the day. With the exception of Stonefang Tunnel's fiery parts and the occassional, the vast majority of Demon's Souls takes place in soul crushing damp dank GRAY areas designed to be depressing and oppressive. While it has the intended effect... it just takes some of the fun out of some areas.

Number 4 Dark Souls got rid of ranged flying non-boss enemies for the most part.

You have.... the mosquitoe? And that's about it. And that can eat a sword to the face. They don't have ranged enemies flying around outside of melee reach pinging you for tons of damage in Dark Souls.

Number 3 Dark Souls gives you better loot.

Self - Explanatory ... ish. The weapons and loot in Dark Souls feel worth using BEFORE you get the late game boss weapon thing. ... That's it. The weapons are more fun to use, they are easier to upgrade, and I don't have to forego a massive amount of spells to get cool weapons.

Speaking of...

Number 2 End Game Spells are not solely tied to Boss Souls for the most part.

I think Dark Souls has... Pursuers for Manus's soul and that is it? Every other use for a boss soul is a weapon, and none of the weapons are so necessary as to be staples.

In Demon's Souls....... you forego most of the important items in the game just because every single good item requires like 50-100k souls OR grinding, a bit of luck, and a boss soul to have. Both weapon-wise and spell-wise. It's just..... it's not as fun as you would think. At all.

Number 1

Finally.... Dark Souls does not lock parts of the game away without warning end-game.

I have to make a serious choice when I get towards the end of Demon's Souls. If I go ahead and kill the 3rd to last boss, I don't get to level up any more. And.... that's an issue. Along with a couple of other things...... Dark Souls just has a last area you can (or not) choose to go to and doesn't force the decision upon you without warning.
