So I finally compiled all my notes into a neat document like I said I would months ago. Some of it is probably still a little messy and unfinished but I really wanted to get some more opinions on it, especially from you guys since you have more experience in worldbuilding than the people I have shown so far. And of course feel free to use any of the ideas here.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1JtD ... sp=sharing

Shengxiao is a plane heavily inspired by classic Chinese myth and stories. It stems from the idea of making a set around the 12 zodiac signs, and eventually morphed to include kung fu styles and other mythical animals in Chinese culture. Although there are a few misc animals, must of the plane is inhabited by anthropomorphic animal tribes. Each set in the block follows the journey of Xiao Lin, an extremely rare owl, born from a raven and a crane, as she tries to save the world and correct a horrible mistake.

Block Story Summary

Tribe Bios

Various Other Notes

Mechanics (for those designery Vorthos)

I do want to read this, Lily, but is there any way you could post it here? I know this is a personal thing, but I really don't like following posted links in threads, and I'm not personally fond of google docs.

I'll get to it eventually.

Lily can we get an elevator pitch for this? Right now it's hard to see what the major idea here is beyond, I guess, Chinese Zodiac World? Yeah, I feel like I'm being sort of thrown into things and I don't have a good sense of what the context for anything is.

Yeah it's zodiac world. I helped Lily with a few of the details.

Woooooops, so sorry about that. Yeah it was originally a Chinese zodiac kung th panda world with 12 humanoid animal tribes, its now more of a Chinese storybook world, but everyone is still humanoid animals. I'll add that to the top of the thingy when I can. And raven I'll try and copy stuff over here today too. Should I bother copying over mechanical stuff or just flavor things? I was just keeping everything in the same doc for myself and for when I post it in ymtc someday.

And while I'm here I guess I should ask if there's a particular format I should post things in or just keep it mostly neat? I'd like to post some of my other worlds later :o

Marvelous, but it needs some refinement in the presentation.

What you post is completely up to you. I'm predominately interested in the flavor, personally.

Thanks, and I completely agree. Is there anything you can suggest besides just finishing things? My weakest point is probably desiging characters. I prefer big picture work.

I finally copied over what I had minus a few things. It's way smaller than it looks in docs :(

Just thought that this is a pretty interesting story, it does resemble Kamigawa in a sense but it certainly stands out as its own.

Here's my two cents though:

1) A chinese mythology you might want to read up on and include as a potential character in the story - Sun Wukong aka Monkey God/King (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_Wukong). He was said to be born from a stone who couldn't find his place in the world, wreaked havoc across all realms and eventually was subdued and became a better person after several trials in his journey to the west.

I just felt that a character representative of Sun Wukong could be in your story where he serves as a companion to the main Lin. Given that Sun Wukong is similar to her in some ways (being headstrong, stubborn and different from others), the main lead could relate to him and rely on him for support and advice. Not to mention Sun Wukong is already well-versed in martial arts and the sorts. Having Sun Wukong also opens up other several potential characters in his story - The bull demon king, Bai Gu Jing (Skeleton Spirit Demon), (Zhi Zhu Jing) Spider Spirit Demon, Erlang Shen and Nezha (deities) etc

If otherwise, you may want to consider having Sun Wukong as a template for Lin?

2) You may want to look into Jin Yong's novels for inspiration as well, where there are often mentions of legendary characters and weapons. I particularly like the mention of a legendary martial artist Du Gu Qiu Bai (独孤求败 which the name implies solitude and invincibility) who was the most skillful martial artist who could not be defeated by anyone in his time and hence his name.

In one of his novels Yi Tian Tu Long Ji (倚天屠龙记, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Heaven ... agon_Saber), two weapons namely the Heavenly Sword and Dragon Sabre were the focus of the story. Both of these weapons withheld a secret, the contents of a secret manual to warfare and they can only be obtained by clashing onto one another. Of course you could probably write something similar, only with the difference that the weapon Lin is looking for holds the secret to upholding the balance of Shengxiao - A planeswalker spark or something.

3) If you do go that route as suggested in point number 2, it does somewhat reminds me of Mirrodin's fifth dawn though, where the green sun is actually the planeswalker spark in glissa (maybe I recalled wrongly, but it probably is something like this). You could write the ending where Lin eventually got the spark but left the world to unknown fate as she planeswalks away or something (unintentionally). That could end as a cliffhanger and a potential revisit in the future.

Regardless that's probably a lot of reading into chinese novels and mythologies you have there. :D

Sun was actually part of the inspiration for Lin's personality and I had previously messed around with the idea of a monkey planeswalker based on sun. Oh and I definitely want some legendary weapons. Thanks for reminding me. My real goal is to get other people excited about this so I can get them to write short stories for me that I can post with cards. My dream would be to have a "Book of shengxiao." With random stories and flavor texts and stories and etc as like the ultimate history, and then make an actual card for it in the final set. So like it would actually exist in our world and in their's and in card form.

Interesting plane. I kinda like it. I was definitely thinking about Sun Wukong as I was reading about Xiao Lin. The whole 'going to heavy and stealing a heavenly weapon' thing definitely spoke to that.

This is definitely a 'broad strokes' type of world build, but I do like what's here. Xiao Lin's story has a very mythological feel to it. I'm particularly fond of your rough description of Set 3... :)

I don't really have a great deal to say about this. I definitely think it needs more development to be fully fleshed out, but I like the zodiac races idea. The world itself reminds me a little bit of Quanyan, a plane I made for my story "Eternal Eclipse", which was highly influenced by Chinese culture. But that plane didn't have much development, and wasn't based much on mythology. So it's good to see this particular take on a Chinese-themed world.

Thanks for posting! This was interesting, and I'll be watching to see where this goes!

Thanks for the positive feedback. I am not sure if I will every actually finish a planeswalker's guide or something since I mostly just do what I need to make cards, but it's definitely one of my favorite settings so who knows!

Unrelatedly - I was not expecting to see 倚天屠龙记 mentioned on these forums.
Personally, I still like 射雕英雄传 from the series the best.
