~Legends of the Rangridsaga~

When it came to white legends, I went a bit nuts for the Aralheim set, mostly thanks to the Rangridsaga stories. Here, for instance, is their main character.

Rangrid, Hunter of Horrors
:1::w::w:
Legendary Creature – Angel Soldier {R}
First Strike
:1::r:: Rangrid, Hunter of Horrors fights target creature you don’t control. Then put a +1/+1 counter on Rangrid.
“I am not trapped on this world with the demons and creeping things, they are trapped here with me.”
3/3

For those who haven't read the Rangridsaga... Um, spoilers? Yeah, she's not supposed to have flying. Strange, isn't it? But she was hardly the only legend to be introduced. There's also the supporting cast, mostly of Carrying the Torch

Larus, Prince of Vindstadr
:1::w:
Legendary Creature – Human Soldier {R}
Vigilance
As long as you control an Angel, Larus, Prince of Vindstadr gets +2/+2
Valor – As long as you have less life than an opponent, Larus, Prince of Vindstadr has Lifelink.
2/2

A young nobleman fortunate enough to have an angel for a schoolmaster, Larus is a competent combatant, it seems. Though he isn't up-sized like real warrior legends often are to 4/4 and bigger (at least not without help), he can hold his own here and there. And as far as that teacher goes...

Skogul, Angelic Tutor
:2::w::w:
Legendary Creature – Angel Wizard {R}
Flying, Skald 2
:1::u:: Draw a card. Activate this ability only when Skogul, Angelic Tutor is untapped and only when you could cast a sorcery.
“Humans are fascinating creatures. They can learn all we have to teach in less than a century, but then the next generation must start all over again.”
3/3

Skogul is, from a card PoV, a mirror to Rangrid, being a 3/3 angel with an off-color activated ability in the other color that the Builders of Aralheim inhabit. Skogul played a minor role, but I felt she could add some flavor, much like...

Sigdrifa, First of the Sisterhood
:4::w::w:
Legendary Creature – Angel {MR}
Flying, Vigilance
Other Angel creatures you control get +2/+2
Valor – As long as you have less life than an opponent, Angels are indestructible.
5/5

Now, this character didn't even directly appear, she's just called out sort of as the Valkyrie other Valkyries look up to. As of the set, it's being clarified that Sigdrifa is, at the very least, the informal leader of the Valkyries, and based on that title might have an important status among them, which I chose to leave ambiguous.

It's worth noting that angels are normed around 4/4. Sigdrifa, as exceptionally old and skilled, is a 5/5. Rani and Skogul are down at 3/3, one having lost her wings and the other being in a noncombat profession. Most of the nonlegendary Valkyries in the set, and the remaining Valkyrie legend (yes, there is yet another, but she wasn't mentioned in the Rangridsaga so I'll get to her later) are 4/4, like the old days.

Any modern M:tG set has elements from outside the world -- Planeswalkers, and the things the Planeswalkers bring with them. Aralheim is no exception.

Illarion, Planar Tourist
:1::u::r:
Planeswalker – Illarion {MR}
[+3]: Exile target creature you control. Return it to the battlefield under your control at the beginning of the next end step.
[-5]: Choose a card you own from outside the game, reveal it, and put it into your hand.
[-12]: Name a card, then reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal the named card. Exile all cards revealed this way. Until the end step of your next turn, you may play those cards.
[4]

Illarion is a natural inclusion, seeing as Aralheim is his home plane.

Mox Ring
:0:
Legendary Artifact {MR}
As an additional cost to cast Mox Ring, sacrifice an artifact.
:t:: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool

Similarly, he's carting this thing around right now.

Lourima the Vagrant
:1::b::b:
Planeswalker – Lourima {MR}
[+2]: Sacrifice a Permanent
[-3]: Destroy target creature
[-9]: You get an emblem with “Creatures you control have Lurker”
[3]

Lourima visited Aralheim in "Kinship", and was a good fit for "set mechanic on a PW"

Mari Gwynn
:1::w::w:
Planeswalker – Mari {MR}
[+1]: Tap up to one target creature
[-2]: Prevent all damage that would be dealt to you and permanents you control until your next turn.
[-6]: You get an emblem with “Whenever a source you control deals damage, you gain that much life”
[-6]: Mari Gwynn deals damage to each creature you don’t control equal to that creature’s power.
[3]

What -- Mari?! I wonder how she ends up here...
